Ok this video we go deep in details about the 120 year history and the families that owned it which were only 2 during that period.
The first being the Fry family and the second the Robertson family.
Put on your detective hats as you will be overloaded with street directory and ancestry information that back tracks to locate family and also relevant missing homes that also once stood around this beautiful old Villa.
Twists and turns while researching provide some pretty interesting information that you will be able to watch over and over again to wrap your head around and enjoy picking up more and more clues.
And of course we take an up close and personal tour of the home to celebrate and make tribute to place that provided so many memories through lives lived and lives lost here also.

I agree ,I hate how historic things are being destroyed . People should treasure ,the true craftsmanship of these buildings . We can learn a lot from our ancestors and history.
I agree! That home deserves to be moved and restored. Instead it will be knocked down and some shoddily built cookie cutter piece of crap will take its place. This poor house had some shit remodeling/additions done to it but that’s easily fixed

Oh, this one made me feel just sick. It was such a gem and wouldn’t have taken much to bring it back to its full beauty again. Such an absolute waste...😢
I’m wondering if the doors between the parlor and dining room were done fairly soon after the home was finished, if they’re not original. I think you’re correct - the glass just isn’t quite right to have been put in at the same time that the home was built and I think the hardware would have matched the hardware from the other doors.
I loved the research! You did a very thorough job and your presentation was so well done. You explained it in a way that was very clear and made it interesting enough to hold anybody’s attention. I’ve been known to go down a rabbit hole or two researching for a day or two something or someone random that I see on the internet. For the record, I think Mr Skuse was the victim of murder at the hand of Mr Bowen who then committed suicide, perhaps horrified at what he’d done. There was no mention of possible suicide for Mr Skuse, but it’s stated plainly as a possibility for Mr Bowen’s death and I think that’s significant. I think the same is probably true for Mr Forster since he died at his own home, although it could also have been a tragic accident. Just throwing that out there. 😉
Thank you, Paul, for this video and for helping make clear how important it is to do whatever is necessary to preserve homes like this one. If only someone had proactively seen to it that this property was Heritage Listed! Hopefully the owners of the house 3 doors down will be moved to protect their home from the same fate.

Lucinda yes I now agree the doors were added later and quite a bit later as the wood exposed during salvage looked not as old as the home. Maybe when the bathroom was done they did them also which would be around the late 50`s when it went on the market. Cheers for watching :-)

Greedy developers knock these down and build new houses that wont last half as long...

Just loved the history with this one, it makes the story of this beautiful old home so much more than stone and wood. The joys and sorrows and struggles of the families as they lived here , the changing world. The garden probably extended behind the home as well. Such a shame to see this beautiful old lady demolished, it brought me to tears. Thank you xooxxoxo

Oh what a beauty, you provided extensive research and footage of this beautiful villia. I truly appreciate all of your hours it took to make this video and to share with us all. To see this beauty go down does make one feel a bit sad, so many interesting details in this home that is not available today either the workmanship or materials. This is a valuable resource for anyone that is researching homes built during this period.

Oh wow, I remember that house. Loved looking at it as we drove past. What a shame it didn't make the list. This video is awesome, cos Eliza Starr is in my family tree and my grandma knew the Fry's. This is really giving me a lot more to follow to add to my tree. Awesome stuff.

I want to thank you so much for the history of this home and its occupants. The home was delightful and those that lived there must have been so proud. I was impressed with the original features including the gingerbread on the porch and those beautiful cornices in the dining room and living room. It was painful to see it torn apart and then destroyed completely. I wanted to cry for the history that disappeared with it.

I showed this video to mum today. My Great Grandma lived in Lockley's & sold the house & parcel of land in the early 70's. My mum mentioned my grand father worked for the Fry's, this video brought back so many memories for her, keep up the good work.

Feel like, in an hours time, you have carried us back in time and back again to the sad present day and along the way, through your meticulous research, given us a solid glimpse into the lives of those who cherished this beautiful home. Thank you for allowing us to see beyond just bricks and mortar, to the story of lives lived, making it all much more meaningful and enduring long after the home is nothing more than a vacant lot. Through you, we see the shadows they leave behind, through the hallways they once walked, the meals once prepared and the dinners once served, the gardens once tended...have you ever considered teaching history? Your homes of what we call the 'Victorian era' in the states are laid out similarly, with the to front rooms off the entry, one being a 'receiving' room for temporary visitors, clergy and delivery personnel the other, the 'formal' drawing or living room. This room would be off of the dining room for the men to 'adjourn to' for a brandy/whiskey and or cigar after a meal with the women retreating to the 'receiving' room. All very proper in keeping with the custom of the day. This home appears to be a bit more 'upscale' than the heritage homes on the next block. Looks like the 'wannabes' won out in the end with the object of their envy back then, now on the 'chopping block'. A shame as always but thankfully you've given us another glimpse into Adelaide and Australia's past, Paul. Cheers, mate!

I wish we had someone like UI documenting these in the US. If anyone does know of an US equivalent of this channel, I'd love to see it. I follow Farm Hunter but he does not delve into the history like this and only does farm houses, sometimes something like a rural church or school. I haven't found any good American urbex channels other than Farm Hunter. Would love one like that here. I wish I had the means to do it but I don't. I can't even climb stairs so I sure can't do this type of exploring.

It broke my heart to see such a beautiful home torn down. I am so happy to see this documentation on such great craftsmanship, you just do not see that these days. Our home is a 1911 build and by buying it we saved it from being gutted and modernized to make an open plan house. I am truly heart sick to know such a beautiful building was allowed to be demolished. You can never get that back!

What a loss of a grand ole home. The details on the outside alone are so beautiful. The original wood floors! It hurts my heart to know it's all gone now. Made me cry when you gave Robert the pieces of his home.

You're a kind heart, it's a wonderful gesture to have taken a tile from the Henley Beach home and place it on the owner's grave. You're doing a wonderful thing with your channel - continued success with your channel and thank you for your valuable gems and nuggets uploaded.
I first watched your channel when you uploaded the Minot house in Blair Athol; I knew Elsie and Wally Minot back in the early to mid-1960s, I think the last time I saw Elsie may've been the early 1970s. They were a lovely elderly couple. I remember they had the walnut tree orchard directly alongside their little home, Wally used to love his walnut grove and he gave a sapling to my dad who planted Wally's tree in his backyard.
That sapling quickly grew and began to bear the juiciest, most delicious walnuts I've ever tasted. There's nothing quite like fresh walnuts straight off the tree. Elsie and Wally had a son who did maintain the house 'til his death. Their son had promised Wally he wouldn't sell their home and apparently, he did keep his promise. I was sad to see Elsie and Wally's partly demolished home.
You mentioned in that upload the backyard neighbour told you he thought the house haunted as he could hear piano music. I can't recall a piano in their home but perhaps at one time they may've had one. I can't say for sure - but - I'm sure neither Wally nor Elsie would've haunted. They were happy, kind people. Elsie bought little dolls for children in the neighbourhood from - I think Coles variety stores, little plastic old style cupie-dolls and dressed them in hand-sewn outfits. Then she'd give them to the neighbourhood kids.
Wally was very friendly - always up for a chat, his only failing he may've been a little too fond of a drink from time to time. Lovely people.
I don't recall the year but Wally suffered a stroke and was hospitalised for quite a time. Apparently, he did come home once following his stroke and recuperation, wanted to see his walnut grove again. I saw him being gently led around his orchard and remember thinking how suddenly old and frail he appeared.
He died not long after then a short time later Elsie followed.
It was emotional to see their home and I remembered so many things long forgotten (I wasn't close to my father), the only good thing about seeing my father all those years ago was I'd be able to see Uncle Wally and Aunty Elsie again. I loved them, thank you for uploading an update about their home.
I checked Google maps and notice how their street has very much changed - across the road from the Minot's was a lovely double-block residence that had its own tennis court on one block and towering white-gum trees in fact there were many old-growth trees in people's homes back then. Towering trees, flocks of sulphur-crested cockatoos - must've have been hundreds, would flock and roost in the limbs of the trees. Gone now ... time keeps on slipping into the future I suppose.

I am so happy you responded with these comments :-) It is amazing to think that someone who knew the occupants of a home in my video can recall and provide such vivid memories of the owners and their lives. I always hope I can find out more and more about the people who owned and lived in these beautiful old homes and this Walter and Elsie`s homes was one i grew very fond of and went back several times to take more photos and just admire the original condition they kept it in. :-) Your recollection of them was wonderful to read and i did imagine them to be very kind and loving just as you described them. Warren was the son and he passed away in 2019 and as you said only then was the home later sold so he did indeed keep his word to his Father :-) Vascoe I really appreciate you adding these comments and if you can elaborate on any more I would love to read :-) Would you be happy for me to recall these details if I do a follow up sometime on the old Mynott home I recorded as my viewers love to hear details like you have provided ? :-)

I consider the work you undertake as vital as so much of our history is lost to time and I suppose that's only natural - I mean, it's been the way of the world and our species' fate for a very long time now. I also recall their little car - it was green, only with front doors I think and window blinds with pom-poms along the bottom edging of each blind and a round, material covered ring-pull cord on each blind, too. I think it was a late 1940s, early 1950s Morris Minor. It really suited them and I'd happily anticipate their taking me along with them to Arndale Shopping Centre. Back then it was brand new - Arndale - very flash and modern. Elsie and Wally were truly gentle hearts. I believe children haven't yet lost their innate instinct to gravitate toward the good and sense light in others, a sense that sometimes may become somewhat dormant by the time we 'grow up'. I love Aunty Elsie and Uncle Wally, they were beautiful and 'though not blood I still admittedly only very occasionally, mourn their passing. But that's the wonderful thing about memories, they're forever alive in my heart 😄

It is just so sad that this house could not be preserved. This was the best explore ever. Very touching tribute with the tile and blue stone at Mr. Fry's resting spot. Bravo!
Developers should pay more attention to history and people's wishes rather than the money they can make by destroying such a beautiful piece of property. I'd love to find a place like that to move into.

It's such a pity that they don't recognize the money to be made in restoring them and selling them. But, I guess, they'd rather tear them down and put in a bunch of concrete boxes, er, I mean apartment buildings that they can charge outrageous rents for.

developers only care about money and they make more money tearing the place down and putting two to three homes where this one stood .

What a beautiful respectful tribute to a grand 1901 Villa, now gone. Such a sad waste that could have been restored. Thank you Paul that you were able to capture both the external and internal architecture of this characteristic emergence of Victorian and Federation home, before demolition. The facade with all its intercity should have been cherished and internally the ornate ceiling roses, high ceilings, wide skirtings and timber floorboards add to the charm of this old Adelaide Villa. Also, fascinating history about the Fry and Robertson families that once resided at the Villa. If only the walls could talk!

The same thing is happening in Western Australia. The developers are destroying beautiful old homes & putting up ugly new housing developments & high appartments blocks.
It sad there won’t be any historic places left for the next generations to enjoy, because of the developers being so greedy for money.😢

Wow! This is a real tearjerker for sure. I get so damned angry with the loss of all those beautiful homes that held so much history. Adelaide certainly needs to do more to retain its real history instead of letting 'modern developers' or 'out of country' developers destroy what's left. Thanks again for a most informative and interesting post. I used to travel past so many of those old beautiful places every day. Thank goodness that I don't live in Adelaide any more as it breaks my heart to see this. Keep up the great work and please keep up the history with it too. I wish you could go back and voice over the history of the other houses you filmed. Great work.

You did such an incredible job mapping the history of this beautiful home, that I feel I actually know the two families that resided under her roof. This was your best ever. I loved the history of the occupants as part of the fabric of the home. I felt so sad when it was demolished. It was still livable with some updating for 21st century technology.

This is a beauty in disquise!! what an elaberate living room with the stain glass doors. I don't like the fact that this one isn't protected under the Heritage act. Love the details , the crown molding and wood work. Thanks for the history and mystery of the family that once lived there.

Oh i cant believe they knocked it down i kept hoping someone would save it . Only two owners in 120 years that's rare.
