The underlying theme in these faux Muslim films is that the creators flat out think Islam is oppressive. They think every aspect of Islam symbolizes oppression so the toxic moral of the story is to get rid of it. You can't have sex? Oppression. You wear a scarf? Oppression. You can't drink alcohol? Oppression. Oh you can still be a Muslim and worship God, but you can't do any of the things He told you to do in your religion. It's like the film is saying "you live in the West now, you're free and can do what ever you want!" It's a very liberal understanding of religion where you believe in God but make none of the sacrifices and none of the commitments. It's so messed up because Islam is one of the last religion that still places God above the worldly desires. Because at its core there is a fundamental difference in beliefs. Do you live for this world or do you live for the next? Do you live for God or do you live for yourself? People have different opinions on this but in Islam the answer is objectively clear: you need live for God. So when you get a Westerner or even a "Muslim" who prioritizes themselves over God, of course you are going to get a terribly written Muslim character. How can you expect the character to be a good Muslim when the writer doesn't even understand Islam?
Beautifully worded. I honestly couldn’t have said it better. I agree 100% and until we stop having that mindset of Islam being oppressive, we will never get a well-written movie.
@aiyanash8027 Then those people dont understand and aren't committed to religion and shouldn't be in the business of making films and media about an already misrepresented religion then.
I guess we're (STILL) patiently waiting for a group of muslim creators' creativity to pop off and to get the opportunity to show these people how it's done insha allah... anyway😂 looking forward to the January "Iqra Trials" video🦋
"Bad representation is better than no representation" bitch nooooo I would rather no one knows me than knowing me as a bad person. I can't believe anyone would think like that especially when it comes to religion. Dumb just dumb. Loved this video and love you 💕
i would love the media to start getting your average muslim to start having more input in what they're presenting rather than pushing the same monotonous narrative of muslim women needing to be saved, especially when they confuse culture with religion because the struggles the character often faces are cultural issues but the director thinks throwing a hijab on her will add depth to the story! i would love to see a film that still explores the struggles of your average muslim woman but she overcomes this struggle independently. loved hearing your thoughts on it girl!

A lot of the messaging here had more to do with culture rather than religion. Islam played very little role in why the father acted the way he did but more to with the culture of Pakistan. Whether or not that culture is oppressive in nature, I won't get into, but I think a lot of watchers who are first generation children immigrants can relate to a lot of what Hala went through. I've never watched the movie, but based on what I’ve heard of it so far, I can already tell that it plays into Islamophobic tropes of Muslim-female oppression. And on top of that, she needs a non-Muslim WHITE MALE to come and liberate her, which endorses white supremacy. If the film had instead depicted a Muslim girl who was bullied at school for being Muslim, then I guarantee the film wouldn’t have been critically acclaimed because, in the Western audience’s eyes, Muslims are always the aggressors and never the victims.

This is specifically done to Brown and Black women, who cannot function with the Eurocentric ideal and harder to at times fetishize aside 'largeness.' And, if such 'largeness' cannot be ascribed, they are usually women in need of rehabilitation by other women, fair skinned or White, or by the equivalent of that by a White man.
