    AWESOME video and information sharing! I will be using your excellent knowledge and test results to set up for crabbing in the Florida panhandle Gulf Coast area of Cape San Blas @ Port St Joe. Blue crab will be the target. Here we have the unique choice of crabbing in the St Joe Bay (thick grass beds with many open sugar white sandy areas) on the east side of the Cape OR the gentle Gulf coast surf on the west side. Cape San Blas is a very narrow peninsula that extends 12~16 miles northward into the Gulf! In addition, the St Joe Bay has little to no fresh water inflow and is in the list of the very few salt water bays with little to no fresh water inflow in the world! This makes for crystal clear water, thick lush grass beds with sugar white sand flats, dunes and shorelines both in the Bay and Gulf surfside! Bay scallops vs oysters thrive here! Surf wave action and current is small in the Gulf. The first sand bar is within casting distance! The Bay generally has weak tide flow current except at the canal mouth and at Bay entrance at max tide flows! All the above said, I will need to scale down the crab snare a bit, compared to how you fish the LEFT coast of the USA! Due to cost and sketchy availability, I am in hopes I can find a suitable replacement for the 100# test Mason rock hard nylon. I do not have experience with nylon fishing line, but I do understand the harder and stiffer the line, the more memory it will have and memory results in snare loops that will tend to stay sprung 'open' and that will slide with less resistance to 'close' when needed! I am familiar with Fluoro, mono, braid and grass trimmer line. For the loops I see only nylon or fluorocarbon as the only good options. In my online research, everything I read (true or not) is that fluorocarbon is the hardest and stiffest of ALL lines! In addition, all fluorocarbons ARE NOT the same! The more expensive ones have coatings and treatment to make them LESS hard and stiff...exactly opposite of what a crab snare loop needs. Did you test only Seaguar floros? It may be that only the cheaper 100% fluorocarbons lines (with no coatings or special process treatments), may be the hardest and stiffest of all??? Until then, I will assume the Mason hard rock is the king, but I will try some of the 100% fluorocarbons and see how stiff they are! Thanks and keep up your good work for all of us!

    Hi: I very much enjoyed your very detailed video on construction of crab snares. I tried carb snaring for the first time yesterday. I had viewed a view a while back and it said that the snare loops should be arranged in an the upright position. Today, I ran across your video shoeing the flat arrange of loops seemed to work best for you. Yesterday, it seemed I could see crab had been pulling my squid bait out the side of the snare and "under" the vertically arranged loops. So now, I going to re-arrange my loops in flat position like you said worked best for you. You have many arrangements of the loops. How do you decided which to use? What bait do you prefer? Do tides matter? Is season of year important?

    Question on the crimps? For Mason line. Its the oval 1.5mm crimps from Hi-Seas right? And blue trimmer line is the loop crimps the 800pcs?
    So if i go all trimmer are all the crimps going to be loops? In my amazon cart i have GS-F-500 1.5mm 500pcs from Hi Seas for my mason line. Is this all correct?

    Hey the maxi edge currently available doesn't have enough sides as the one you used. Only 6 sides instead of 8. I would imagine it would function pretty similar but curious if either you or someone has used it. 8 sides does have more of a rounded surface area and would appear to cause less friction but to be quite honest the line is so small that it probably wouldn't matter much. Just curious what ur thoughts were...

    Moon, you must have said your mantra then gotten into the mind of the crab. I too was getting the line from Masson and the double barrel sleeves but the shipping was killing me.
    I started getting my line and sleeves at Bass Pro but you better know what you need because the salespeople are clueless.
    I don't crab in the rocks so my lines don't wear out. Well, there are those rocks out front of our secret spot that I get tangled in once in a while.
    So, the big secret is the Gorilla Glue.
    Is that what you use to get the loops into the more upright position on your Dragon Tooth snare?
    How I removed the memory of the line was seriously stupid on my part. I won't even tell you how stupid I feel now. I got them straight but I really worked too hard to do it. Just boiling water, my bad!!
    Can't thank you enough for the video.
    Is there one on the Dragon Tooth too?
    I seem to catch more when using the upright loops but that may just be how I have them mounted??
    I'll now look for your video on refurbishing the snares. I have done it in the sink but I'm pretty sure you have a better way!

      @@TheJoyofLiving I just learned not to do something on my puter or you loose everything! Last night I removed the loops from a twinkie snare I have with no weight. I made a new lead mold and will add the lead today. I want to try making a better dragontooth out of it. It is one that I make to add weight onto when I ren into different tides.
      I'll wait until I see the D-tooth made.

    1.7 crimps will be too big?

    • @TheJoyofLiving
      @TheJoyofLiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1.7 will work. it's not the best for 100lb and ok for .065 trimmer lines. Here's the break down.
      For Clear 100lb - 1.5mm/best; 1.6mm/ok; 1.7mm/slightly big but workable
      For Trimmer .065 - 1.5mm/too small; 1.6mm/perfect fit; 1.7mm/ok
      If that's not a clear explanation, hit me back. CRAB ON!

  • @fishhunt9874

    Why do you use the ruler to measure every one of the loops? Why don’t you just hold the cut one in your hand and run it along the line off the spool and cut it the same length!

    • @TheJoyofLiving
      @TheJoyofLiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I tried that at the beginning. Too slow. My way is quicker with higher percentage of length accuracy. Good comment though. CRAB ON!

      @@TheJoyofLiving
      I can not see how it could be slower 🧐. If it is you are doing something wrong. Just cut a stick 13” long and put a cutter on the end of it. That would make the work go by really fast.
