Thank-you for your skill and effort at teaching us "how it's done"; building that is, instead of buying plastic. In many instances, it's not that we're lacking initiative; rather, with stagnant salaries and retirement stipends versus higher cost of living, yet, our desire, nonetheless, to feed, neuter, vaccinate and shelter the strays and ferals, give a little boost to the foraging mama and baby critter, and/or to rescue those factory farmed, using plastic allows our buying that extra 30-50 lb. bag of good quality feed---hence, sleeping a little easier at night. However, I both appreciated and enjoyed your sense of humor and reassurance, as well, that when possible, the time and effort spent building (hopefully, with that recycled) and finishing with one's own hands, being, at once, both calming and invigorating, and yes, (at risk of over-thinking it all) even spiritually reaffirming. Got it!
I built my feeder with all the same features as yours just to different dimensions. Works perfect! No waste at all and another great benefit that I don't believe was mentioned is that it keeps most wild birds from getting to it as well. I built another one for my father because his coop has chain link surrounding it and it allows many wild birds to enter. With that many birds getting in, he was out of a 40lb bag of feed in just a couple days. Not any more. Thank you Stan for the great idea!
StriveFor Selflessness, I was wondering the same. It seems those chicken-wire runs let in all kinds of animals thta are not chickens. Like mice; they fit through a hole the size of a dime! Also, snakes. Snakes are fond of eggs... tho i watched a very funny video of a chicken running around with the snake she caught in her --mouth-- er, beak. The other biddies were chasing her trying to get it. I'm going to look at more of his videos to see if that fence is as short as it appears. Raptors are a problem where i live, a chicken run has to be fenced on four sides and top and even the bottom (under several inches of soil) to keep predators O-U-T!
I built a similar one years ago. Very handy. One suggestion, take a 1/4" piece of plywood and cut it to fit the inside length of the feeder. Angle it from halfway at the back of the feeder down to the floor just behind your L bracket. This will keep the feed sliding forward into the feeding area and will eliminate the pockets at the back of the feeder where the feed would just sit and eventually go bad.
+Brad Ley As a content creator I try to build projects to the audience that they will appeal to. Those who keep chickens are not necessarily woodworkers. When you start talking about angling this and using different thicknesses of wood that, people give up quick. That is why I did not include what you are talking about in this project. It works just fine as is. No problem with feed being available even when the feeder is low. I put that aspect in a rabbit feeder video I did previously and some people felt it was a good project but didn't want to mess with that angle piece inside. I built a couple more rabbit feeders without it and indeed it was not needed which is why I did not include it in this build.
We made this feeder and love it! We made it longer and skinnier with minor adjustments to the plans, then put the feeder portion thru the wall of the coop, so the box we fill is outside the coop under the awning. With limited space inside my coop this was perfect! We love it! Couldn't have done it without these plans and instructions! Thank you!!!!
I have been looking for something that will work for us here in Montana.. I plan on making one to put in our Green House so the chickens can run free during winter.. Thank you again...
Is the bottom of the feed angled so all the food is dispersed to the opening? If not then wouldn't some food never be eaten since it's too far back and since the bottom isn't angled it would never reach the opening?
Dear Petrichor, for those of us dealing with feeder secured to tree or post, obviously, tilting's being not an option, so. I may have to consider the slanting of bottom edge as well. Blessings.
How does this go with Rats or Mice? I have a Metal one but will improve and try to make Yours! I think it is just better but my Ladies are few 3 only and retired but give me p;easure in Australia. The food is the best and animal friends keep me happy. I am 82y young!

great design, I was thinking of using a trash can/PVC type but this will fit better in my coop. Only thing I would add is angled boards inside to direct the feed to the bottom.
Trent, he didn't use plywood, that would be the worst type board you could possibly use on an outside feeder like this. he used solid board, likes like maybe 1/2 inch. Plywood will start to come apart in a few months being out.
Just found you're channel and I think it is awesome. You put a lot of effort into your builds and you have an awesome setup. Probably one of the best Carpenter/TH-camrs out there. You have earned my subscription. Keep it up.
Suggested improvement on design: put a slope on the bottom so all the grain falls to the front so you don't get stale grain at the back where the chicken can't get to it : )

Barry Roberts It is an old Black and Decker Firestorm brad nailer. Long since discontinued. It has been relegated to small projects like this cause my B&D batteries are old. I'm not bringing anymore of that brand into my shop so once the batteries die this tool will die with them. It's about 10 yrs old.

That's what I worry about all these cordless/battery tools, too. At some point, the charge will not hold well, and if batteries aren't being made anymore, I'll have to consider getting new tools. It's a similar problem right now with one of my tablets. Functionally, it's still good, screen is responsive. But because there isn't a replacement battery anymore, I either have to keep buying old batteries, hoping they're better than what I have, or I will have to give up on the tablet at some point when the charge is ridiculously short.
Per Shop: Nothing to do with chicken feeders, but I too have the same problem with tablets. iPad died, no batteries available to replace (except after-market, and those can be sketchy). I replaced ipad with samsung tab s2, i think it was the last in captivity. By the time i thought about batteries (still fine so far), they were unavailable. My new rule of thumb: each new tablet or phone (even house phones) I will purchase new batteries right away, to avoid the problem. You reminded me I should probably get some extra batts for my drill asap. Thanks for that!

Yeah it is... I always have to make multiple tests for thickness of wood and for the size of the screws. Too complex. And I haven't found a good video that shows how to set up for different thickness

Michael Olson, *Just get 'em!* Someone will have to complain for it to be a problem. Before that happens, bring a gift of half dozen fresh eggs to them, butter 'em up a bit. Of course you do need a yard, and coop can't be closer than 60ft from any abode (rules of my district). You should start with a couple hens or three, and make your set-up as unobtrusive as possible. Another comment said to get a group of neighbors together, i second that. Oh, and NO ROOSTERS!!! (you dont need roosters to get eggs) AND DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!!!
I've seen some great videos on TH-cam about Nest box I especially like the one made from milk crates... Go check it out it shouldn't be too hard to find
I built one for my coop and everything works perfect until rats and squirrels started to chew open holes and got inside of the feeder. Eventually I had to line the box with tin to rodent proof your invention.
Just added 4 new pullets and man they waste food!! I am scraping it up and putting it back in the feeder every day. Using crumbles it just is a total waste if you don't have some way to stop them tossing it all out on the ground. Love my hens, but got to be the dumbest ill mannered eaters I have encountered on any farm. I plan to build me this, and add some sloped pieces inside to direct the feed to the front.. GJ man

Joe basementwoodworking Yep got lazy. Most of it came from a prefabbed glued panel. The lid, L shaped piece and feeder inlet were scrapes from my bin. A 16" x 96" panel was on sale for $16. Couldn't beat it.

Top Gaff Backyard, I would think if you used a mild bleach solution When Cleaning Your Chicken Feeder, you would find it isn't a problem. Dry it in the sun, away from the Chooks, because mould doesnt like sunshine. For that matter, place it in a site with as much direct sun, and breeze, as possible. I think a few vent holes might aid in keeping moisture at bay as well.
Cute, but you dont need the pocket holes. Waste proof when you get a auto lid to keep the rats out. Put a piece of tin roof over it all. Mold in feed is the worst

+Ana Hg Really? Dang where were you 15 yrs ago when I built my first chicken feeder made of wood that lasted long after a plastic one had deteriorated due to the sun. Wish I would've known. Perhaps their is another reason. You don't really specify in your comment.
Wood lasts longer than people think but it also depends on climate conditions and where it is located. For example, I had a pallet frame that I use on the ground. After about 1 year, the parts touching the ground look all gross and mildewy, definitely structurally weak. But the parts that are not touching the ground and still in good and sound shape. Similarly, a pallet that I turned into an outdoor table for plants and working on plants, by adding 4 2x4s as legs, are still doing fine after several years. The boards are still good and the legs are great. No paint or treatment was added. Like Stan said in an earlier comment, the conditions for mildew and other problem is not just because of wood being outdoors. It's because of having conditions that mildew likes to grow in.

When the feeder gets low just tip feeder towards feeding opening, then refill.

you should put a ~45 degree slant in the bottom of the bin so that all the feed ends up in reach.

Are those glue-up boards? Will they last in the weather?

Too much expense and trouble just use PVC pipe and hang it from abouve so its off the ground.
I think I'll scale this down to 1/3 size and try it for my Quail - they're notorious food wasters.

I will not suggest this feeder for outdoors.
+Ana Hg Really? Dang where were you 15 yrs ago when I built my first chicken feeder made of wood that lasted long after a plastic one had deteriorated due to the sun. Wish I would've known. Perhaps their is another reason. You don't really specify in your comment.
Wood lasts longer than people think but it also depends on climate conditions and where it is located. For example, I had a pallet frame that I use on the ground. After about 1 year, the parts touching the ground look all gross and mildewy, definitely structurally weak. But the parts that are not touching the ground and still in good and sound shape. Similarly, a pallet that I turned into an outdoor table for plants and working on plants, by adding 4 2x4s as legs, are still doing fine after several years. The boards are still good and the legs are great. No paint or treatment was added. Like Stan said in an earlier comment, the conditions for mildew and other problem is not just because of wood being outdoors. It's because of having conditions that mildew likes to grow in.

Where is the magic in this feeder? I can't see any benefits comparing to ordinary bunker feeder.
Khalistan zindabad 4” PVC is much better and simple than this idea.
