And like the USSR a large part of they supplies for the KMT came from the western allies.
This is a great depiction of how strong Chinese resistance was. Yes, they lost territory, but they never lost the ability to resist and keep fighting. That said, I'm curious about the internal politics of the KMT whenever Chiang decided to keep fighting. Were there people in the KMT government who would have settled for peace rather than a long war? In the UK there were some who were willing to sign a peace treaty with Germany after all. Internal politics are just as important as battlefield results.
Most of the KMT hign command were determined to resist, including Chiang himself, though he did took control of the CCP elite army under his command and kept a close eye on them. Those who were willing to sign peace with the japanese were mostly warlord leaders, such ad Yan Xishan and Tang Enbo, these figures seek to preserve their power during the conflict and fought passively and never achieve dominace within the chinese politics. In 1938 Wang Jingwei, Chiang`s main political rival within KMT, declared peace with the japanese after failed to convince Chiang to do so. He soon became the puppet ruler of Janpanese occupied China (Reorganized National Government), and thus is condemned as national traitor to this day.

All of China was united in resisting Japan, even ideological enemies like the KMT and CCP. It was a major turning point in the formation of modern Chinese identity. Sun Yat-Sen was more a socialist, so in the early days of KMT they are more left leaning in ideology. This is one reason why Soviet Union was an active supporter of KMT in early days. Many Indians, even those who fought with the British against the Japanese, considered the INA not to be collaborators, but fellow independence fighters who chose a wrong path, and protested when the British attempted to try INA leaders. The resulting fallout led to the British not considering the Indian Armed Forces to be that trustworthy anymore, and contributed to Britain leaving India in 1947.

Not really, it's not like Japan would conquer the entirety of Siberia, they would just stay by the coast and in a land war they would lose badly to the soviets
In 1941, Japan was running out of resources. It was in no shape to fight the Soviets. Their earlier attempt in 1939 already ended in failure.
@@alphagamer9505yeah but stalin sent his siberian divisions to defend moscow image if they weren’t there. Between june-december Russia lost 4 million men. This could of tipped the balance to far.
I never ever get bored when Kings& Generals around
Most channels would begin a documentary on the Pacific War at 1941, sometimes 1939, and maybe MAYBE at 1937. The earliest you would see it start is 1931. You guys began your documentary all the way back at 1471, worked your way through 400 years of European colonialism, and then began the documentary in earnest from 1851. This is history done right.
Truly one of the best channel for learning history on TH-cam. Thanks Kings and generals.
'Epic History TV' is another great channel if you want to check it out:)
@@FreeFallingAir Watch that too.

Love this content. My ten year old brother watches this series with me every Tuesday. Can't beat that. Keep up the great work.
That's fantastic man
I knew very little about 2nd sino-japanese war apart from rape of Nanking and the fact that it raged for almost 9 years and yet barely covered is shocking (unlike Pacific war). This is very insightful. Please do a video in future about CCPs rise to power in the mainland China. It would be really interesting.
What's more impressive is that the Chinese were able to put their political differences aside for the duration of the war against a unified enemy.
@Carl to hold on to leadership of whole china, chiang advocated self-war against the communists...
@@theawesomeman9821 Not exactly, the United Front collapsed in 1941, when the KMT started attacking CCP troops, and toward the end of the war, when Japan was getting its butt kicked in the Pacific, the Chinese didn't launch any offensives, even though it would've been the perfect time to do so. Instead, the KMT and CCP stockpiled arms and men to prepare for the conflict against each other.
@@angusyang5917 the Chinese still held back millions of Japanese who could have been fighting the Americans.
@@theawesomeman9821 I was referring to the political differences part, not the holding back Japanese soldiers back part, which definitely did happen. Thanks for your clarification, though.
I strongly recommend anyone interested in this video reading 'The Rape of Nanking'. What the Japanese did in Nanking is, and shouldn't be, overshadowed by German atrocities in Europe.
The author later committed suicide after receiving a lot of death threats from who I suspect are Japanese ultranationalists.
The amount of detail and production value in this series so far is simply astonishing. To think this is still a prelude is just insane and I'm so exited for the rest of the series!
Loving this series. Great to see some history exploring China’s experience in the war as it’s often overlooked.
Its not taught in western schools.

The scale and casualties of this war resembles the Eastern Front
Graphic is truly beautiful!
Fun-fact: More than 60% japanese troops deploy war at China, 10% war at Malaysia, Philippine, Singapore, Brunei, Burma , Vietnam, Indonesia. 15% at pacific war with US . 10% japan troop successfully conquer south east asia , while more than 60% troops can’t manage conquer China at the end
Yet most of the japanese resources were not sent to the war in china. the pacific war was far more resource intensive due to the needs of the navy and transportation.
Hard to conquer a land with a billion people that the government is more than willing to sacrifice to buy time (e.g. yellow river flooding sacrificing half a million of their civilians)
kinda like Germany in USSR.
@@corneliali7747 I'd agree. the USSR and china both got destroyed by germany/japan. but with large proportions of their forces required in northern and western europe and north africa for the germans and southeast asia and the pacific for the japanese they couldn't concentrate their resources to finish what they had started.
And like the USSR a large part of they supplies for the KMT came from the western allies.
@@HannarrMontannarr and both China and USSR leaders were willing to suffer very high casualties in wars of attrition.
This shaping up to be one of your best series!
One of the most interesting theatres of WW2, thanks for all your videos bro, really.
Politically high commands that’s with Chiang since the Northern expedition are determined all others are iffy.
Since they’re offered so many chances I think it’s evident.
chinese Wartime capital Chongking was originally a city under warlord control, when chiang lost his capital nanking, he had to flee to the city which was still under control of warlord just several years ago
From the First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese war, China got some knowlege about Japan's gambler inclination on decisive battle and quick resolution of wars.
the said "peace" is just to stall time... the kmt was a minority who saw the communists as threat to their leadership... only a DECISIVE BATTLE can put the country at peace, the VICTORIOUS would lead the overall china... whatever would be said, the VICTORIOUS IS TO LEAD CHINA... mao-ccp won... what is there more to say but that the victorious leadership are to reclaim the captured lands of china...

All of China was united in resisting Japan, even ideological enemies like the KMT and CCP. It was a major turning point in the formation of modern Chinese identity. After a century of humiliation, foreign rule and the fight for a fledgling republic, China collectively said “enough was enough” and decided to fight a very unequal fight to the very end. With US help they managed to win and liberate their country.
Unfortunately, the civil war resumed right after...

Tuesday and Saturday are my two favorite days of the week.
Tuesday: Pacific War week by week
Saturday: American Civil War week by week and World War Two week by week and Cold War.
But throughout that waring between the two parties they revered only one man
Sun Yat Sen
Sun Yat-Sen was more a socialist, so in the early days of KMT they are more left leaning in ideology. This is one reason why Soviet Union was an active supporter of KMT in early days. Also, CCP is essentially the left wing faction of KMT, Mao Zedon and Zhou En-Lai being KMT party member, until Chiang Kai-Shek decide to purge them in 1927 starting the civil war.
True that

Amazing to see the Sino-Japanese war covered in such detail, feel like it is often overlooked and most media focuses only on the American island-hopping campaign. Hope to see more of it!
Yeah. The Chinese did the bulk of the fighting against Japan, they deserve respect.
@@theawesomeman9821 thank you... sadly, praises on china make west leaders angry with china... to the extent that some commenter/s would make themselves sinners of truths...
Indeed, China tied down a lot of Japanese forces in their territory, resulting in less than optimal resources to defend against the U.S. invasion in the east.
Yes, there are few commentaries that properly explain that Chiang Kai-shek first started by attacking the Japanese in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai.
In this video, Chiang Kai-shek's declaration of invasion of Manchuria is omitted.
Chiang Kai-shek's invasion of Shanghai and his declaration of invasion of Manchuria was the beginning of the Japanese government's counterattack.

The raliway lines are awesome. Their inclusion in Hoi4 will be lit

Amazing content, thank you for this series. I would love to see a video on India during WWII, especially about the forces of Subhas Chandra Bose and his alliance with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. A fascinating yet overlooked portion of the Second World War and the movement for India's independence.
Interesting fact, the INA and Bose were not considered traitors by their fellow Indians.
