  • Tony Underwood was one of England's best players at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, but when he lined up against Jonah Lomu of the All Blacks in the semi-final, he was powerless to stop an absolute masterclass. Five years after his passing, Underwood recalls how in unintentionally added motivation for Lomu, and looks back at the amazing career of rugby's biggest icon.

Jonah Lomu was the Maradona of rugby and he was taken too soon as well a huge loss to the world not just his family and rugby that 95 World Cup put him on a pedestal and no one has come close to him in the sport I'm so glad to be a sports fan and seen Jonah Lomu in full flight on the field of play awesome dude

I had two brief encounters with Jonah. Late at night at a Chinese takeaway in Newtown, Wellington...he was standing behind a pillar trying to be inconspicuous, it was one of those moments where on the instant recognition as I glanced at him and in my head I was breathlessly saying, Jesus, that's Jonah. He looked me in the eye and all I could muster was, Yo...Jonah. He smiled and replied Heya.
I left him alone and basked in the fact he was a mere few feet away from me.
The other time, I was a personal trainer at a very small gym and I came in early and as I went through the door, there in front of me was Ofisa Tonuu, Andrew Blowers and Jonah... I gasped at the sight of Jonah... I proceeded to have a workout while listening to them have a whale of a time with lots of laughter...there were the obligatory nods when we caught each other's eye but I never talked to them...it was just very cool

Jonah was a Tongan at heart...But BEASTMODE when he wore the Pride of being a proud KIWI (New Zealander) when he put on the All Black Jersey. R.I.P Toko....There will never be another JONAH-HULKSTER-LOMU.

He was never in his prime due to sickness, which was scary Imagine if he had been.
    RIP Jonah

I met him after he quit … one of the most self effecting and nice people I’ve ever shared space with (he had a lot of it). He is a sad loss not just to rugby but to the rest of the world

Lovely story about jk and Jonah. Not true though jk retired 1992 when Jonas was 16. They never played together

Who was it that won that world cup again? mmm 1995 world cup, I think it was a team he couldn't score a try against, in his career, ever.
