    Thanks for the memories. I lived around Pt Adelaide as a schoolboy and rode my bike through there every day going to and from school. It was an extremely busy place in those days with trucks, cars, timber jinkers and some horses and carts. There were bond stores in the Port with their exotic aromas of spices etc. The pubs were full in the afternoon until six o’clock when they had to close Before the Black Diamond Corner had traffic signals installed it was so busy that travel through it was very slow, imposing caution. Delays were long but I never ever saw a collision in all the years I rode my bike through it I and in later years driving through it The shops were busy There was a definite vibrancy about the place and full employment was just about achieved. There were large engineering works, ships chandlers, shipping agents etc. Rope and sail merchants, the paint factories etc. In the middle of all this I remember stopping at a blacksmiths occasionally and being amazed at what he did and could do. Enormous draught horses and Clydesdales were like kittens in the blacksmiths hands showing their gratitude by keeping still while he lifted their enormous hoof and placed it between his knees to work on it. Those giant horses towered over him because he was quite short himself, but the mutual respect shown by horse and man was awe inspiring. I’m nearly 80 now and your youtube clip did me the world of good. These days memories are about the only thing I have left. Thank you again. Bill

      Thanks for your detailed insight. I moved to Adelaide 12 years ago and saw an abandoned Port Adelaide. How much that has changed in all that time till now.

    Yes, Old Port boy here, My grandfather was a wharfie as was my Father initially. I used to haunt the place when I was a boy, and there were many Characters alive at the time. After spending most of his life on the wharf my Grandfather was injured under the cranes on Dock 1, when a load came loose and fell on him. He survived but his arm muscles became wasted.
    I actually done my own mini video about the port years ago, bit have misplaced it. It was basically moulded to the writings of the Port Institute book. There was some history in that book and I believe that the Institute building shifted about 3 times at least.
    Many of the old people were buried at the Cheltenham Cemetery as is my Grandfolks. There is a statue of an old Fireman there. I believe 3 of them lost their lives in a ship fire that exploded in Dock 2 , One of them they only ever found 3 buttons of his Coat, and that is what is in the grave.

      Thank you for your detailed responses. There are so many stories like yours which aren't covered by historical archives. My husband's father was a wharfie there as well. Straight there to work when he arrived as a migrant from Malta, and he worked there till his premature death from cancer.

    Lived here all my life, and I'm 64 now, but I've never encountered a ghost. Nevertheless, it was a great video and you've only scatched the surface on the ghost stories. What I find fascinating are the rumours of underground tunnels under old various hotels that were apparently used for smuggling. Do they exist and can you look into it?

    • @ryansofly
      @ryansofly  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes I've heard about those tunnels. My brother in law is part of the psychic group in charge of these ghost tours, and these rumours remain just that... And never verified. In fact, when I was last at Kapunda Hotel a few years ago, they were digging the basement to try and look for rumoured tunnels... Yes they're supposedly in Kapunda as well!

    It was called Port Misery for good reason. They used to pay publican to pull people out of the Port River and they stored them at the local pubs between beer barrels. The first city mapped out by Colonel Light. Look up Broadway Kate she makes her self well known along with the headless lady in the blue dress a madam of a brothel in Port Adelaide. Most of its residence are buried at the Alberton Cemetery now a public park that was left in ruins until Cheetham cemetery was established. Most head stones were removed from Alberton cemetery. Life was cheap in Port Adelaide in its prime and it saw a lot of hard times and hard working people.

    I like Port Adelaide , I’ve been there a few times and like the feel of the place , although I’ve never felt the presence of a ghost yet , but theres still time I suppose . The title “ most haunted “ is popular is Australia . I live in what is regarded as the “ most haunted town in NSW “ . There’s used to be guided ghost hunts but the company went bust , probably due to the non appearance of the spirits 😂.

      There are plenty of hauntings here! The port dock hotel has a former prostitute that haunts it, that “Lipson house” bank is a private home downstairs but they rent the top floor out for $350 wk, most leave due to the bank manager’s ghost being present. The old customs house has a man in a Tuxedo, the old fire station was an autopsy room and is haunted, the cafe over the road was a morgue once, haunted. The railway museum and police station haunted too, the old phone exchange haunted. There are plenty of places.Haarts mill too. Just trying to access everything isn’t simple.

    Lived in the area for the first 30 years of my life but past 10 down south. Can't say i seen anything of the haunted type however the Port has always been a bit of a ghost town in terms of commercial and general foot traffic. Usually a pass through suburb when going places
