When the Paris Climate Agreement was agreed upon, I wrote that there was no possibility that the global average temperature would be held to 2.0 C or less above the pre-industrial temperature. I stand by that. The changes that are required are substantial and most people aren't willing to do what is necessary and governments aren't going to do what is necessary. The Copernicus Climate Service October 2024 report came out yesterday and based upon their report, Oct. 2024 was 1.65 C above the pre-industrial average temperature. We're supposed to be moving into a La Nina and it's not apparent based upon the Oct. global average temperature.

Let’s be cynical: if Donald Trump plunges the American economy in a deep recession, and other countries with it, the CO2 reduction may be exceeding our expectations. Not the most favorite scenario, but certainly one that could have a positive impact on the climate.

Given the rate of warming, due to warming in the pipeline, will continue at the current rate for at least a decade, assuming feedback doesn't take over, a recession may make things worse : when capitalists are broke, they quit spending, R & D, and implementation, would all fall. The process of moving off FF would likely stall.

The Democrats needed Bernie. Bernie has been hoping for the past 4 years, his friend, Biden, would back him, the way Obama backed Hilary. Had Biden backed Bernie, he likely would have won. Part of the reason is Trump is afraid of Bernie : Trump noted Bernie drew much bigger crowds than him.

That was great, thank you. Good that we can laugh in the face of all this, that is a very good thing for our collective sanity. Makes me wonder if we won't address climate problems until we get economics out of the way and that is hard because the web of dependencies connected to fossil fuels is so vast, beyond climate change as you pointed out.
Oil touches everything, makes everything, powers everything and is a chemical feedstock for everything. Decoupling from that is terrifying for almost everyone in business dependent on it. Fears about peak oil going back 20 years or so could have shifted our trajectory back then, and many times before that.
Sagan warned congress about the greenhouse effect in the 70s, nobody listened, we're reaping that now so it's a cascade of black swan events in waiting at this point. Renewables will get us halfway there. They won't replace oil as a feedstock for industry so the answer is to make less things. Naturally that is counter to the growth mantra the economy demands so the most vicious and climate blind corporations may fight for the spoils.
Or we can change. As consumers. By making more choices that are aligned with a better world and a better future. That runs deeper than spending less money or giving up the car a few days a week, it's a change in mindset, in beliefs, in futures. Personally I don't think we'll get very far, until we realise that as a species, if we don't start evolving our consciousness, individually and collectively, we are fucked. Thankfully I also think that people are waking up rapidly and that a secular spiritual revolution is what we need to enable tackling our planetary predicament. Sending you guys a ton of reiki 🙌

"until we realise that as a species, if we don't start evolving our consciousness, individually and collectively, we are fucked." The only way for our "consciousness" to evolve is for the species as a whole to go through a very narrow evolutionary bottleneck in the coming cataclism that will reduce our population to 0.1% its current size or less, with survivors hopefully carrying genes enabling them not to make the same mistake again - of course, in a drastically changed environment.

I wonder if the authoritarian shift in democracies IS climate adaptation. Maybe we don’t give voters enough credit. They understand the climate issue, they see that mitigation is struggling - at best. Meanwhile, climate refugees are flooding in, complex trade is breaking down, fossil still has the power, so voters bristle up and go brute. Mitigation is not the only policy response to the climate crisis. Unprecedented international cooperation is not very likely. Defensive adaptation and prioritizing basics over ethical luxuries sure seems to describe what is happening. Societies are moving onto war footing and making difficult choices. I hope there is something wrong with this theory, but I dont see it yet.

But hey, in the cold light of day, we're f****d aren't we? That said, I think it's unlikely. I've lived through too many false dawns to build my hopes around a political tipping point. Aint gonna happen.
I've found myself turning into a doomer, even a prepper. I'm increasingly thinking about the need to take personal responsibility for my own survival and that of my family. I think for climate it is just marginally important if Trump will leave office in 4 years or not. There are the voters and they are not going away. So after Trump there are still loads of other similar people ready to carry on. So let's plan for +2° or possibly more probable +2.5° if not in our lifetime, then in the lifetime of our grandchildren. Our grandchildren who are growing up right now need a special education on how to survive the harsh conditions they will face. Not only the outer conditions but also the social impact of 1 or 2 billion people that will migrate from less habitable reagions to more habitable ones that are densly populated already.

First of all great podcast! Thank you both. I think the real reason majority of people in the US aren’t doing anything to act on the climate crisis is because somewhere deep down inside, they understand what it means to their fossil-fueled lifestyles if they acknowledge that it IS a crisis. It means a low energy future. No more flying off to meet a friend in New York (or Paris!) for a weekend or running their huge motor boat around some lake in northern Wisconsin. It would mean eating less meat, consuming less fast fashion, less plastic junk, etc. At the very heart of all of this is that most Americans are enjoying their consumerism and they don’t wanna let go of it. Not ANY of it. Over the past decades they have seen their friends, family, neighbors flying all over the place, driving all over the place, buying bigger TV’s, bigger cars, bigger houses. And they want those things too! They do not see what’s coming in the horrors of real food shortages, real water shortages as the weather turns into nightmares of climate catastrophes, one after the other- which honestly we (in the US) have all participated in fueling. It’s a train wreck coming and they don’t see it because they’re blinded by the bright lights. I’m not sure how we go about taking away the future that they have envisioned for themselves and their children, but that future is in jeopardy. Who will tell them?

    • @michaeledwards2251

When President Carter tried gentle restraint to achieve energy reduction, he got thrown out for a man, Reagan, who put hospital mental patients on the street for a quick buck, and started the energy splurge.
Given a choice between splurge, and a future, they chose splurge. President Carter told them. They made their choice and haven't regretted a moment of the splurge.
(When asked, they say he was lecturing, meaning reminding people the world is real. )

A fixed value for some people is good because scarcity can be used to drive up value (much as the robber barons from the 1920's did via the gold standard), markets become manipulatable if you have the wealth to do so, whereas at the moment we still have the last vestiges of a late Keynesian system which states whatever we need is what we can ultimately afford. In essence, it is an approach aimed at removing any democratic control/accountability from the money supply so that at no point can the power of the state (via democratic institutions) be used to remove wealth from those that have it to support those that don't (again). In essence, it will shift the power balance from government institutions over into the hands of a few unelected wealthy people. Put's us back into the good old days.

@@PaulCoelho-n2q Not only that, Simon Michaux has shown we do not having the mining capacity needed and renewables have never been shown to replace the 80% of our energy supply that cannot be electricified as currently only 20% of our energy is electricity. There are no electric transport boats, electric long haul transport trucks, electric planes nor do we even have ability to make the renewables without burning massive amounts of fossil fuels, only to get a very tiny energy returned on invested. Renewables will never work and aren't working currently. Put the hopium pipe down people!

Not every voter for Trump is a climate denier? Sorry, but what other testimony do you need to declare them as climate deniers? I dare say most of us are climate deniers or we would act fundamentally differently. Sure, we say it is bad and we should do something about it - oh, sorry - we say, somebody else should do something about it. Could it be, that Trump and his voters are at least honest climate deniers?
