The first time I ever seen this movie this scene gave me anxiety, but then I find out years later there's definitely concrete barriers right on the other side of the water. So that kind of softens it a little bit.
Still chilling though.

Everyone is born with a fear of heights. Without it, more humans would fall over a ledge or cliff, being oblivious to the danger. -- That said, there are those whom 'get used to' heights, but even 'thrillseekers' feel some amount anxiety about it, otherwise it would no longer provide a thrill.

This shot is so amazing because there was no green screen involved it was literally the Actors on a sky scraper roof against the NYC Skyline.

It's a real balcony in New York, apparently, but the real one doesn't have a direct sheer drop off the edge from the viewing platform. (Which makes sense, there has to be a basin to catch the falling water.)
@@stephenbarringer235 the water garden in the sky effect was an early use of CGI. The actual stage the actors are on is on the roof of a sky scraper with sheer drop offs against the NYC sky line. Director Taylor Hackford confirms this on the DVD Commentary.

Everyone - help me. At 2:10, "Kevin" looks down at Milton's feet. A few people have said that Kevin can't believe Milton so casually steps near the very edge of the 'cliff' without any issue or concern. Other people have said, he noticed that his leg slightly 'bent' in like a Goat's leg. Other people have said it's because Milton is purposely wearing shoes with 'lifts' to make him seem taller. What do YOU see that Kevin notices?
it’s definetley about the shoes, Milton states later in the movie that vanity is his favourite sin. Kevin is noticing for the first time that Milton is vain and would even wear lifts on his shoes to make himself seem taller, as he is already quite short.

the devil deals in deceit and manipulation as well as hatred and violence. he’s literally a walking contradiction. he keeps himself short, to be underestimated and inconspicuous, but yet wears lifts to be vain.

Always loved the way pacino walks here. It comes across as hooves stepping around in shoes.
That and considering he's walking between two infinity pools of water, it's like he's doing a mockery of Jesus walking on water.

This was made before Morpheus pulled him out of the Matrix.
This entire scene the Devil is getting to know his son and most importantly how sinful he is. Notice how he asks questions about his belief in God or how it was growing up without a dad or the relation he had with his mom. In other words if he feels bitter about that.
The Devil already knew the answers to those questions. He was making sure that Kevin knew that he, Milton, knew.
It is also parallel to the Devils temptation of Christ, when the Devil taunted Jesus to throw himself off of a cliff and have his Father's angels rescue him.
Such an underrated film.
All these years later and I just noticed his legs bend backwards where they shouldn't, seeming to hint at hooves. Damn.

@@filipjuric9135 Look at Pacinos lower legs and you'll see that instead of bending forwards as knees should they bend backwards. Only on screen for a few seconds but it's there.

Kevin want`s his fathers attention ( the lack from the trauma they are talking about). That`s why he is asking these questions. Because he all ready know what buttons to push. This is also why he know`s that Kevin is desperat for attention ( vanity). So he he is mainly exploiting his narcissism. The money is just to seal the deal ( notice they don`t even talk about the money in this scene, it`s later we hear about the amount he is making pr hour). He also later uses sex to lure him in, but he actualy never cheats on his wife. It`s the other way around. Milton has a affair with his wife.

Al Pacino's Performance as a Devil is Manipulative, Cunning and Devilishly Charismatic.
De Niro's Performance as The Devil is Magnetic and Surreal.
Peter Stormare's Performance as The Devil is Nightmarish, Insane with dark sense of humor (obviously) and Absolutely terrifying.
These 3
Actors in my opinion gave the best performances as Lucifer and showed all 3 sides of that persona. I mean Viggo Mortensen in The Prophecy also gave a pretty good performance as Lucifer.
My favorite performance of the devil is probably Jun Kunimura in the Wailing

You know what’s weird, as someone who went into this movie with no idea of what to expect, the first 1/4 of Al pacino’s character I found extremely redeeming. Comforting. Relatable and trustworthy. Dead serious, I was analyzing it as it happened. As soon as the film flips about 1:3 of the way through, he became incredibly different. The evil he truly portrays. It’s such a great performance imo
