I never imagined my life not being a researcher, never thought of your questions. But I am always curious why people come up with a question like should I go get a PhD and try to be a professor...
Can you please share your experience about moving to a different country for a postdoc position? Is it really as isolating as many people describe? I must say, I'm really worried about this.
It's hard to give a summary of this experience, as it is both isolating and eye opening, both destabilizing and giving new support to rely on -- it makes you poorer and richer at the same time. I believe it is an important experience to live through, and it took me years to adapt to it.
@@math-life-balance I did find the advice good. I am actually on the verge of starting a postdoc and knowing I could simply quit in any moment makes me more motivated to stay in academia.
To first approximation, there are NO research mathematicians. Let's say there are 100 research universities in the US, and each employs 50 mathematicians. That's 5,000 mathematicians in the US, a very small number. You could just as easily become a full-time actor or musician.
@@Martykun36 Yes, I chose to teach. I got sick in academia (panic syndrome) and then in industry (panic syndrome + hallucinations). I found myself as a teacher, I was only guided by my health in my choices.
"I am sending warm regards to your ego" 😂
Thanks for this delightful pep-talk.

wow no "think hard if you really want to continue" no "give it a while and you'll see if it's the right choice"
just "quit" (this is good advice)
It was referring to the stigma of leaving academia

Do be a good researcher you need a bucket full of curiosity
Just do it

спасибо! я иногда устраиваю лайв стримы и там отвечаю на вопросы, в частности, о своем пути в математику. приходите :)
This is just the oposite of "we selected your pre-print to be publish in our scam web", Thanks!

Nice hair btw
I really like studying math, but I don't like doing research.
plenty of industry jobs where you need to keep up with the cutting-edge results
