You guys are family, which is awesome and challenging simultaneously! Keep this type of dialogue going and keep polishing the gem. It’s actually a great dynamic, because these opinions exist in real family dynamics, especially when it comes to transportation
Thank you! Will do!
You guys need to work out your tumultuous relationship off the screen, it's getting kind of annoying.
@@Just_Joe71I personally think the generational differences they have actually show what it’s often like to talk about a topic in families. The amount of edginess lol is harmless and pretty normal in most family dynamics. I think maybe watch the podcasts they make where they aren’t a pair , you got options, but I think your opinion isn’t correct.
16:55 10000000% TOMMY!!! I don't think I have EVER heard a take on TFL I have MORE agreed with than this. The seemingly default setting most humans come programmed with of "New always better..." despite how good or great something may be to begin with is the driving force behind "change for change sake" and IMO is a major problem. In an industry where the "first" of something rarely gets it right, functionally and especially reliability wise, then perhaps always "chasing the dragon of progress" should be replaced with "always striving for quality improvements" and of course innovation when its ACTUALLY an IMPROVEMENT, not just a shiny new thing to dangle in front of the easily impressed masses who expect all new MY reveals to be like an iphone release.
I don’t know why you say we’re almost out of time. I don’t care if the video is three hours long. I’m still going to watch it but if someone has had enough. They will stop watching.
There is no way I am going to watch a 3 hour video. In fact I am less likely to start watching a video that’s 3 hours. Maybe an hour and a half but that’s REALLY stretching it.
Maybe they had someplace to be after making this video 😉. A busy year for both by the looks
They always keep it one hour.
Americans have severe ADHD. Watching or listening to the same video for 3 hours is like working for 8 hours; it’s just not happening. We need 2 hour work days and an autoplay feed of 5 minute videos while we chase squirrels and look at shiny objects.
Can’t help it, I love TFL. Been watching since Andrey’s job was to take brake temps of a truck after the Ike. I hope you guys keep growing and offer more videos.
God bless you russia.....
Oh, you came to the party late😂
I thoroughly enjoy your content whenever I get a notification I do try and watch your videos. Thank you. Have a merry Christmas and God bless each and everyone of you.
Thanks for the kind words!
The Fiat 500E is the perfect example of what happens when you use credits/subsidies to boost sales of something. It doesn't save anyone any money. It only makes it so companies build things that the market literally never wanted in the first place. Companies literally have to give things away for free for people to "buy" them.
Currently considered the best-selling electric city car in Europe.
Best-selling is easy when you are giving them away. I can have the best selling weed in my town if I could get the gov’t to pay for it.
You can’t say the market didn’t want them. You not wanting something doesn’t automatically transfer to the rest of us. Less hyperbole and generalization please 🙏🏾
@Cloud30000in Europe they do have some subsidies it they aren’t as expansive as here in the states anymore and still this vehicle remains one of the best selling Evs. Remember every market isn’t America, in Europe the streets existed before the car, so small nimble Evs easy to charge , in a city you often don’t drive more than 20 miles a day, fist 500e makes a lot of sense. See, ya gotta like come to the discussion to discuss with real points that ad to the dialogue 😅sheesh my guy 😂 funny weed joke though, it wasn’t relevant but it was funny I’ll give you that. 😊
Bots suck, TFL doesn’t!
As far as new vehicles, cars AND trucks, they all have a share on the naughty list - pricing is so out of control that it partially sucks all the fun out cars
Excellent video, very diverse and honest. I enjoy Tommy’s Jeep overviews and the father and son auto show segments, I simply can’t watch the drag racing videos or $100,000 pick up trucks for guys with the wee-willy’s. This channel has been fearless in exposing what’s wrong with the auto industry, along with showing us the positives in economy and design. Tommy is a grounding rod to his father’s passion, that is a sign of some good parenting…
Love listening to Tommy and Roman squabble over small points. If one says "A", the other says "Nay, nay! It's B." 20 minutes later, they reverse positions.
Tommy is so right about size of vehicles. And you are so wrong about people wanting more than they need. Fact is Chrysler is going down the tube because they have lots full of big trucks nobody needs.
Tommy, only the market should decide what gets made or not made. Want is what we are about, not need! We never got your cheap wagon No. 1 Roman. Love the father-son back and forth!
I feel your pain Tommy. There is a disconnect between what people 40yrs old think you want.
This conversation just confirms especially at these prices that I keep my 2018 Tundra.
You guys are a great combo. Love yall for the past 14 years!
I think the limitation of the 3rd row to certain trims has to do with payload; if you offer 7 seats but can only support 1000 pounds with off-road suspension, you may open yourself up to lawsuits from vehicle failure from being overloaded when using all 7 seats.
I hear you, I would counter by saying if that’s the case your payload rating is unacceptably low. Fix it
It was a pleasure watching Roman and Tommy. The video doesn't seem long when it has interesting content.
I understand what Tommy was saying about how huge and expensive cars and trucks have become. I really liked the Chevy S10 and GMC Sonoma because they are small and useful, and the interior was designed around the driver. I bought a Canyon because I thought it would be an improved version of the Sonoma, but I hate the size and interior of the Canyon. Late in 2025 or early 2026, the electric TELO truck will be sold to customers. Telo Founder/CEO, Jason Marks, and Founder/CTO, Forrest North say the same thing Tommy was talking about. They wanted to build a small (compact) electric truck the length of a 2-door Mini Cooper that has 10 inches of ground clearance, 2WD or all wheel drive, an 8-foot bed when the mid gate is down, and 350 miles of range on a proprietary 106 kilowatt hr battery pack that is 4 inches high and about 80 inches long. The Telo can carry 1600 lbs of payload and tow 6600 lbs. The Telo has a base curb weight of 4400 lbs (GVWR over 6000 lbs) with 16 inch rims and 215/65R16 All Terrain tires. The founders of Telo said it's a design mistake to put a large battery pack in a large heavy vehicle because it makes electric trucks inefficient. TFL should act quickly and put down 152 dollars on a fully refundable reservation (one dollar per inch of length) before everyone else realizes how popular this truck will become. Telo will start out with low production numbers to avoid overspending like many failed EV startup companies.
I'm looking into this I need to replace my B-2300 Mazda pick-up.
LOL! Tommy getting so snarky with Roman. I agree with Roman though; EVs are phenomenal for local and even medium range. I had to let mine go and I super duper miss it. Now, on a road trip, I cannot argue that the ICE is more convenient, but there are good, really good EVs for road tripping. Unfortunately, they are crazy expensive. I also really think that an EV truck could be the perfect farm vehicle. Especially if you are using the truck like we use ours where it only goes on short trips into town. I would like to see, perhaps, a heavy-duty e-diesel powered by electric but range extended by a little diesel generator.
True that. They’re good for local driving.
I get to call out Tommy! I have not been an EV fan, but the videos and especially TFL’s ownership experiences have gotten me to at least see a place for them - I may not be a future owner but I think I can see a place for them. Debate it, just do what you do and make the videos, have the discussion and educate your viewership 👌🏽
I am the same way you are. I could maybe see my self leasing one to go back and forth to work in. But I love my truck
The want vs need conversation is interesting. Could be an entire podcast. I had a thought. Imagine if every auto manufacturer only made cars and trucks based on base models with just the required safety and technology and no extras. We all would literally be driving the same class of vehicle because at the end of the day we all need transportation. Especially personal transportation in this country. That would be a different world.
For ranged extended vehicles, I’m curious what they’ll look like once the battery is dead. Does the gas range only equal 100 miles? Would I need to fill up with gas and charge for my range to be useful again?
I've always enjoyed your father-son dynamic. Roman you seem really pouty again - like your walk through SEMA talking about nobody giving you free iced tea. Thanks also for pointing out the huge subsidies the government hands out to the oil industry.
Tommy makes some common sense points, Roman sounds like a brain washed college student. Enjoy the content. Roman seems too young to sound soooo grumpy. Tommy's take on the EV credits is exactly on point.
Not really, EV will just become more competitive, but also less sales. But the credits are already factored into the price right now.
If dealers and manufacturers know consumers have tax incentives, dealers and manufacturers ad that price to the vehicle.
Another illusion of value for the consumer.
It's really just making the rich richer like usual.
@@lonerider5315yeah, it’s amazing how the EVs come in right under $80k where some of the incentives stop.
If they really can make high profits without the incentives, they wouldn’t be cutting production and eliminating many plans for future models.
If it isn’t profitable enough, it goes the way of the manual transmission.
Love this channel!
Thanks, glad you like it!
Tommy is 100% correct, the Grenadier and Defender are the best TFL vehicles of the year. In fact I'm strongly considering adding the Grenadier to the stable.
Roman may have some wrong takes but he deserves way more respect. Tommy, try going on your own and build your own empire. You can respectfully disagree no need to go off like that....
If you can get past the guilt from poor apartment dwellers having trouble buying food after paying taxes that go to something they could never utilize themselves because of their living situation and unfortunate lot in life, then the EV incentives are a great way to get a nearly free EV you don’t need as an extra vehicle to park in your 2 car garage at your nice single family house.
The poor will always subsidize the rich as long as money buys votes and makes laws.
Thank you for the way you report and talk about it, that makes you unique. On the subject of EVs: I have to agree with Roman, they are good for everyday use, but otherwise most of them are just soulless means of transportation. But in my opinion, the issue is not over yet...
As a longtime viewer and a person who's been through quite some things in my (work) life - as ofc many people have, let me make a suggestion: You two look like you've had quite the tough year behind you. Maybe I am wrong but a New Years resolution regard workload might be a good idea.
Seasons Greetings
Great discussion - enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve been very happy with my 1958 Land Cruiser. I also got it for $4000 under the sticker price.
Roman !! The new landcruiser is a landcruiser in name only. They didnt lower the price of the real landcruiser , they lowered the price of a vehicle they have named a landcruiser.
So in a couple years, can we road trip to Colorado and pick up a dirt cheap leaf coming off lease?
No because the Colorado dealers will sell those cars on auctions to dealers from other states and that second set of dealers will sell it to you for much higher price than they got them. 😃
@@is6566 it's still a used leaf, so I know I won't be paying a lot. I'm only in if it's dirt cheap. I'll be surprised if that's not the deal with most others. But, there are suckers out there still, and the dealers job is finding them.
I've come to like the idea of having an ev car for errands and going to school and work, but road tripping, I'd take a ice vehicle. I'd have an ev as a second car and an ice car for my primary. I think the big issue i personally have with evs is how politicalized they have become and trying to force them onto us. People should be able to choose between ev and ice, just like diesel and gas
Roman, As a viewer since day one , your Lambo Revhew in Europe I could watch that all day long. I hope you can borrow one for the week sometime. The blue color was awesome , I own a mini countryman 2023 All 4 s with 19 k white, silver metallic which I love to drive here in the ny suburbs!
Roman says thanks for watching and he will let you know if he ever borrows another Lambo for the week.
Good conversation guys.
Tommy, we have already made the point about free cars not being free. I won’t beat that dead horse. But it’s really not saving you money either by the time you pay taxes, insurance, tires, maintenance, and taking up another spot on your driveway.
And if you care about the environment, does it make sense to spend all that energy and resources to manufacture a throw away garbage car that will be likely thrown away in less than 10 years? Going to disposable cars isn’t good for the environment either. An argument could be made the best thing environmentally is one vehicle that can do everything, not a separate one for every use case.
Great job boys. Good points on both sides.
Thanks!
If I wanted to hear a child disrespect his parents, I’d go hang out with at people’s family dinners.
This is the problem with building a business and then bringing a disrespectful son or daughter into the business. They didn’t build the thing but they always seem to know better than the parent. They didn’t have to experience the grind to get there.
Disrespectful? This is a grown man talking to another grown man for our benefit. I think you are seeing things.
My favorite tfl talk episode of the year is always the best and worst. This one happened to get bogged down in a political discussion towards the end. That said, Roman is dropping truth bombs with his stance on the free market deciding what will sell. As a guy who grew up under communism, he knows of what he speaks! Merry Christmas 🎄 TFL
Toyota losing its reliability? Land Cruiser, Tachoma has had issues. Toyota is having issues
Y’all are so dramatic, they’re literally first year models you big babies😂😂
The thing is with the Tacoma, by the real numbers, it’s a really small amount of Tacomas in comparison to how much they sold. The internet is just an echo chamber for making it sound as if every Tacoma sold has an issue
@@MatthewTheCCMAthe tundra is going on year 3 of production and engines are still failing catastrophically.
They’re all having issues. Toyota has lots of company.
👏 Agree in Vehicles weight...My Chiropractor said my ICE SUV is no longer safe I need to be in a Truck EV to be safer from all wreckless drivers that you "Can't" sue anymore 🇨🇦 A devastation change in insurance.
I just can't afford a Rivian or Silverado EV (not available still, my reservation was made in 2022)
To me, the issue with EV subsidies vs say petroleum subsidies, is that petroleum subsidies are designed to lower the price of fuel. Something that benefits everyone, because it helps keep down the cost of transportation and everything that is transported. Which is essentially everything. So even though most people contribute something to that subsidy, they receive a benefit in exchange.
EV subsidies, on the other hand, only directly benefit people who buy EV's. Why not subsidize the FUEL instead? This is what the petroleum subsidies do. Everyone uses electricity. Every business uses electricity. If you're going to have government subsidies, they'll be a lot more palatable if everyone contributing to it, also benefits to some extent from it. Of course people who naturally use more electricity, EV owners for example, would benefit more. Which is how it would still help make EV's a more attractive option, without being so irritating to other people.
I haven’t seen a single Crown Signia yet. I think it looks pretty sharp. But too expensive I agree.
I have less of a problem with the fact that consumers want big cars, but more of the fact that EV regulations were made to increase efficiency and reduce consumables. Large electric vehicles defeat that purpose. Smaller aerodynamic cars focused on efficiency would match the nature of an EV rather than an inefficient machine like a Hummer.
Large EVs will inherently create more waste during their lifecycle, because of their weight and battery size.
Vehicles are also bigger due to safety regulations, which further decreases efficiency - which contradict the government's push for 'clean and efficient' vehicles.
In the end, its very possible small and efficient cars won't work in the current market because people think they need or want a big car. (Which is a whole other rabbit hole about consumer perception 😂)
So in short, I agree with Tommy that it is a shame car companies aren't taking the steps themselves to make cool, small, fun efficient cars in the United States. (Yet? I seem to remember chevrolet having these characteristics as the supposed main focus of the EV camero... if it ever comes out)
But i hope in the future we get these things. The Ioniq 5N is already an almost perfect example for sale today of what can be done with an EV platform. It's just too expensive right now, but i hope the technology will trickle down to cheaper versions and other competitors soon. And I'm all for improving fun, efficiency, and practicality.
Don't want any one of them. The Classics podcast needs to come back!
It’s a good discussion but Roman stating video after video that huge subsidies are given to the oil industry is frustrating because A) some of the the “subsidies” are results of murky math (for example, loans counted as subsidies) and B) even the real subsidies are going to a wide spectrum of products (plastics and chemicals made out of oil byproducts, etc) not only to gasoline for ICE vehicles.
The numbers for gasoline subsidies I found is $20 billion dollars per year in the USA. At the same time the US uses 135 billion gallons of gasoline annually. Calculating with $3/gallon fuel price the $20 billion subsidy accounts to 15 cents per gallon gasoline subsidy. It’s not nothing but it’s not a gigantic amount either.
I live robust debate, Tommy you are 100%, i believe Ineos Quartermaster n Scout are right trucks for future in their classic design just Holden WB ute which many Australian generations like timeless design from there allowing customers to add or improve features will give customers long term ownership, why would i have buy another truck every 10 years? But if i had to replace i dont want truck that is same or worse in been efficient, my parents had 75 HJ Kingswood, great car, around clock 3 times but i brought them 94 Commodore with ABS, efficient V6 by end of the year the Commodore had pay for itself, saving 5k in fuel as Kingswood was alcoholic on fuel.
Why did you trade the Mustang in?
Hi TFL
Why are your videos limited to an hour?
The problem with electric cars is that exactly what Roman mentioned, it is only a city vehicle. People cannot afford to have two vehicles to serve many purposes, we need one that can basically do it all. Let alone charging space at home and higher insurance. Also, what happens to the Fiat once it is returned? Who will buy it then? This whole green concept is not going to work out long term with that strategy.
Im still wondering, why cant we use the engine in hybrids to charge the battery while its parked.....
Then i can drive in silence, and let my engine provide energy more efficiently.
Manual or auto Mustang GT?
At this point, anything plug in hybrid is at the bottom of the list
Roman: "Our gov gives massive subsidies to big ag and big oil."
Ag is food production. Do we want to outsource that most basic human need? No, that is a national security imperative and if you don't think so, look at the nations that cannot feed themselves.
As for big oil, they pay to buy the rights to drill (gov leases) long before they they ever insert a dril bit. Sometimes those leases are even cancelled before they can try and then they have to sue and try to recover what investment they have alread made. Beyond that, petroleum is also a national security imperitive and if you don't think so, look at most of the nations in Europe and Asia who are highly dependent on imports to meet domestic needs. Some countries who were self-sufficient using nuclear like France and Germany have regressed and are now very vulnerable.
In a perfect world, there wouldn't be any subsidies but this isn't a perfect world and we have to keep certain things domestic. In fact, we have already become "too global" as the steel industry proves.
Bottom line: other taxpayers, both federal and fellow Coloradans, are paying for your 500e. I don't blame Tommy one bit for taking advantage of the situation but he is right that it shouldn't exits to begin with
Did you review the new Corvette E-Ray this year?
Yes, Tommy drove it.
I'm glad Tommy finally called his dad out on constantly interrupting him. It's disrespectful and annoying, Roman.
Tommy needs longer pants . Kankle game is tough 💪🏽
The base GT with the performance axel ratio.
Don’t change the Miata!
If a manufacture makes a car, electric or CVT, with simulated shifts must also offer not having the simulations!
Focus on the subject matter not on your personal views on electric cars and the deals in Colorado
How dodge shouldve released the new chargerin my opinion.
Throw a small engine with hybrid power, only to the rear. Then have a v8 hybrid.
Then release a stupid high Horsepower EV, like 1400hp+
If were going EV, lets walk, not run.
Wait…how the hell is it “unfair” to be receiving tax credits for EV’s??? You’re really going to puss you off when you find out just how much money you’re subsidizing the OIL COMPANIES!!!!!
The worst ones lately come from Toyota. Best ones from any other brand because they know how to compete. They care about effort and actually invest in it
Roman's description of "zipping around" in the i8 sounds incredibly boring to me.
Tommy you are ripping on the Rivians size when you know the next three in their stable are going to be much smaller and lighter. The R1S just got the highest safety rating. People buy Rivians for a purpose, just like the people who buy Prius's. In America I thought people have freedom of choice. And consequences for their choices.
Need for a hybrid Miata? Isn’t that what the upcoming Toyota Celica and Honda Prelude are going to be…?
What happened to your Nissan Leaf?
Why you wanna pay for extra window switches you use like maybe once in about two years?🤦♂️
Wow, a Fiat that is a piece of crap? Who would have thought that?
I think tax payers should get back some EV incentive money by taxing the electricity used at every DC charging station. I think 10 cents per kW\hr is a fair rate.
I switched to a Mach-e EV and I love it. Don't want to go back to gas for a daily. Charge it every night like a cell phone and you never have to worry about charging it.
Tommy looks so frustrated.
Everything Mercedes is EQ something in L.A 😎🌞
I think Mazda should stretch the Miata enough to fit their straight 6 twin turbo and give us a performance car instead of a Barbi car. Maybe later give it a little wider track and get a track version.
No Tommy, your dad is making perfect sense. You aren't listening.
I thaught this was a car podcast...can't wait for Roman to hand TFL over to tommy and go take a vacation!
I agree with you Tommy. I hate the government interference (finger on the scale) of the free market but you should take advantage of it since you are paying the taxes to support it.
Finger on the scale is why trucks are so popular. They're allowed to exist because of a loophole keeping them from having to be cafe tested. If that thing was closed up you would see sales tank and the companies would suffer because they were dumb and built their business models around a loophole.
You totally don’t know what you are talking about. Pickup trucks are NOT exempt from EPA testing. HD trucks had fuel economy exemption but not emission exemption. That’s why all the HD diesel trucks have EPA mandated emission equipment.
@@is6566 and if they had to be tested it would drop the manufacturers cafe averages to the floor and they'de have to pay a ton of fines.

Uncross your arms Roman- don’t close off
Careful Roman, your politics is showing.
Small cars are only good for commuting really. Big cars are good for more things. The market speaks for what it wants.
😎
You guys do push EV cars! Just stand by yr choice. Dont make excuses and say it’s the trend. I used to love yr channel but the last few years I watch maybe 1-2 video all the way tru. When it was just Roman, Nathan and Andre the content was amazing. Bring that back and you’ll get yr old followers back
Tommy, you said that you think the government maybe should have some responsibility in the large vehicles than crash into others. THIS kind of thinking is why diesel trucks have horrible emissions systems. THIS is why the government mandates the things they are for CAFE standards. They will say it’s for the good of the people, it’s not. IT IS an incredibly slippery slope that YOU are talking about, even though it was a split second and Roman talked you though why your thinking is not good on this.
I beg you to see the bigger picture for you and your children. Otherwise the government will begin to control everything for the future generations. They are given an inch and they take a mile. Did you know that all of the main stream news is owned by just six corporations that all use the same words to cultivate the narrative? Literally the exact same words…
Body language is so telling here. The entitled rich benefactor complaining about not getting the respect he demands from manufacturers,...is the one with his arms folded the entire time. The guy putting forth the effort, the research, etc, is the one who doesn't have a defensive pose' seems relaxed, is in control of the conversation, etc...I, am technically an old curmudgeonlike him, but I wouldn't want to act like one 😂
don't see any problem giving money away . thank God this crazy crap will end jan 6th
But it's free money, just ask Roman. FFS, he just doesn't get it.
How about giving away billions to corporations, billionaires and millionaires. Unpaid tax cuts are paid for the middle class. Jan 6th with mark the start of welfare for big business, big corporations and billionaires. If big oil didn't get all the welfare from the government they wouldn't survive. You know the CEOs wouldn't take a pay cut.
He doesnt go into office until the 20th genius. You really need to learn how the government works if youre going to offer your opinion on it.
is roman jewish?
What a weird question? Why does it matter?
The "weird question" may stem from the Menorah on the pump...

My god Tommy. It’s so obvious. Has your dad figured it out yet?
