Man, this was the only game my dad liked. I used to bring my GameCube to his house when I was a kid and we would play. Then after I got a job, I bought him a GameCube and the game so he could play whenever. When I cleaned his room after he od'd, this game was still in his game cube. He really loved it
I'm one of the N/N+/N++ developers (the one next to Mare in that pic at 10:35), and I just wanted to say thank you so much for the shout-out -- it's really nice to know that someone appreciates our work!
Hey, thanks for leaving a comment! Love what you guys did with the series and it's impressive how much you nailed it in the first game. Best of luck on your future projects. ✌️
This was a really fun watch! Always love to see a video from someone who cares this much about this game series as well. :D Your choice to also delve into collision consistency and even explain pause strats was also something I dont see in normal SMB coverage. I hope more people come across content like this, it was definitely fun to see another opinion of all these games which dives in to so much of its intricacy. (>^-^)>
I had a lot of fun while playing Banana Mania! My only gripe is that I found it difficult to make precise movements... even with a GameCube controller! The slightly different physics gives the game a unique feeling, but that one gripe is why I keep playing the originals. Also, have you tried Paperball? I highly recommend trying that game out!
3:30 that stage is actually really simple when you use the minimap on the bottom right of the screen. Once the launchers blast you up the tower you’re supposed to use the minimap to gauge where you need to land. It’s a fun challenge.
You might be getting unexpected bumps because of the way the game's collision checks work. If I remember right, it doesn't check for collision in between frames, so if there's a different frame cycle or any sort of hiccup your movement can feel significantly distorted. And I'll just throw in my two cents: the first game is by far the best. Its elegance and simplicity is great. 2 would make the level design very erratically and without what feels like reasonable design. I got good enough to beat the first game's expert and master mode without dying, so I like to think that I'm good at playing the game, but I always felt that the level design in the second game was often challenging in stupid and undesirable ways, often with unpredictable or chaotic elements that feel like something too far removed from the game's scope. My interpretation of the physics changes in the remake is that it's way too difficult to climb a slope now. It's very easy to be walled by slopes that make once-easy levels very awkward and frustrating. The physics in that one launcher level in 2, along with the monkey target minigame, are totally botched as well.
I like going for the other end goals, but I wish it gave me the option to skip stages. There's stages it skips that I really enjoy. Rerversible Gear caan get lost. Such a bad stage.

Dang that is a sad story. I discovered this game later in life, my dad also passed away last year and I took his Pc home with his games installed.

i like the feeling of circling the joystick in the octogan
I know what you mean, it's a very satisfying thing to do when fidgeting.
Really good video analysis, was very entertaining. Keep up the good work and I think you could become a dang good video game essay channel

0:04 i was expecting him to mention about marble madness from 1984 because marble madness is similar to super monkey ball

That’s the thing with momentum: it’s fun but imperfect.
