- I started this Potager garden five years ago, and it is in need of some work. Having worked in it, I have found some issues and some personal preferences, and I am ready to renovate it! In this video, I share with you what those issues and preferences are and how I am addressing them with my renovation plans. I also show what is growing now!

Welcome! I am Julia and I am creating a garden and home orchard in Vermont - in USDA zone 5a. I want to feed my family delicious, nutritious food and do so in a way that honors the earth and other creatures on it. I also love to grow pretty things! Join me in my garden and orchard as I learn to grow, harvest, and preserve.

Great video!
can't wait to see your new garden 👍
Thank you!
I have used the the concrete planter wall blocks from Home Depot and rebar to reinforce ( the blocks have a hole for this in the middle, so you can securely stack 2 or 3 blocks for higher beds). The blocks fit 2” planks, so I used 2”x 6” x 8’ wood boards. I used 3 boards per layer, I got one of the boards cut into 2 4’ lengths.
It’s super easy and very cost effective.
The blocks cost around $3.50 each. Highly recommend. I’m 71 years old and could do it myself!
For the weeds in your gravel pathways you could rake the gravel off, put cardboard down and then rake the gravel back. Or just put cardboard or tarps down on top and kill the weeds over the winter.
For the weeds I suggest putting cardboard down, wet it thoroughly & put some mulch over top. Keep the cardboard wet/moist. The cardboard will smother the weeds & then breakdown into the soil.
I know this is not much help for the gravel areas without a lot of work, but would be good in the beds. You can plant amongst the cardboard.
I have had good success in my garden with this method.
Thank you for the tip! I actually have done this in many of my beds and will do it again. I just need to stay on top of the weeds that blow in. The gravel actually has landscape fabric underneath it, so the issue is seeds (mostly grass) blowing in and germinating and growing in the gravel. I hope you are having a great season in the garden!
I had the same problem in my Denver garden. I raked back the gravel, laid down strips of old stained carpet that I filched out of a dumpster, raked the gravel back over it. Gravel stayed tidily in place. Carpet is porous and the water got through, but no light to encourage weeds. Dropped the number of weeds intruding not the beds quite a bit (not, sadly 100%,though).
That is an interesting idea! Thanks for sharing! I do have a room where I want to get rid of the carpet, so I will keep that in mind.
I use tarps to cover problem areas. I dont use any chemicals at all. My problem areas are perrenial beds. So I try to keep annuals separate to perrenial.
