Really enjoy your videos and thanks for taking us along on the ride (or at least the start). Use to restore old Japanese scooters and most were no starts. I love seeing you go thru the steps... warts and all it's real mechanics. Step-by-step diagnose and elimination along the way to the sweet sound of startup. Thanks for being real.
I might still have some engine parts for that motor, I'll have to look in my shop. If there is and you need them there yours. I know I had a distributor, a few carbs, and other parts for that year motor. I used to work at a golf course and bought one of their old cushmans and 2 motors. Cushman is no longer here and the guy that bought it didn't want all the extra parts for it. I'll get back with you if I find anything.
Musti1 has the cooles Subscribers ever! Thak you Sir and everyone that give parts &stuff so that he can go on with interresting projects! Its one of my dearest go to channel to zoom out. (Corona Zen ) Jan.2021
So I've been watching the build on this and came back to the beginning to see how it all started. As you were doing to the tour of the rear end and trans I had an idea for you. The snow blower tires with the portal axle type system of the VW bus. More ground clearance for playing in the snow during winter. Just a goofy idea
Watching you struggle with the Cushman ignition saddens me. Over here in UK we would ask a Scouser to start it and it would be done in 3 seconds flat! They can open any door or start any vehicle instantly.
Love the way you explain your thought process as you're explaining what you're doing. I would have never thought of jumping to the solenoid but that's brilliant!
Very much enjoy your channel.I'm always amazed how you bring back to life, repurpose something that has sat and,had been basically abandoned for decades.
What a surprise! Mustie got it running. Ha! I wouldn't have believed him if he said he couldn't. Nice on. Really unusual vehicle. I haven't seen one of those in 50+ years. My cousin had a Cushman Mailster. It was fun, but very tip-endagered. Fast curves are a no no! Looking forward to see what you do with it. Thanks.
that's the beauty of old wheels. Unless there is major engine damage, all it takes is spark, fuel and timing and any motor of the era will run. No computers, no microchips, fancy sensors, or other crap to keep it from going.
Only watched two of your videos and can already tell you are like me. Love getting engines out of scrap yards or people give up on. Also that once you start a project you can’t stop thinking about how to fix them! It takes me forever at times to go to sleep because I can’t stop thinking about what I can do to get the motor running. 😂 nice to see I’m not the only one.
Hey Mustie1, I hope Ur happy with the deal!!! The carb is a little interesting, I look forward to watching Ur rebuild... Will have to see if U find the secret compartment and when U do, don't loose the little plastic plug or ball bearing in it....
Just awesome. Love the fact you take us along for the diagnostics. I can't imagine going 45mph in it though! Love the delicate surgery of the lock. Looks like all the cars around you will be safe from being stolen :-)
Turned over. Found & repaired points. Gave it oiled gas. Shot decent amps at it. *SUCCESS !* I would now add 1 pint of Marvel to oil, 1 pint to a gallon of high octane gas, a dose of "lead substitute", and let it idle @800 RPM till empty. That will burn off any moisture, hone and glaze the cylinders, and make it easier to work on. I know you know all this- I'm just talkin.
Back in the 60's my dad worked for the post office and they used these Cushman's with an enclosed box on the rear to deliver mail. Well, they had an action and my dad brought one home. We tinkered with it and got it running great but with fewer problems than this guy had. Anyway's, all 4 of us boys would get in the back of that box while my dad would drive it down to the meat market and people would just stare when one of us came out of the back then another one of us, then another one of us, and the last one of us. They couldn't figure out how we all fit into the back of that little three-wheeled mail truck. We had a ball with it and so much fun. Hell, it would pull wheelies. Our dad, later on, sold it to a guy that made an Ice Cream truck out of it lol. Hope he had as much fun as we did. So many cool things and cars when we were kids but not anymore. Those good times are all gone now.
That was fun! It seems to run well, for it's age. Hopefully the wiring nightmare won't be too much trouble. I like the garage sale runner vehicle idea. Park wherever and nobody questions it. Keep being great Darren. Awesome stuff. Chuck in Kansas
Another awesome project you get to work on all kinds of knackered vehicles, engines of some sort and you bring them back to life, I wish I had mechanical skills like that as I like tinkering with stuff. I liked the old frame bike you had and put the 4 stroke engine on it looked awesome, I have a mountain bike and would like to put a 50cc engine on it but here in England the minimum you can have is a 250w motor any higher is classed as a motorcycle that requires tax, insurance, licence ect would be a good project but could work out expensive keep up with these projects 👍
Place I used to work had several of these, except ours were four wheel.Ours had a very low speed rear end, they were geared as work scooters. As I recall the burden scooters we had were geared 10-1 in the rear end,The meter maid type you have there has a 6-1 rear end.Transmission, engine the same.We changed rear ends on one scooter to the meter maid rear, running 5-70x8 4 ply trailer type tires. One of the hi ranking supervisors drove the scooter about five minutes threw a fit made us change it back to the low speed rear end.Probably almost identical to the one you have because this all happened back around 1979-1982 time frame.
Good deal the points weren't behind the flywheel. That had to run intermittently crappy for the last owner where the points plastic insulator /connection was loose. Gonna be neat to see where you go with this one. Thought I'd add this too. On my Cushman I drilled the wheel flanges/hubs so I could mount them snowmobile trailer tires to it. Stock them are kinda an odd bolt pattern.
those little trucks are awesome. i just traded one off cause i needed a tractor and a guy had a 8N ford he was willing to swap. loved that little truck though
Looks like a great putter to have if we get hit by a solar storm or EMP. Very simple, great for local grocery or parts transport. Reminds me of an old Harley SERVICAR trike. Thanks J K
Back in the mid 80's at NAS Norfolk, we used a Cushman on the flight line to run from the hanger out to our aircraft spots. Those things took a hell of a lot of abuse and always started!
Looking and sounding good, if the brake master cylinder is shot it can be replaced with a Clark fork lift one. I can't remember the bore off the top of my head.
I do a lot of work on OMC outboards. Knew they had the lawn boy lawnmowers but I don't know anything about Cushman or that they had an OMC motor in them. Maybe OMC bought Cushman at some point? I'll have to Google this and learn more. Of course Johnson and Evinrude made opposed cylinder outboard motors way back in the day. I had no idea they were making an opposed motor in 1978. Thanks again for a lesson on old motors :-)
Mustie1 weird. I looked it up and it looks for all the world like a worm gear. It's a pretty low ratio so maybe the gear can drive the worm in this case
Over my lifetime have seen these Cushmams worked on and I have driven quite a few of them as well. They can fly down the road! That company later on got rid of those motors and went to Kolers
Got a kick out of how many times you tried to stop the vid but had to keep going back. The thing actually sounded pretty good at times. I'm looking forward to hearing it when you do your magic on the carb. Someone would love to have that to run around their little plot of ground. If it wasn't so heavy it's make a great golf car. Once again, thx for the vid.
love it, the county gave these to security at fair grounds years ago and some in use still , a buddy of mine in charge of security at fair grounds was hunting parts and told him I has a few, he came out and I gave him what I had ! only saved them due to be hard to get !! love thise old Cushman products.
awesome-love all the strange vehicles. Like a mechanic on a different planet-maybe greenscreen a Martian junkyard? Or just show your driveway-ppretty much the same.
Initial thoughts: add some right and left casters to the front for going over 45 mph. 8-) To get past 45 mph put in a VW motor and transmission. hotted up as necessary to at least double the Cushman motor's power. 8-)) No matter what, have fun!
*Always wanted to see if that will run!!* Every time i seen it on his channel i always wanted to see it up close and see if it would run! Looks like it has a good engine!
I picked up one a while back wasn't police didn't have cab but basically the same but mine had a 3 speed trans with two speed rear end.. the front wheel steers on them basically sideways you can almost make a zero turn turn, mine had an issue with the mechanical fuel pump I just added an electric one ...... the one I had sat outside uncovered for over 10 years I added some fresh fuel and a battery and it fired right up
Woah, so that's what these are. There has been one for sale near me for a month now. Just a white one, haven't gotten close but everything externally looked to be there.
the yellow honda model sold in britain was called the c90 they had a full legshield that covered everything up some were also called the cub because they were 70cc
Thank you mustie1. I never knew how a coil actually worked I didn't know it worked off a ground. Hey mustie1 would you please do a reviews on the different jumper packs you bought over the years and which one you found to be the best? I'm in the market to buy one but I have no idea where to look or what to buy? I'd like to buy something pretty heavy duty. And could a guy make his own jumper pack on a like a little two wheeler? what's inside of a jumper pack also?
Looking forward to see this moving under it's own steam as never seen one before, well nothing like this in NZ anyway. Be interesting to see what plans you have for it also. All the best
that thing is just neat!! that'll be cool to run around in 👍..As for the moped could you put a little 4 wheeler like a 50? kind of looks similar...anyway great job as always fun video
From what I've seen, they don't make a motor that Mustie can't coax back to life.
H
Josh F unless there is a hole out the side of the block, that is true
nah mate, JB-weld the hole and it's fine

Hanlon Greg second that

Can i Buy parts for it online i just bought. One does anyones knows thanks...
Success! I always get a charge when an old motor comes back to life after sitting for an extended period of time. Great video Darrin!
So I've been watching the build on this and came back to the beginning to see how it all started. As you were doing to the tour of the rear end and trans I had an idea for you. The snow blower tires with the portal axle type system of the VW bus. More ground clearance for playing in the snow during winter. Just a goofy idea
The bike in your truck looks just like my first bike when I was 12 years old a Honda trail 90. What a great machine.
Watching you struggle with the Cushman ignition saddens me. Over here in UK we would ask a Scouser to start it and it would be done in 3 seconds flat! They can open any door or start any vehicle instantly.
Well, he's in the US and don't have access to Scouser.
Michael Mace Sure you can mail order them
Geez!, wouldn't I like to have that. What a great way to tool around, could even take mom shopping. Darren you are one smart man.
Love the way you explain your thought process as you're explaining what you're doing.
I would have never thought of jumping to the solenoid but that's brilliant!
2:12. Weight limits are probably too low for the average officer these days lol.
That sound brought back memories! I used a Cushman 4 wheel flatbed scooter at the amusement park I used to work at for 25 years!
Very much enjoy your channel.I'm always amazed how you bring back to life, repurpose something that has sat and,had been basically abandoned for decades.

So I'm starting to think you can make just about ANYTHING run! :>) Nice job, Mustie!
Engines arent that complicated. Generally if it turns over, you can get it to run with a little work :)
@@Koshunae Yep. Like childbirth... but still ....lol
Bea . . . LOL
get tires and a gas tank I wanna see more
ed the mower man I 2nd that!! :D
third!
ill 4th that weres it at buddy those things are cool
Bet Harvey is glad to hear that beast run Darrin , She does sound good man ! Thumbs up ..
It’s alive!
that's the beauty of old wheels. Unless there is major engine damage, all it takes is spark, fuel and timing and any motor of the era will run. No computers, no microchips, fancy sensors, or other crap to keep it from going.

all I can think of is the Frankenstein movie its ALIVE ITS ALIVE just amazing
Yup,sounds like half a volkswagon..HUM..what about a mini V.W project! A mini Crusty!
Hey Mustie1, I hope Ur happy with the deal!!! The carb is a little interesting, I look forward to watching Ur rebuild... Will have to see if U find the secret compartment and when U do, don't loose the little plastic plug or ball bearing in it....

I'm amazed that front tire held any air at all
"different powerplant" i hope that means something with double the hp!

Good deal! I love the videos. With all the jumper leads, sparks flying and fuel running out of the carb I was just waiting on a fire. Glad it went ok.
Nice job as ever Mustie1.............love the old hondo 90.............3 speed centrifugal clutch, cushman great
I am constantly amazed at your ability to franken-cobble just to try getting something to start.
Am I the only one that is in love with this rig!? Great videos man! You're good
That was fun! It seems to run well, for it's age. Hopefully the wiring nightmare won't be too much trouble. I like the garage sale runner vehicle idea. Park wherever and nobody questions it. Keep being great Darren. Awesome stuff. Chuck in Kansas

Two words: Rust Bucket.
Nice find. Definitely a cool vehicle.
You are good with the electrical ignition, a true DC electrician . good video.
Old school knowledge, basics, great, love it.!! Great, showing the think through it atitude.
Good deal the points weren't behind the flywheel. That had to run intermittently crappy for the last owner where the points plastic insulator /connection was loose. Big trunk makes it a great local rummage hauler. Patina is nice. Crome outside exhaust would be nice. Go get it Teach...
those little trucks are awesome. i just traded one off cause i needed a tractor and a guy had a 8N ford he was willing to swap. loved that little truck though
"The hoard pays off". You need that on a sign over your garage door. Great job!
haha popping that trunk was pretty funny Free c90 springer forks SCORES!
That cart came from down the road from me in poughkeepsie!!! mustie, we gotta be close! Cushmans are the best!
You're a genius figuring out all these problems on small engines.
How much for sunthin. Great as always my man !!!!
Just found your channel really like the how you explain things and show them.
Like The Beard Mustie!! very distinguished ... Love your videos, the PUCH moped particularly good... I'm easily please... x

With the input up high my guess is that differential is a worm gear
but it still rolls
Mustie1 weird. I looked it up and it looks for all the world like a worm gear. It's a pretty low ratio so maybe the gear can drive the worm in this case
My mini jeep has a worm drive gearbox from an old snowblower and it rolls fine.
Beyond a certain gear angle and ratio a worm drive backdrives just fine.
I can't believe how quite that thing ran considering the muffler was toast.
Over my lifetime have seen these Cushmams worked on and I have driven quite a few of them as well. They can fly down the road! That company later on got rid of those motors and went to Kolers
That lock gave you too much trouble Mate, must be outta practice eh!! You're embarrassing us!! Where's that friggen Slidehammer!!☺
So looking forward to the rest of this project should be classic mustie !!
" IT'S ALIVE !!! " - 3 Thumbs up, thought you were going to leave us hanging. It runs pretty good. Thanks fer the video....
Got a kick out of how many times you tried to stop the vid but had to keep going back. The thing actually sounded pretty good at times. Liked how it bothered you to where you were determined to get it started

Now that's a cool vehicle!:-)..something to drive to the shop with in the summer..
that is amazing ...that engine runs..... excellent video .....excellent effort into getting it going.....
Interesting the dual coil ignition. With no distributor rotor in the cap, must be firing both plugs on power and exhaust.
Yep, just like a Harley.
"Wasted spark ignition" . "total loss was an old oiling system.
This thing is SO COOL! I would dig the hell out of it :)
Pretty sure advance auto parts sells that same ignition switch for like $5
awesome-love all the strange vehicles. Like a mechanic on a different planet-maybe greenscreen a Martian junkyard? Or just show your driveway-ppretty much the same.
MAN is there anything you CAN'T get started??? your AWSOME!!!!

its so addictive to watch your videos, but its cheaper than buying parts for my car so i am not complaining
*Always wanted to see if that will run!!*
Every time i seen it on his channel i always wanted to see it up close and see if it would run!
Looks like it has a good engine!
awesome. hope to see more of this one Darren. cool little rig.

All those sparks and petrol, thought we were going to see an external combustion engine! : )
Good job with that old cushman meter maid , Mustie1 . Keep up the good work and have a nice day..
I see that the Gorton's Fisherman is subbing for Mustie in this video. ;)
Well done on the diagnostics, looks like some fun projects there!
the front suspension looks like it's off from a melex golf cart
The Amazing Mustie Show!
the yellow honda model sold in britain was called the c90 they had a full legshield that covered everything up some were also called the cub because they were 70cc
Mustie1 you gotta love that those Air cooled motors always start with alittle but gas
Thank you mustie1. I never knew how a coil actually worked I didn't know it worked off a ground.
Hey mustie1 would you please do a reviews on the different jumper packs you bought over the years and which one you found to be the best? That Cushman is really cool. You could name her Rita.
Ya Buddy, love it and she sounds good . Can't wait to see what she becomes, cheers The Dizzy One.
Darren the cushman sounds good. Looking forward to more progress. Keep up the great video's.
A very cool project .... thanks for uploading it
I like messing around with those old Cushman carts, though all I have ever worked on is the older battery type used in warehouses.
That ignition switch is those "Universal" ones most parts stores sell
Looking forward to see this moving under it's own steam as never seen one before, well nothing like this in NZ anyway. Be interesting to see what plans you have for it also. All the best
During the police auctions I’ve gone to they’ve always spray painted over the police emblems before selling, so you got lucky with that in this one!
Always enjoy your videos and this one is no exception. Keep them coming - I look forward to watching!
Never any doubt you would prevail! Nice job. Can't wait for next installment.
After many of your videos, I now find myself saying "The hoard pays off" when I find something usable amongst my bits and pieces. |-)
robinbeckford same here.
I know, squeeze a small block Chevy into it for some real fun.. Nice find..
it would be cool to see a retro restauration, what I mean keep the rusty look but make it solid.
It would be great for a full restoration, another fascinating video thanks.
very nice job mustie1 im happy to see that machine running after so many years i look at it lol
can't wait for this old girl to make it into the garage
that thing is just neat!! that'll be cool to run around in 👍..As for the moped could you put a little 4 wheeler like a 50? kind of looks similar...anyway great job as always fun video
Puch Magnums are like every moped dude/chick's dream bike. Would trade my Peugeot 103 for one any day.
mustie is so good he could make me run after eating a big mac combo
Little Rusty, a little crusty, looks like a job for Mustie haha
