Oh hurrah for Eleanor Oliphant! I loved it so much and I think about Eleanor all the time, I listened to the audiobook and thought it was fantastic, but I think I will revisit it and actually read it next time, early next year I'm sure! I have recommended it to so many people! xxx
I loved Don't Call Us Dead as Well and I'm planning on taking Eleanor Oliphant on holiday, I have high hopes for it! This year I've really loved reading North and South, Rubyfruit Jungle and The Painted Veil, would highly recommend them all! I hope you have an exciting rest of the reading year!
my faves have been Circe, Eleanor Oliphant, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Radio Silence, Little Fires Everywhere, The Despot’s Accomplice and Educated! Love these videos, I’m not much into fantasy but I’m very tempted by Nnedi Okorafor’s work
"The member of the wedding" by Carson McCullern really made an impression on me,it was amazing. As for YA i think "The inexplicable logic of my life" by Benjamin Alire Saens was absolutely wonderful. And when it comes to middle grade , "The girl who drank the moon" by Kelly Barnhill was so hauntingly beautiful, and very sophisticated for a middle grade book! ❤
The best books I've read so far this year are Lincoln in the Bardo, Through Black Spruce, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Eileen, The Book Thief, The Twelve, Assassin's Apprentice, The Gentleman's guide to vice and virtue, Swimming Lessons, The Secret History (reread), Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, The Sympathizer, Royal Assassin, The Humans and The Raising :)
I LOVED Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine too. Eleanor was SUCH an off-duck, poignant character. I adored her. Really want to read Circe and The Song of Achilles!!
I really want to read Binti, Circe and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine 💖 great hearing your top books so far! Hopefully you have even more awesome reading experiences in the second half of the year. Your hair looks gorgeous btw 😍
Great recommendations! Will definitely pick some of them up the coming months (after I finish reading what’s on my shelf haha). Nice to see Libba Bray in your list as well. I loved reading her Gemma Doyle series as a teen. Do you happen to know of any books (stand alone or series) similar to that series? Lovely video as always. :)
Some interesting choice, some alreeady on my TBR and a couple more added! I've had a pretty good run recently, but read Eleanor Oliphant back in January and loved it with all my heart. Mainly I think becasue I identified with her so much, even though she's not particularly likeable. Since then I have read a good number of 4/5 stars books, much more than I expected to and I think this is because I'm reading many more genres these days. Some of the lesser known ones are Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang - magical realism, The End is Nigh by M.J. Marshall - post apocolyptic, Dragon of Ash & Stars: The Autobiography of a Night Dragon by H. Leighton Dickson - fantasy, Carry the Ocean and it's sequel by Heidi Cullinan - MM romance with mental health and disability issues, and Three Heart Echo by Keary Taylor - horror, mystery, thriller, paranormal.
I'm still working on my best books list :) I loved this video (as always). I have bought myself a copy of Jen's book as it has been on several top books of the year lists so far. I also have Eleanor Oliphant on my tbr. You've really helped shape my tbr this year with your videos - I'm looking forward to reading your recommendations!
Circe is probably my favorite book of the year thus far, and I wouldn't be surprised if it remained so even by the end of the year. It was just phenomenal. A few other favorites were Heartless by Marissa Meyer (which I think you might really like!), Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson, Turtles All the Way Down by John Green (which surprised me by how much I loved it, and was such a meaningful read for me, as someone who suffers from severe anxiety and panic disorder), The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
The Diviners and Alphabet of Thorn both sound amazing, I really need to check them out! I feel like I've read so many good books this year so far! I absolutely loved Orlando by Virginia Woolf, The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke and I've just finish Lirael by Garth Nix. Arden, Clarke and Nix are new favourite authors!
Great video, thank you :-) The Heart's Invisible Furies, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Natives by Akala and This Will Be My Undoing by Morgan Jerkins have made my year so far. All fantastic, absorbing reads although I listened to Natives on audiobook which was a great way to consume that book.
Your hair is getting so long! I love it. Great to hear your favs. And I listened to your podcast ep without reading Circe and it made me want to read it, I didn’t feel like it would have spoiled anything for me.
I loved CIRCE too and DON’T CALL US DEAD was one of my favorite poetry collections last year. 😻 Here’s to even more great reads in the second half of the year.
I love Juliet Marillier and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on more of her books! I’ve only read The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip and didn’t love it but I want to give her another try. Binti/Binti: Home were some of my favorite books last year! I love their exploration of identity, culture, and prejudice! It is amazing how much can be packed into those little novellas! My favorite books this year have been Vicious by VE Schwab, Spellbook of the Lost and Found by Moira Fowley-Doyle, and Seer of Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier :)
I need to pick up more Juliet Marillier and Patricia a McKillip. I used to read them back in high school but since then I have read less fantasy. Daughter of the Forest has been highly praised across the board and i hopefully will pick it up soon. I listened to Circe on audiobook and it is one of my favourite books of year so far. I listened to Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman alongside it and found it a most fitting companion though it is a very different book.
Loved this! Don’t Call Us Dead is also one of my favourite books so far this year, hands down. It’s incredible. Another favourite of mine has been E M Forster’s Howards End😊
Hi Jean! New subscriber here. So far I've been loving the Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. You should try it! The world is based on the Greeks but somewhat of a medieval setting. Very fleshed-out characters, also has some bits of its own mythology in there. I can't wait for the last book!
Two of my favourites so far this year is Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi and Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge. Two very different YA fantasy novels, but so so SO great in their own way :). Have read the whole Binti trilogy also this year and loved it!
I have heard so much hype about Children of Blood, glad to hear you enjoyed it! I might have to check it out. I’ve read and enjoyed Cuckoo Song as well ☺️
My favourites of the year up to now are Butchers crossing by John Williams, Circe by Madeline Miller, Autumn by Ali Smith ( I'm always late) The hearts invisible furies by John Boyne, Lincoln in the bardo magical by George Saunders and Resevoir 13 by Jon McGregor all of which I gave 5 stars to . I also have had a lot of 4 star reads this year. Yayyy !
What's your best books of the year?, I was so hoping you'd ask that, I was already looking at my 2018 Challenge on Goodreads! Mine have been - I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara, Moonstone: The Boy Who Never Was by Sjorn, The Hate Race by Maxine Beneba Clarke, Becoming Unbecoming by Una, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, My Name is Leon by Kit de Waal, The Breakthrough by Daphne du Maurier (one of the Penguin Modern Classic minis) and a re-read of Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian.
Eleanor Oliphant was such a beautiful book! I have Circe on hold at the library, and will have to wait for about 2 months, lol. It sounds worth it though. I trust your opinion after reading and enjoying The Penelopiad...and because of your vast knowledge on the subject matter :)
I feel like I'm being very presumptuous considering we don't actually know each other! But one of the best books I read this year is one I think you'd really like, too, and that's Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough. It's a novel in verse based on the true story of 17th century Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi who was sexually assaulted by a tutor her father brought in for her and, amazingly for her time, she chose to press charges against him even though doing so threatened to harm her reputation more than his. It's so beautiful and powerful and I can't recommend it enough! I can't wait to read Circe, I loved The Song of Achilles, and I really need to read some Libba Bray! I've had a copy of The Diviners on my kindle for aaaages now so I really should get to it soon.
i have loved final girls by riley sager, the lucky ones by tiffany reisz, the fact of a body, strange the dreamer by laini taylor, small great things by jodi picoult
My favorite books so far this year in reading order; Rebecca Stott In the Days of Rain, Katherine Arden The Bear and the Nightingale, Robert Dinsdale The Toymakers, Tomi Adeyemi Children of Blood and Bone, Madeline Miller Circe, Signe Pike Faery Tale, Francis Pryor Seahenge. ❤
I love to hear you say the word "series"! 😊
Oh hurrah for Eleanor Oliphant! I loved it so much and I think about Eleanor all the time, I listened to the audiobook and thought it was fantastic, but I think I will revisit it and actually read it next time, early next year I'm sure! I have recommended it to so many people! xxx
I listened to the audiobook too! I thought the narrator was awesome ☺️
I'm reading Go Tell It to the Mountain by James Baldwin right now. I picked it up on a whim in the library, and his writing is so engrossing!
I’ll have to read more of his work!

Just finished Circe and loved it! I also liked Eleanor Oliphant very much! So I'm taking notes of the rest!
Great minds ;)
The only book I gave 5 stars so far is Everything I never told you by Celeste Ng. Call me by your Name definitely made an impression as well. :)
"The member of the wedding" by Carson McCullern really made an impression on me,it was amazing. As for YA i think "The inexplicable logic of my life" by Benjamin Alire Saens was absolutely wonderful. I just read Daughter of the Forest back in May and loved it! Red is one of my all time favorite characters now! 😍
