Okay freaking out set aside, this is actually me. This 4-minute video was actually me.
What can I say... this show! I did not expect to like it so much, let alone fall in love with it. It's just so good, smart, funny (I didn't expect it to be funny at all, and it's actually hilarious?? like?? how??) and overall amazing. 10/10 recommend.
And then, these two... Well, they are a couple of wonderfully written and acted characters. I don't know where this idea came from exactly. But it gave me the opportunity to do something I've wanted to do for a long time.
This is a kind of all-in-one video: a bit of character studies, a bit of platonic relationship study and then, in the end, romantic. I wanted to cover their dynamic fully. So that the romance, which only starts around 3 minutes into the video, feels like a natural progression, something organic and based on the things that came first.
When I showed some scenes from this show to my roommate, she drew a conclusion that I really liked. She said that there's a lot of love in this show but it's not the "sex on the table kind of love," it's the more mature kind of love that comes from friendship and life experience. And I think she nailed it. I hope that, whoever actually decided to watch it and stick til the end, will have the same impression. :)
Also, I've made it a tiny bit AU in a way, basically what would happen if s3 went in a different direction with these and gave us more than these as the comic relief. I know she meant that, like, come on. We all know. :'D
This project gave me so much joy. I really poured my heart and soul into it. I haven't edited something like this in a long long time. Everytime I opened the project, I loved it more. And even when I was angry with it, couldn't stay angry for long, and ended up loving it again. It was truly magical.

I finished the show very recently and I came across this amazing video, you managed to capture the essence of this couple and characters, the way in which they balance perfectly, pushing themselves to improve and growing together without sacrificing their individuality always supporting each other without pushing the other out of comfort zone but accentuating their quirks and frailties and loving each one of them! This is such a wonderful video you told their journey so delicately beautiful.

This is so wonderful and amazing and now I am overwhelmed once more with feelings for these two. I love them so much and I wish we'd gotten so much more of them in season three but I loved your little au take on the ending. "Ugh this is so good!!!+1" is woefully inadequate, but my brain keeps stuttering back to that. Just basking in the beauty of a very well constructed, layered ebbing, flowing and nuanced beautiful portrait of one of the bestest written relationships in tv. This vid has me musing, noticing rocks to turn over and rediscovering reasons I love them. Like how they each go through pain and anger, mistakes and betrayals - but side by side, not as cause and effect (bleh cheap lazy drama). And what they see in themselves as weaknesses, the other sees as strength.
I'd never heard the song, but the contrast of the lowkey urgency of the tempo and jittery stillness of the lyric's story is super evocative. Particularly the phrasing "No one's ever looked at..." (rather than "I" or "you") - there's a sense that they don't treat each other in specific ways, so much as there's safety with each other to be who they are, and it's everyone else who are the odd ones out. ETA: ooh, and "all the paths" are repetitions, crossing similar landmarks, like each of their scenes, because their story isn't so much linear as it is variations on intimacy and understanding, challenge and support. Highlighted by the way you intercut, without ever chaging the meaning
So, so grateful Sorkin didn't start out planning this couple, or even intending Don as a protagonist. I love his writing, but dude can't write a non-established relationship to save his life. Unless, of course, it starts writing itself when he's not looking...

Their relationship quickly became the big draw for me even though I loved the show for many reasons besides.
The back and forth dialogue was really well crafted.
Maddie and Dave had it on Moonlighting.
Sloan and Don are definitely on par with them and following in that continuum.

Fuck it. Obviously the song is the rock for this editor, but constant reverb is rather overwhelming of anything under it. Have it your way... I couldn't get even to the midpoint. I'm sure the tune is aces and someday maybe I'll hear it... when I'm not trying to watch/listen to clips from a beloved tv drama. 😞
