Complete Breath sounds: Normal/Abnormal Lung Sounds, Types & Conditions

- In this video, there is a quick review of breath sounds heard on auscultation.
The normal breath sounds are Vesicular breath sounds heard in most of the lungs. It is soft and of low pitch. The inspiratory phase in longer than the expiration without any pause between these two phases.
Abnormalities can be the presence of bronchial breath sounds, diminished or absent breath sounds, or the presence of added/Adventitious breath sounds.
Bronchial breathing is hollow, tubular in quality, and high-pitched. There is a definite gap between inspiration & expiration.
Added or Adventitious sounds include wheezing, Crepitations, Pleural friction rub & Stridor.
Wheeze can be Low pitched also known as Rhonchi or High pitched which is the usual wheeze. Low-pitched wheeze/Rhonchi is caused by secretions in smaller airways causing narrowing while high-pitched wheeze is because of Bronchospasm.
Stridor is not included in this video as it is not classically a breath sound auscultated but is audible without a stethoscope and is caused by narrowing/obstruction of larger airways.
A good stethoscope like the Littman stethoscope is a must to pick up sounds easily during auscultation.
It is encouraged to listen to breath sounds (included in the video) with headphones.
We hope you enjoy this video!
Good luck!

Arielle Bok - Very Nice. Many Thanks !
Last Second Medicine no problem! Great video! Thank you :) Let's hope i can now hear the difference in breath sounds for my osce tomorrow!!
Good luck. You will do fine !
Arielle Bok (i'm checking my own breath sounds with a stethoscope from amazon) can you give me a simple description of how bronchial sounds different from regular? I can't really hear it, and I think I may have bronchial
Ugly Jerk check the sounds of ur trachea and compare it with the bronchial sounds u hear on ur lung.. If theu are similar u are right it's bronchial. if they aren't so it's not bronchial sounds
Covers a 50 minute seminars worth of content in 5 minutes, bravo
I’ve been wanting to learn more about breath sounds to improve my nursing assessments, thank you for sharing your video!

Thanks Jesus Anaya
Finally a nice video on the topic! Thanks.
Wonderful presentation.
Highly recommended.
I have shared it with my medical students.
Correction, according to Gary persing's Respiratory care exam review, in bronchial breath sound, expiration is longer than inspiration. And that the equal duration of inspiration and expiration is that of a bronchovesicular breathsound. :)
But overall, its really helpful for my review. More vids about respi care pls! :)
Agree! Also read that from the book of Patricia Dillon
Absolutely correct
Vesicular sound is normal one
And there ll a gap between inspiratory phase and expiratory phase
I'm probably 4 years late to say this, but thank you so much, that was very helpful.
very precise and straight to the point. Great work.
Thank you so much for this video! You have made studying and understanding my material a lot easier!
you're welcome. glad it helped you.
please consider sharing with friends if found useful.
niwarikirie?
just so people don't get confused bronchovesicular breath sounds are equal in duration NOT bronchial breath sounds.... in bronchial breath sounds, expiration is greater than inspiration
No, in bronchial breathing inspiration and expiration is of same duration
Agreed.
Bronchial breathing: inspiration = expiration phase
Vesicular breath sounds: inspiration > expiration
Bareilley mein Kahan se ho aap ?
Tracheal &bronchovesicular are equal in duration
Bronchial and vesicular are not equal ;the former expiration longer and the latter inspiration longer
OP is correct. Textbook answer is bronchial longer than inspiratory with a break in between. Bronchovesicular about equal in length typically no break in sounds.
My friend thought I was watching star wars xD great vid

Once a mother call s to doctor and said her daughter is breathing like Dark Weider, and for Doctor it was a best explanation that baby in trouble 👍Usually when parents say baby breathing is not good, very difficult to understand how much serous the problem is.
Thank you very much! Sometimes, training on this can be really useful, especially because u don't have the pressure of a potential patient in a high risk condition :)

THANK YOUUUU
I have COPD and asthma. It's easy to hear myself wheezing I'm having exacerbations, even without a stethoscope. I can even feel the crackles if I'm sick enough with bronchitis or pneumonia. I've listened to my lungs with a stethoscope, and yep, sounds just like that.
I also feel crackles in my lungs when I inhale. Also my one side of nose gets clogged all the time for 2 months. Cant wait to see the doctor but is this a sign for asthma?
@@faridaakbarli Asthma makes it hard for you you to breathe as your lungs feel 'tight' and produces mucus when you cough. You make a whistling sound as you breathe. Lung 'crackles' are indicative of something else. They can occur from bronchitis and other lung disorders and infections. The stuffed up nose is not from asthma, more than likely allergies or sinus infections. A trip to the doctor is a very good idea.
@@PhantomQueenOne yes i dont have any mucus or anythin. Thanks a lot!!
@@PhantomQueenOne im afraid of phenovmonia as well. Corona sucks
@@PhantomQueenOne does asthma cause chest tightness??? Does it also hurt to cough????
Nice, thank you

Does the 1:04 minute noise belong to a child or an adult? It is normal noise, right?

For the vesicular it said inspiration longer than expiration , wouldn’t that be the opposite ? Isn’t the normal I/E ratio 1:2 ?
Inspiration is longer than expiration in vesicular breathing
