I think the strength of Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones for that matter, is that they were both session players. That gave them so much experience playing different styles of music and experimenting with different sounds and techniques.

The point is not to say whether Jimmy is better than others. He is simply incomparable. He is different, no other, no matter how good he is, has Jimmy's unique magic. Led Zeppelin is the only band I listen to every day, that is, I listen to Jimmy every day. Great reaction but too bad you didn’t hear the whole solo

75 Earls Court performance of Stairway is up there with the very best of the best - of the GOAT rock n roll band! It was a great tour - saw them at LI Colosseum in 75; St Patricks day Massacre. Find it on YT its a great performance and really good sound quality. Epic version of Stairway as well. Achilles Last Stand likely my 2nd favorite song/Zep song followed by Rock n Roll. Yeah Zep has 7 of my top 10 songs. Since I've Been Loving You, The Song Remains The Same, Kashmir, Whole Lotta Love - The Ocean too so make that 8 of 10! Gimmie Shelter and 25 or 6 to 4 other 2 on Top 10. Next 10 likely only 4 or 5 from LZ!

Not recognized as much as it should be is how easy Page made it look, especially considering his "state of mind" at the time, and the enthusiasm he displayed as he pouted, posed, danced around in the middle of another lightning-fast intricate lead that he wrote as he was playing it. Were there faster guitarists? Probably, but Page's inventiveness and creativity were second to none, and you could always tell how much fun he was having. If that weren't impressive enough, let's also not forget that he wrote the majority of the Led Zeppelin catalog, and produced it all.

Led Zeppelin played 3-nights at Madison Square Garden and one of those nights was the best live performance of this band ever. If you find the right night of 'Since I've Been Loving You' is worth a reaction. :) Otherwise, the live performance of 'In My Time of Dying' from their Earl's Court Concert is a better example of Jimmy's magic with a slide guitar. Studio? 'You Shook Me', 'How Many More Times' , and 'Dazed and Confused' from the first album titled 'Led Zeppelin' are worth a reaction.

Though I've heard many great Jazz, Country and Rock guitarists over the years, there was a " certain something " that distinguished Page from the rest: a kind of "Rock Star-swagger" that combines the energy of " out of control-slop " with the creative abandon required for great Hard Rock.

I was at secondary school in the UK when I first heard Led Zeppelin. It was probably 1970. I could not believe the music I was hearing. The impact of it is hard to describe at that time.
There were lots of very, very good lead guitarists around at that time, but somehow to me (and musical taste is a personal thing) Jimmy Page was just better than the rest.
You identified that he played with a freedom and even hit wrong notes from time to time. And I agree that is part of what made him great. IMHO he had a 'loose' style and didn't lose any sleep over hitting a wrong note. It was the overall picture that was important to him..
A friend once said to me that when he decorated a room, he wasn't too bothered if all the edges were perfect or everything else wasn't pristine. He said noone looks at that when they enter a room. All they see is the overall effect.
Anyway, regardless of what musical taste anyone has, I wish a Merry Christmas to all.

Saw them in 75 & 77. They were born for live shows. The first time it took me two songs to realize that's really Led Zeppelin! They project a real force from the stage. I have seen everyone back then and never felt that anywhere else. And Bonham is front and center in every song. Enjoyed the reaction.

    • @brolinofvandar
      @brolinofvandar ปีที่แล้ว +1

I saw them in 75 & 77 as well. My first ever concert, Feb 75 in St. Louis. Still to date the best show I've seen. 3-1/2 hours, no breaks, 3 encores. Worst seats I ever had (way up, slightly behind the stage backdrop, looking at Page's back, occasionally Plant, and Bonham through the backdrop), but best show ever.
Unfortunately, the 77 show was in Chicago and was the night they cancelled about 20-30 mins into it. Official story, Page was sick. Semi-official story, Page was strung out on heroin. Being there, I observed non-stop fireworks over the heads of the people on the floor (indoor arena), even as Plant begged them to stop. I observed the band get progressively more pissed off about it, and less involved in their performance. Last song, a roadie through a chair out behind Page, and he finished the song seated. Then, they took a "15 minute break", and never came back.
Thing about the Page sick/heroin stories, is I've heard from people at the other nights (around 4 total, I think) in Chicago that time, with all reports being outstanding. In other words, a normal night for them. The show I attended (2nd of the 4, but I'm not sure) was the only one affected. My opinion, the crowd and the fireworks may have not been THE reason, but I'm pretty sure it was a contributing factor.
So, which shows did you see in 75 & 77?

    • @Cashcrop54

@@Cashcrop54 My one consolation is the show is actually documented in the books, like Hammer Of the Gods. So, "I was there" for an event worth a specific mention. I'd rather have the show, but I got a "story"...
The Chicago show was better seats than the St. Louis show, but still off the side of the stage. I did finally see Page play from the front, in the 80's in Jax, FL with the Firm. Great show, all members of the band had great solos.
Jax was a great place for a concert. General admission, and you could show up five minutes before the show, walk right down, front and center and pick your spot in the near empty venue. Then turn around five minutes into the show and see a packed crowd. Everyone showed up at the last minute. Made it easy to get your optimum position for the show.

Just a little anecdote about Zeppelin - I attended The Bath and West Jazz and Blues festival near Shepton Mallet back in 1969 (sorry if I got the name wrong). This was the precursor to the Glastonbury music festivals. And - here I saw Zeppelin for the first and only time live. But my pal, Wayne Lancaster, feeling that Zeppelin had 'sold out', refused to listen and buried himself in his sleeping bag. It was a great festival over three days, I think. Floyd were there along with Santana, Canned Heat - and - many other 'greats'. Donovan gave an hour and a half session in the sunshine to fill in because a band had failed to arrive. I remember the clouds.

I was lucky enough to see Zep live 9 times. Then I saw Pagey solo, and with The Firm. They were all about the groove and the swing. It is such an amazing thing to play with musicians who allow one-another this freedom. To interact with one-another in the moment and chase the dream together. Having a great drummer, first and foremost, is the bedrock cornerstone of any great band (if you don't have a GREAT drummer, just forget about it). Having a mature and wise rhythm section that can groove and swing with that drummer is next on the list. A keyboardist who understands and fully grasps dynamic arrangement is next. As a guitarist/composer, I can't tell you how many times having this type of musician with me has taken my compositions to an entirely higher level. And it is just so much exciting fun when you are all deep in it together! A roller-coaster adventure through the universe on the knife's edge. Your next stop on your video adventure here is Jeff Beck's live version (Ronnie Scott's) of "Where Were You?"

I think that the essence of Page was in driving the narrative of the song. Not much room left for brilliant solo work yet he managed it sometimes. He had a few memorable solo moments but Led Zeppelin shined the brightest as a Whole.

This is the most extraordinary music I listened to as a young kid. Music, rock music, guitar playing reached a place with Jimmy Page that I’m not so sure has been achieved by anyone else. Others were great at what they did, but maybe their styles weren’t as expansive as Page’s. Just look at everything that happened in this piece of Dazed And Confused.

Been into Zep since a kid in the 70's. Always brings goosebumps. Glad to see others enjoying it. If anyone hasn't heard of 'Mr. Jimmy', he's probably one of the few who've managed to nail Page's unique techniques. Watch him here play "The Song Remains The Same" on double neck. (same concert). Especially note the hybrid picking Page used extensively. Imagine playing this live and jigging on the stage! th-cam.com/video/bhdj9CDTj6M/w-d-xo.html

I saw Zeppelin in 73, 75, and on two consecutive nights in 1977 when they played six nights at the forum here in L.A. As far as I'm concerned they are simply the best band I have ever seen. The second best band would be Rush.

I am a HUGE Jimmy Page fan, but if you've never spotlighted Led Zeppelin as a band, focusing on solos (a chunk of song interlude from a live song, essentially) really has you missing the forest by looking a one individual tree (i.e. you have no context). Check out "When the Levee Breaks," "Immigrant Song," and "Kashmir" for some Led Zeppelin context, then the solos will be impressive as their own thing. Their music isn't about solos or having 3 master musicians playing with the best front man of the 70s (Robert Plant). The sum is greater than ANY of their individual parts.

  • @PaulMcCaffreyfmac

I read an interview with Page in the '60s where he said he had to play every day because he wasn't a "natural guitarist".
You can certainly hear how sloppy he is but he is also something that few modern rock guitar players and almost no metal players are. He is an improviser and happy to go off on tangents just to see where it takes him. Though I saw them three times by the time Led Zep II came out and loved them then I was not so much a fan by the time of this video. I still fully admire his adventurousness though
Aah! You've just started talking about him exploring. That's what he does.

I have attended 300+ concerts and seen most of the classic rock bands in their prime. Led Zeppelin remains the greatest live band I have ever seen - better than Floyd, the Stones, The Who, Black Sabbath with Ozzy, Van Halen, Rush, Aerosmith, Clapton, Jethro Tull, Yes (although Yes in their prime was outstanding)...all of them. Zep was the best.

It’s really hard to pick the “best guitarist”. Page is certainly up in the modern rock/pop era. But take a guy like Danny Gaton. Few could touch him. Or Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt. So many styles.

Jimmy pages style stems from being a great session player in his early days. He was in a few bands after his sessions day's but the man new from the start with Led Zeppelin were he was taking the band and the shear overall talents of each musician in the band that had mastered there own instruments made it easy and very comfortable for page to play the way he did. Zeppelin is and will never be touched as being the only assembly of great musicians to ever work together. To this day they continue to hold the world record for the most people to EVER attend any type musical concert. And they did it without social media or tv! Word of mouth!

Not the best guitarist from a technical point of view, but certainly one of the greatest composers in rock. "Songwriter" is too small a word for what Jimmy Page did .. he was a composer, arranger, producer and architect of the entire soundscape of Zeppelin.
He was a great improviser during solo sections and phenomenal at setting moods. This solo is an excerpt from a looong solo section in "Dazed & Confused" one of the large set-pieces of any Zeppelin concert up until 1975. In this section we can hear the band (Robert Plant) improvising a bit of Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco" into the Jimmy Page solo ... creating a truly eerie effect juxtaposing the subject matter of the hippie anthem with the subject matter of Dazed & Confused.
Perhaps a bad ACID trip combined with insanity.
Cool to see the younger generation reacting to grandpas music. Cheers man! 🍺

Page played lead. And rhythm. And lead-rhythm. And rhythm-lead. And acoustic. He was above all great all-round guitarist (and producer obviously). And he was exciting rather than just technically good. If you want smooth, listen to Clapton (yawn!). The other thing to remember is that, subject to guest vocals on one track, Zeppelin was just the four of them. Forget these bands which have two extra guitarists, three keyboard players, two drummers and a choir of backing vocalists!
