The car left under the W-A Hotel is definitely NOT the FDR car. It is a baggage/mail car without doors wide enough to support an automobile's egress. If you notice Daniel, your tour guide, states "A train car....." not THIS train car which is clearly not for an automobile. FDR's POTUS car was the Ferdinand Magellan that Truman and Eisenhower also used.

Really nicely done video, well shot, and very interesting and fun to watch. I noted one factual error, however; the railroad car shown is not FDR's personal rail car, nor his Limousine transport rail car. First, FDR used a 1939 twelve-cylinder engine, four-door convertible originally built by Lincoln, and was specifically modified for the President by a speciality coach builder, Brunn & Company, Inc., in Buffalo, New York. Second, FDR was also known to have ridden in AL Capone's confiscated armored Cadillac, and a Packard Limousine. There is no record of FDR having used a Pierce Arrow Limousine during WW2. The derelict rail car shown is just a common baggage car, probably used by guests at the hotel during the era, or more imaginatively it may have been used to secretly haul gold to the New York Federal Reserve after FDR outlawed the private ownership of gold during the Depression. For the record, it is geometrically impossible to side-load an 18 ft long Limousine through the small doors of the rail car shown. Railroads have always used specially designed auto-carrier rail cars that are loaded via ramps from the ends. (Google auto-transport rail car for pictures.) As President, FDR had his own personal, private rail car, designed for his comfort and personal needs as a polio patient. There is no way his protective service would have permitted him to be driven into a sealed, dark rail car and transported to New York, under any circumstances. Finally, FDR's leg braces and wheel chair were not so heavy they required a specially designed rail car during the war or at any other time. That aside, the tour is fascinating, and certainly worth taking and your video was excellent. The guide, however, is repeating an old urban legend for dramatic effect and entertainment purposes. He is sincere and enthusiastic, but incorrect.

When you say that the converters powered the Metro-North Railroad, do you mean the New York Central railroad? That was the railroad that ran trains into Grand Central before Metro-North was created.

The current issue of Railroad Model Craftsman has a model similar to FDR personnel railroad car with the collapsible doors on the end for vehicle removal. Plus, you can checkout the lounge chairs, kitchen area, berths & multiple toilets. It's quite spiffy.... Plus, do checkout the well stocked pantry. If you ever visit New Orleans. Do drop by the train station as there are sometimes some of these old Pullman private rail cars as they get around via Amtrak.

  • @Ham549

This is complete and utter bullshit. The very reason a rotary converter exist it's because DC current can't travel very far. If this place I've been sabotage it would have shut down a few miles of tracks but not the whole Railroad. That is also a standard baggage car the platform it's at was built long before anyone even knew who FDR was.

      You're absolutely right, Stephen.
Funny thing with that bigger camera, it's more of a hassle to lug around, and because of that, for quite a few of my videos I use my tiny RX100 pocket camera. The best camera is the one you have with you.

I have a few more I've been trying to finish first, and actually, I spent so much time trying to focus on our host that now I need to go back and actually film more B-roll of the main terminal sights themselves. :) Expect to see my video some time soon.

What?!?!? I know this post is a year old, but say whaaaa? Tell me you know about City Hall Station and how the 6 train loops it at least?
Btw spoiler alert: the train located under GCT is not FDR's, or in anyway even related to him. It's just a random baggage car from the era. MTA just for one reason or another totally fabricated that story of it being used to transport FDR's Rolls Royce. Maybe it's to sell tours who knows. The station did play an important role during both world wars however.

The equipment isn't as important as the end results. I tell people that all the time even though I will generally be using either 3k or 5k worth of camera equipment to shot a sporting event. It just depends on how far away I will be from the action. More important is the location. Yours are generally first rate. Please continue keeping the toilet shots at a minimum.
