All I want is this: an outback with a Lexus/Volvo interior, Volvo stereo, non-CVT tranny, a little more power, Toyota reliability, Land Rover panache....am I asking too much?
Or Mercedes all terrain, Audi allroad, volkswagen alltrack. The mazda CX 50 could be an option as well. It's an SUV, but it looks more like a high station wagon imo, a bit like the gen 1 & 2 Subaru Forester.
Jeep Renegade TH glad to hear you mention it guys...the thing that often gets overlooked is the price for the capability. New on the lot, my '19 Trailhawk was $22,700 (Sticker was $33,700) there were stackable year end incentives plus $2800 dealer discount. When you can get one for sub $23k...they look a lot more attractive for the price. (Yeah, MSRP pricing for them is ridiculous.) Put on better A/T tires and go run some Forest Service Roads or the Alpine Loop and enjoy! They've done Hell's Gate, so they are definitely capable.
Jondzadventuring is the guy you are refering to with the passport, check out his channel (anyone who wants to) to see how well the passport actually does with some light mods. It's not an off-roader, but for a soft-roader it holds it's own better than you would think.
I test drove an outback onyx xt. it was faster but the turbo was weird. it didn't seem that much better than my current outback. i was just telling my friend about that... the coolest new feature was the front camera. how do you feel about new direct injection? turbo? i don't think my outback is slow. i always drive by myself with no load. it is slower than my previous car. i like the CVT but maybe you have to buy brakes more often. paddle shifters are kinda cool i think CVT gearing has changed over the years.
Fun story about the RAV4, you can get a 1 inch spring lift from Eibach for it, and you can fit slightly bigger tires. Danny Rocksteady (youtube channel) has a good build that seems to hit the sweet spot
We love our 2 new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring’s with S-AWC. They are loaded with features like heated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, heated power folding side mirrors, 710 watt 9 speaker rockford fosgate audio system, dual zone climate control, sliding and reclining rear seats, dual panoramic roof with power sun shades, leather, rain sensing wipers, forward collision mitigation with high speed braking and warning and pedestrian detection, blind spot warning with lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, auto high beams, blind spot monitoring, radar cruise control, auto dimming mirror with home link, adjustable led headlights, led tail lights, Mitsubishi Connect with in car buttons for call center and sos with phone app with remote start and tons a stuff and airbag notification and such plus much more. The interior is very nice on the top trim Eclipse Crosses and super feature packed plus we got around $7,000.00 off MSRP on our top trim SEL Touring ones with S-AWC brand new. Plus the warranty, time tested and proven underpinnings and Mitsubishi reliability you cant lose. The S-AWC can handle off road quite well as you guys showed and its on road capabilities in the snow, rain, ice, gravel and mud is great. It is super safe and stable and candle handle any on road conditions with confidence. I have the Vredestein Quatrac Pro Tires on mine 225/55/18 (oem size) and all I can say is wow it rides so smooth and quiet and takes bumps so much composed compared to the Bridgestone Ecopias it came with. The Bridgestones were somewhat loud and hard riding where as the Vredesteins changed the whole dynamics of the vehicle and its so smooth and refined now with its ride and suspension. Plus its snow, rain and ice capabilities with the Vredesteins feels so predictable and safe.
I haven't driving the Passport, but for what the primary goal of this class of vehicles is targeting, it might hit the sweet spot. Tons interior cargo for camping/hauling, great engine, trailer capacity, Honda reliability..... I've narrowed my search down to the Rav Adventure, but since ya'll have driven both, how would you compare the awd system in the Passport vs the Rav? I live in rural N. Georgia mountains and drive dirt roads daily that can get a little messy and require a little ground clearance and I need good mileage. Rav seems to fit the bill, but I'd sacrifice some mileage if the Passport awd system is better ( plus the nice engine power) and more cargo/passenger space. Tommy, in the Rav Trd video you seemed to really like how it did, but in this overview chat it seems you changed your mind some? I really like the Forester and Outback, but really need reliability that will last past 100k without worrying about possibly buying a new dvt or head gaskets. Thanks for all the great videos and work, please keep it up. I'

@@EricMeatlikeaking I watched a video of driving sports TV where he took the onx up a snowy hill with a rough gravel road. I thought it done pretty good. Maybe I'm wrong but it looked to me like the extra power and duel Xmode really improved it capability. I was rather impressed.
There is a youtube video from driving sports tv of a 2018 jeep compass trailhawk in deep sand and looks like the standard automatic transmission cuts power when it dug itself to deep. CVT transmissions are not the only ones that cut power when pushed to it's limits. It has to do with the manufacturer's fail safe programming in the transmission so they don't destroy themselves.
Your are actually wrong about cvt transmission off roading vs a regular automatic in the case of not letting the wheels spin. I have seen (for example a newer Volvo video with a standard automatic transmission with a torque converter) that's all wheel drive going up a fairly steep dirt road hill and the transmission would not let the wheels spin either due to most likely the computer is trying to save the transmission from stress in it's programming.
So you’ve seen a video? We have tested almost every off-road worthy car for sale in America in real world off-road conditions like Gold Mine Hill or using rollers as part of our slip test. How many cars have you tested? How about this when you’ve tested personally tested at least 50 cars get back to us.
Watch the driving sports 2020 Volvo V60 cross country with an 8 speed auto transmission and going up a cross cut angle the transmission did cut power to the wheels with his foot to the floor.
And to add to my comment just recently posted there are also several other manufacturers with a conventional automatic transmission with the same issue of cutting power to all wheels when going up a steep dirt hill. So please stop blaming cvt's only doing this.
i have trd off road love love it.i got cause i like the package.does what i need it to do.i disagree with you tommy that it competes with the out back.it competes more with the subaru forester.
CVT's are not ideal for off road but neither are most crossover/suvs systems. People that want to go off road need to get a 4x4 pickup truck, jeep, or suv with a longitudinal type powertrain. The automobile industry is trying to fool consumers into thinking these unibody, low torque, fancy electronic AWD systems are the future. News flash! They're all hype and gimicks so manufactures can build cars cheaper, faster, and make more money off you. So far, there is no replacement for displacement and metal on metal gears with torque converters, PERIOD.
Honda Passports and Pilots are horrible for tall people. You would think a company like Honda could design a SUV with at least 43" of front legroom and a steering wheel that telescopes to match. C'mon Honda!

You should test out a 2021 Crosstrek Sport, same engine as the Outback in a smaller pachage.
SUBARU NEEDS TO GET RID OF THE CVT
i know I'm kind of off topic but do anybody know of a good place to stream new tv shows online?
@Kash Mitchell I use flixzone. You can find it on google =)

Good rundown, Micas. Where do you think the Nissan Pathfinder slots into this list? How about the Rogue AWD?
Body on frame gen good, unibody gen bad😉
I've seen a 2013-20 Pathfinder do well offroad, but the ground clearance needs to be higher.

Mitsubishi's CVTs have a better crawl ratio than the Subarus or Nissans.
You need to put Blaze on your channels. He could be your official mascot.
Older Ford Escapes should be included in the list I drive an '05 Escape with KO2's and it's a beast off road as well as comfortable on the highway

What about the Maxzda CX5 or Kia Sportage with rear lock?
