Red deer stags at antler shedding time - Richmond Park

  • A bit of "Slow-TV" with 10-minutes of Red deer stags just calmly going about their day during early March at Richmond Park. At that time the red deer were half way through their antler shedding period, with some stags having already cast before mid- February, but others not until well into March.
Filmed during 3 hours at Richmond on 03 March 2020 (before the Covid-19 lock-down; hence plenty of aircraft noise over west London!). Natural audio only; the unusual bird sounds for those not familiar with the park are mainly from non-native green parakeets, which have established feral populations not just at Richmond park but throughout much of the southwest London region.

So very beautiful to see this.
Especially the birds on the head of the hinds.
    I really enjoyed this video.
    Many greetings from Holland 🙋‍♀️🦌🌷

At 2:11, what age difference could be between the two stags? One has impressive dark brown antlers, and the other has simple, light one.

Hi -ageing deer by sight of antlers is not very accurate. However for that locality (where supplemental winter feed is provided) i would expect the smaller one to be no more than 3 to 4 years old, and the larger at least 8 and more likely 10+ years old.

@@LangbeinWildlife Thank you very much! :-) It is very interesting that even in same population of the same species there can be such big differences between the antlers.

Hi, I am going to Richmond Park on 30th of March...do you reckon I will find some deers with antlers or all of them will be shedded by then? Thanks

Hi , The great majority of red deer stags over 3 year old are likely to have shed by that time. However, many mature fallow bucks with palmate antler may not cast until into April.

I would love to know are you allowed to keep the shed off antlers? I’m just wondering if it’s legal or not as I would really want to keep them

In the UK , generally on public access land it tends to be ok, but on private land only with landowners permission ; in deer parks its different again, depending on the local 'bye-laws'. Many parks prefer public not to pick them up, as collect and d sell them themselves. I expect at Richmond quite a lot will be taken by the public, but not very clear in bye-law whether ok to or not; though the majority are likely picked up by rangers at night anyway before main vehicle park gates open.

In the mid 1980s when I worked on a research project there for Royal Park into problems re their condition nad winter die-offs, there were over 1000+ head at Richmond; but since overwinter feeding regime changed and reduced breeding herd to stabilise nearer 600.

I am not 100% sure. I think the park does sell them, but not sure where. Will try and find out.

Poland, Lithuania and Latvia have plenty of red deer and shed antlers to offer for those who want to buy it. Some private land owners have red deer and fallow deer enclosed- they sell cast antlers. But there are much more of those who look for shed antlers in the wild. For the last 5 years I've found and sold around 70 shed antlers of the red deer. Prices from 20 to 100 euro per 1 shed depending on size, mass, beauty and number of tines. A week ago I found 11 pointer- very rare and beautiful piece of antler. Not selling yet, but if I would, this piece of antler would be around 170-200 euro. Greetings from Lithuania🌳🌳🌲.
