The coolest thing about your channel is that you don't act like you know everything. It is fun to learn along with you as you try different things and learn by trial and error.
Stellvia Heonheim yeah but a lot of people who make videos act like they know it all of course. Especially fishing channels, there are so many ways to fish there’s an arguement to be made that their is no wrong way to fish.
And he shows the reality of fishing. He doesn't just show the catches and brag about how he's absolutely slamming them. He shows the missed hookups, quick releases/came off the hook and days when he only catches a few little fish. Even stuff that most people would edit out like mistakes, motion sickness, nets getting hung up on everything in the boat (we all know this pain!) and other comedy gold that makes it feel real. Quality videos.
Little trick the next time you cook live crab - Whether you steam or boil them, when getting the water up to temp, add about 2-3 Tablespoons of white distilled vinegar for every quart of water. The vinegar makes the meat a lot easier to pull out of the shell and makes it taste a little bit sweeter. :)
Crab butter isn't eggs. I don't know why everyone thinks it's crab roe/eggs. It's the equivalent of a pancreas and liver. That's why it's so full of cholesterol. Plus, you're eating a male crab, how could it be eggs? I still would eat it unless the domoic acid levels are too high. I cook the crab butter in crushed garlic and butter until cooked through and runny. The stir in scrambled eggs. Then it doesn't taste so bad to the uninitiated. You could do the same with Uni.
Some advice, if you want it; they are attracted the the smell, the blood, etc. Chicken feet are basically worthless. The crab will need to wander into the pot accidentally to even notice them. You need meat that loses lots of blood. Red meat is obviously the best option but it is also expensive enough to make it cheaper just to eat the meat and not use it as bait lol. Chicken is the most used option because of the blood content and the price. If you really want good crab bait, go buy one of those giant bags of Costco or Sam's Club chicken. They add extra blood to the bag for weight so the meat is in prime condition right out of the bag lol. I'm east coast. Chesapeake Bay. Blue crab. Trust me, man. The more bloody and disgusting the meat, the better. Dude. Go to a grocery store and ask to buy their pork shoulders and butts that are expiring. Old chicken and thigh quarters or necks and gizzards. You'll need a bigger boat to haul in all the crabs.
I've been using fresh chicken drumsticks with Dungeness crabs for 3 years and it works GREAT. Rock crab like the more "disgusting" meat. I think he was crabbing shallow at Doran beach which in my opinion can get fished out very quickly in the season. Deeper water and multi-day soaks will lead to multiple limits of Dungeness simply by using chicken drumsticks.
You should have a contest where one of your subscribers can join you! My son and I would love to enjoy a day with you! We are locals in NorCal. Awesome video!
crab tomalley (the yellow gut stuff) is an acquired taste. I used to hate it because it was so bitter, but now i LOVE it. I can't eat too much though because it's too rich. But it's often used to make a paste/sauce for stir-fry.

Matt's, Vietnamese use the guts to make a sauce to stir fry the crabs with or my mom makes a killer fried rice with it. Saute with a little salt, dash of flour or starch to thicken....delicious! Eating it straight up like you did, some can be bitter. But all in all, done right, it should not be fishy and have a very rich taste.....like your favorite.....seafood BUTTER! 👍
I’ve been eating that yellow stuff in the body of the dungeness crab since I was a kid. My grandma showed me to mix it with white rice and get the juice from in there too.
From a crab "addict" here since I was 10 years old (I'm now into my forties) so you do the math. Neways, here's my take. Depending on the season and what the crabs has been eatting that "crab butter", I believe is the liver, like in lobster, there is the green stuff in the head. "Head butter" which can be sweet and almost taste like uni. The red stuff would be the unlaid crab roes. So you won't find them in the males.

I love your videos dude. And the people you bring with you are always entertaining in some way lol. You have inspired me to go fishing again after years.
Half a million subs Matts, you deserve it bro. Really digging the B.B 2.0, its the perfect size for what you do, and its not a headache and doesn't cost a fortune to get out there. Tight lines my man.
I personally prefer the red/rock crab. I like the sharper, sweeter flavor. The times I've tried them side by side, the Dungeness was kind of bland, comparatively
@FunkyMonkeySpank yeah, most of my friends are the same way. Although since I've developed a major allergy to shrimp the last couple years and most people with an allergy to one also react to the other, they're both out for me now. 😞
from my experience the rock crab(really red one) has a sweeter and more fattier taste. The dungy is good too but if you curry it like we do the red one throws more flavor. Not the muscle crab though. We call it the muscle crab due to the big claws it got. That one is on the bitter side. But both the dungy and rock crab is good.
Rock crabs don't have a lot of meat in the legs, it's hard to get out of the body too. Claws are good and meaty. I used to pick out every piece of meat from the rock crab and serve it in the shell like its own bowl and eat it all at once. Very rich and nutritious
I love your videos I live in Oregon and I prefer the red rocks over the dungies they are sweeter meat and overall bigger front claws with more meat but either way they are both very very good eating !!

They look a lot like Stone Crabs from the east coast. As far as I know about the stoneys, you can take a claw as long as they have another over a certain size. They are real good, and their shells are really hard and thick. I've also had these 'Jonah Crab' claws from BJs and they are eerily similar. Are these Rock Crabs the Pacific equivalent?

Love it when you post a crab video! I grew up eating Maryland blue crabs, and we call that yellow stuff the mustard. I like it when just a little bit gets on the meat from the lag chambers, adds a little bit of funkiness, but too much is kinda gross to me. I'm not sure what your friend is talking about with the parts he pointed out to eat---those look like the gills, and they are _not_ good to eat, as you found out lol. In fact they are the parts responsible for filtering out all the garbage in the water that the crab is breathing! I bet it tasted kinda metallic. Side note--if you don't clean out the shells and the gills get left in the shell, if you make stock from it it will taste metallic. (Learned that the hard way.) Anyway, thanks again for another great video, looks like a fun day out on the water. Nothing beats fresh crab cooked minutes after being caught. Cheers :)
Coming from the blue crab capitol of the world, boiling crab definitely degrades the flavor. Steaming is the way to go! The butter is the bomb. Great video as always.
grew up next to the ocean been eating crab and lobster my whole life. can honestly say i have never 1 time used butter or garlic butter,i really just apricate the crab flavor itself.
I love the in-trap GoPro footage! More of that! I think it would be interesting to see some in a conical if you can rig that. With the rock crabs just take a pair or handheld garden clippers and lop off the bigger claw and toss em back. That way they still have one to fight with and the claw will grow back in a couple weeks.
I have been watching you for about a week now and I don’t really like to go fishing. However for some reason when I watch your vids I get inspired not to fish but to learn new things thank you.

I was visiting BC Vancouver Island and did crabbing for both. We started with chicken and salmon were running so we used salmon guts and roe and got about 10x the crabs with using fish guts vs chicken, just food for thought.
Great Videos, I think there is a limit of 10 crab pots per boat which you did not exceed. But as long as you don’t have any fish on board you can use as many rods as you want depending on what you are targeting. Once you have a fish you are limited to rod/hook combo of that fish. This is what was told to me by fish and game, they said if you’re using a sabiki to catch anchovies that’s fine as long as you have no fish on board. Once you have a rockfish you can only use 2 hooks on your sabiki even if your targeting anchovies. Then if you have a salmon on board you gotta pinch your barbs even if fishing for anchovies.
@J G It sounds dumb, but if California doesn't monitor and regulate this stuff, pretty soon there won't be much to fish. There's a lot of science that goes into those rules, believe it or not.
Never eaten crab with butter. Here in West Australia we get the blue swimmer crabs and its - cook , peel and sprinkle the meat with a little pepper and splash some brown malt vinegar over the meat. Then grab some fresh bread and make a crab sarni (Sandwich). Man I now need to go crabbing. !
I just recently started getting back into fishing and watching your videos makes me just want to get back out on the water sooner and I feel like I've already learned a few new tricks and tips so thank you for your videos they're actually my favorite videos on TH-cam as of right now
God I'm hungry now. Love crab butter! I can eat it straight up by the spoonful, but the male (yellow) butter makes a great Vietnamese dirty rice (garlic, maybe a little soy sauce, mix it all and fry). It's the females that have the red butter. It's rich in a different way, and more solid. And yesss, red rock crab for the win! I've always thought they were sweeter!

Dungeness for sure. Without a doubt. 7 months late, but absolutely certain.
Try That crab butter try it again but put some lime or lemon, some red pepper and butter, mix it up after with or without some meat and its delicious.
Says put alit bit of butter but really put the whole butterstick.
I grew up eating everything organs included so I find it quite good and delicious...great video by the way...
Im sorry theres no Crab like Dungie Crabs, Second Best is Real Alaskan Snow Crab!!

So what is your ethnicity

i know!!! hahaha
grew up next to the ocean been eating crab and lobster my whole life. can honestly say i have never 1 time used butter or garlic butter,i really just apricate the crab flavor itself.

Nuri Dayanta real asians aren’t scared of food.
So that’s the person who voice dubbed for Po’s dad in Kungfu Panda.
I have been watching you for about a week now and I don’t really like to go fishing. However for some reason when I watch your vids I get inspired not to fish but to learn new things thank you.
Wait, so what's your ethnicity?
Joey Zuddz 🤫
Hes obviously an albino black
*ANYWAYSSSS* 💀
I reckon half African American and half Korean
I think he is austronesian..
I'm from Vancouver Canada, I find dungeon taste better and more meet than red, red only have claws. Also I was told to marinade your chicken with peanut butter as best bait to catch crabs
Confirmed! hes not filipino, he didnt sip sip the crab eggs. haha
That underwater footage from the cages is so cool!

For me I love the inside of the red and dungeon... You just got to grow up witht the taste or get use to it and I grow up eatting it
I was visiting BC Vancouver Island and did crabbing for both. We started with chicken and salmon were running so we used salmon guts and roe and got about 10x the crabs with using fish guts vs chicken, just food for thought.
I think we'd all love to fish with Fisherman's Life
Great Videos, I think there is a limit of 10 crab pots per boat which you did not exceed.
I just recently started getting back into fishing and watching your videos makes me just want to get back out on the water sooner and I feel like I've already learned a few new tricks and tips so thank you for your videos they're actually my favorite videos on TH-cam as of right now
I dig these collabs with you and Fishing Chef, please do more.
The rails are here for the butter boat 2.0!!! Also, that underwater cam was amazing :o The school of fish swarming it
