EXACTLY! I've read up about CRISPR, but my input should never have any real weight on the debate to use or not use it. Only qualified (let me repeat that, QUALIFIED) scientists should decide. I say that because there's a lot of bad science going on out there (check John Oliver's report on scientific research).
I have to disagree. Scientists used to universally agree on some very stupid and harmful things, and many still do. I think that anyone should be able to debate these topics as long as they bring valid criticism to the table. This technology is going to effect everybody on the planet at some point or another.
agreed with Yewtub, Scientists will think like scientists, if they are going to fuck up the world, let everyone get involved in a debate, because earth belongs to us all and whatever results occur, it will effect everyone
I feel like it will go the same way as antibiotics if we use it where we are met with a threat of a constantly changing threat so we try to stop but it just keeps changing to survive the changes

In 2021 there was 617,000 deaths from malaria which is 1717.8 deaths a day or 71.5 deaths an hour which also equals over 1 death a minute and this possibly could have been prevented
Well at least you dont use it as camflouge, also you can say the same thing for fur coats except some don't kill the animal and only try to get the fur of the animal.
because of the plasmodials that malaria uses other helpful bacteria use plasmodials and the mosquitos today transmit the plasmodials to other animals that have bacteria cultures in them that use them in ways we dont understand, making a mosquito that cant transmit them could impact the environment in ways we cant discern yet
I contracted malaria in utero (thanks mum), it was obviously untreatable at the time. The doctors in Papua New Guinea treated mum with tetracycline which gave me grey teeth. Throughout my life I’ve suffered relapsing malaria symptoms and liver problems. Luckily, as an Australian, I’ve access to excellent free public health care. There are so many who don’t. I wouldn’t wish this disease on anyone.
Mario says: This technology could be used for dangerous purposes, if used unethically or in a incorrect matter it could present many new problems to our ecosystem, it might turn out worse for the people we’re trying to protect. Luigi says: If he can fly he can die!
Hello, even if used for this purpose has some danger. This has to be applied together with the education of the population, especially those living in tropical forests. For the planet's population is increasing even with fatal diseases. Without them people have to know how to use contraceptive methods. Otherwise the population will grow at a faster rate.

Yall are taking crispr tech too lightly. Theres a reason why they are taking long. Editing genes can have unintended consequences, so much so that instead of malaria, we get a whole new disease which is not curable. A little thing such as this can wipe out humanity. Hence why, it is not used readily. There are lots of amazing thing u can do with it. For ex, making babies who are resistant to hiv virus. But again, every action has a reaction. And till we learn that, its sensible to not use it.

You'd know what would be cool if that happens? What if it has a chance to change (insert enemy monster here) in some way? ex. giving it the ability to inflict you with some sort of fire-damage, or another ex: making its attack lower
The sword will work like this, whenever you hit an enemy you would gain +5 points of health back. And if you'd got 5 kills with it you would be able to heal you and your friends to full hp.
Only those who can understand gene editing like scientists and other intellectual people should have a say, for if we're going to trust this into the hands of politicians, they'll probably make the wrong decision
Nicolo John B. David indeed. Politicians do things that give them recognition and popularity, not things that are wise and right. The decision should be made by non-sided commission of the best scientists who know the topic, messing with nature is risky.
Huh... Building an underground ecosystem does seem not like a terrible idea... But it would be silly expensive and there would be a slight chance of unintended escape if people are not careful.
finally a smart comment, but in this case i think it should run for 3-5 years, and introduce a multitude of different viruses to see how the new genetically mosquitos react. Also i think you would need all types of live stock to see what happens to them when bitten.
Actually... They have already tested it. That's where he got his numbers from. I remember the papers from a while back that they were really surprised when 95% of the mosquitoes took the gene when it should have not been possible.
That is a very good comment, but then again they will have to spend an extraordinary amount of money to make this happen. And, I'm pretty sure politics will get in the way.
"The public discussion is way behind the technology in this case." So leave the public out of the decision. The people who know what they are doing should be the ones who have a say in if it's done or not, not people who don't understand a word of what's being talked about and just have an opinion for the sake of having an opinion.
Under normal circumstances I would not have said something like this. I do believe that the public has a right to voice their opinions but when it's a stupid opinion based on no facts and only speculation then they shouldn't be aloud to hinder progress by complaining about something they know nothing about.
Only have to take the vaccine public discussion as evidence, that normal people will believe incorrect facts given by a celebrity. The poor scientists that work hard to make a difference and they just get shit on, because their studies don't seem important to the general populace.
While a part of me is inclined to agree that the people who know the most should be in charge. We are talking about modification of a species on a global scale. This has ethical concerns beyond wiping out malaria as the question also arises, where is the line where we stop?. Which is why a public discussion needs to happen. You don't need to know the technical details of how CRISPER works to have an opinion on the ethics. A small section of society that works in labs should not be able to make decisions that have ramifications that affect not just us, but the planet itself.
Masterwolfman i guess you like Nazi policy then, go Hitler, plus for all we know malaria is a huge part of the ecosystem, and killing them off would cause something catastrophic to happen.
Sjws that know nothing about the subject "UUUUUUU PLAYING GOD IS WRONG!!!1!1!" "UAAAAAA YOU SHOULDN'T MESS WITH STUFF LIKE THIS! I NEED A GLUTEN-FREE VANILLA BEAN LATTE TO HELP ME FORGET THIS!" the type of people that, if there was a vaccine for cancer, proved by scientists to be 100% safe, they wouldn't let their children get it because they're so fucking sure that it will give their special little snowflake autism. That type of person.
+WanderingRandomer you've put it best(even if you were just joking about the shape), Crispr is not the/a sword of evil's bane, but rather a dramatically powerful tool however it might be used.
I like how slowly, we are figuring out how to bend the world around us. Instead of adapting to new conditions, we make those conditions into what we are used to, since adapting takes longer. If we keep at a pace of advancing like we currently have(and we probably won’t it should get faster) then probably in the next 10,000 years we can bend reality itself.
Don't tip the hat too far... a man once did so and it wasnt pretty. A black hole erupted, the 2nd purge began and the pilgrims were resurrected. Lets just say that the tipping of hats is a risk not worth taking.
@@freelanserns187 so let's close hospitals, I guess? Maybe additionally let's ban soap and disinfectants so that our population won't go out of control. What about some famines now and then? Great idea!
@@olska9498 I'm not saying any of that and for your information i fully support vaccination ether by law or other means we need to keep the population under control because if we don't malaria or not we will all die
Exactly, mosquitoes don't kill anyone, only their pathogenic payload does. The only kind of person this would hurt would be someone who can't make additional blood, which would always result in a miscarriage anyway.
All religons are "religons of peace." No religions are peaceful. If there are super insane followers of any religon, they will do harm. (Islam just has the most insane people)
yes exactly! Create a large dome and release modified and normal mosquitoes into it, wait a couple of generations and preform tests on the mosquitoes, do this more than a few times and then finally determine if its safe.
Esme Lotte It could be done satisfactorily as you say. Since a male mosquito lives a period of one week. while the female up to 1 month. Knowing this, in a year you could observe up to 12 generations at a minimum on a much larger scale
i think screw it, we set off the first nuke expecting it to crack the crust of the earth, as long as this stuff is used carefully it can be the greatest tool ever invented.
i think if we don't try we'll never know. we don't stop using hammers because they can be used to bash someone's head in, and we don't stop using scissors because you can stab someone with them. with great reward comes great risk, of course, and no corners should be cut, but this could be to genetic engineering as the combustion engine was to transportation
+Mitchell Anthony the question is not wether we should try it or not. the question is when shoukd we use it and is it ready to use, is more research needed ? the fact that we already set off a nuke is a bad argument and false reasoning. its nog because bad things happened we should continue doing things recklessly.
Your parallel examples fall short in the nature that using a hammer or a nuke is a one time event. Whereas if we introduce this new genome to the genepool it will be self-replicating, and expanding. And we cannot know for sure WHAT will happen exactly.
To be honest, I think that having the anti-malaria mosquitoes would be one of the greatest things humans have ever done, since malaria can only be harmful to us. So if it's only harmful to us, why not get rid off it? It'd be better for us, and possibly other species as well.
Same reason of how we are eradicating mosquitos well eradicating the diseases Mosquitos spread. But I don't know if when someone is given CRISPR it's genetic. That's my only question
i don't think you can just flip a switch in their DNA or add something like that the only i see them building a resistance to that stuff is by evolving by themselves but im not a scientist im a student that's training to be a doctor behind a screen with a keyboard and im not too caught up on the subject of DNA
Making these videos is not easy. It takes time, research, animation, editing, voice acting. You can't just open premiere and click the "make video" button and be done
Sorry, but incorrect. This video isn't about viruses, so that's a different subject. Also, the vast majority of viruses are not adapted for humans, thus we don't get infected by them, and unless you're a veterinarian, or someone other profession that works a lot with animals, especially sick ones, you won't notice it much. There are entire families of viruses that only attack bacteria. Then it is true that some viruses are very quick to mutate, one obvious example is the influenza virus, but even then, we are slowly figuring out how to target the parts of them that don't and can't mutate like that. If a parasites reservoir species can be made immune before it can find a way around the immunity, it becomes extinct as it no longer has a viable environment to reproduce in.

Only the scientists that understand this can truly debate the topic as they know 1000 time more than the average person on this subject and all possibilities.
Where's the fun in that tho?
Now that I think of it, using CRISPR to change the genes of a creature is the biological equivalent of making a mod for a game.

this technology is 6 years old why haven`t we still used it yet
because of the plasmodials that malaria uses other helpful bacteria use plasmodials and the mosquitos today transmit the plasmodials to other animals that have
bacteria cultures in them that use them in ways we dont understand, making a mosquito that cant transmit them could impact the environment in ways we cant discern yet

@@barrylyndon5552 I suppose the fear is something worse will happen, or at least bad but uneccessary because it was avoidable.

Only those who can understand gene editing like scientists and other intellectual people should have a say, for if we're going to trust this into the hands of politicians, they'll probably make the wrong decision
Nicolo John B. David well said!
Nicolo John B. David indeed. Politicians do things that give them recognition and popularity, not things that are wise and right. The decision should be made by non-sided commission of the best scientists who know the topic, messing with nature is risky.
Nicolo John B. David No shit sherlock
Agreed. What the fuck does trump know about genetic modification?
Terezi Pyrope Agreed.
I say we test it in an isolated, manmade system first. That should reveal the majority of any unforseen consequences.
Oh no, a hundred mosquitos have a 1% chance to escape into a world full of billions of them.

While this is elitist af, i am tempted to agree with you on this one.
Masterwolfman i guess you like Nazi policy then, go Hitler, plus for all we know malaria is a huge part of the ecosystem, and killing them off would cause something catastrophic to happen.

i think screw it, we set off the first nuke expecting it to crack the crust of the earth, as long as this stuff is used carefully it can be the greatest tool ever invented.
just because one thing didnt kill us all doesnt mean something else we dont understand wont
that's why Mitchell noted "as long as this stuff is used carefully"
i think if we don't try we'll never know. we don't stop using hammers because they can be used to bash someone's head in, and we don't stop using scissors because you can stab someone with them. with great reward comes great risk, of course, and no corners should be cut, but this could be to genetic engineering as the combustion engine was to transportation
It'd be better for us, and possibly other species as well.

not why, what could we alter to help the bees?
Make the bees more resistant to pesticides that are currently killing them?

Mom, get the CRISPR!
WE'RE GONNA SAVE THE WORLD!!
You know that virusses will always adapt to us right? They've been on the earth far longer.
