Smart was founded by Swatch clocks and Mercedes-Benz so S(watch)M(ercedes)ART(because of the unusual way of a lot of things at this car). In the early 90's they were thinking of putting two electro engines in the rear wheels but they thought with that they couldn't sell enough.

That changli is just a golf cart for cheap. It doesn't have any crash protection zone. If you are competing this smart against similar priced golf carts, you are still bullying them. At least smart is a real car. Jalopnik said for it's price its better than US made golf cart.

I've had My 2014 ED almost 3 years. I bought it in Utah from a company that had it wrapped with their logos and on display in their lobby after Howie Mandel used it at one of their conventions to get around inside the convention center, I got pictures of him inside of it. I got it for $7600 with only 4250 miles, looked brand-new. I Love it! I bought it because i went back to school and the university had free charging, 2 years almost free charging other than a home charge on a weekend here and there. I relocated to Virginia for a 1 year commitment to my employer had the car transported here. No one ever believes me that it is all electric, got vanity plates that read 'LIL EV'. Im have way through my 1 year stay and i will be transporting it back to Utah when I return. My regular range is about 65 in normal weather, 55 in winter snow, and most in summer i've gotten is 72.

I want a EV so bad but they gotta go way down on pricing and double their range before I even consider them at this point. Averaging 60 to 100 mile ranges on full charge for mid range EV’s and 220 miles for 40k up to 100k tesla’s isn’t gonna cut it price or range wise to replace gasoline cars. My 2007 Chevy HHR that I have invested $4,500 in all in and is a used low mileage replaced engine and minor other works been done and it runs like a new car now and been traveling out the ass in it the last two years and paid only $900 bucks for it as is and now it gets me 450 to 500 miles every full tank highway driving.
Which I mostly do in it. Trips of 150 to 200 miles on the norm near every other week and it still runs like new. In all I have about $4,500 invested in it over time and all and can go 450 to 500 miles and in a 40k to 100k EV… You can’t even go over 220 miles at most. Plus it takes only a few minutes to fill up a gasoline car and we’re on our way for 450 to 500 more miles. You’d be where I can go days later at 450 to 500 miles having to charge over 4 hrs to days to go the same distance in a EV and EV charge points aren’t at every gas stop. They cost too much, limited range and take too long to charge. Show me a EV that cost less than 5k that can go 450 miles and can fill it in minutes? I’ll wait. You better carry a GAS generator with you every where you go to get to your destination days later. Better bring a tent while you wait for days for it to charge up. I love EV’s don’t get me wrong but they gotta be affordable and go further cause at this point they just aren’t practical right now. Plus I OWN my HHR and my disabled ass can’t own a EV that will go the range my used HHR can go. Plus its a 4 cylinder and goes and goes on little gas. Hell it takes like 48 to 50 bucks to fill it’s 16.2 gal tank and can go 450 to 500 miles on that. Can’t beat that for $4,500.

mentioned it at least a couple of times but didn't quite include it in the equation: the Changli car costs $1.3K NEW, while the smart car costs $7K used ... should i go on?

I enjoyed the comparison. But you are really comparing apples to oranges. First of all you have a 5 to 7 year old used car and are comparing it to a brand new car. How about comparing your car to a $300 used Changli? I really wouldn't feel comfortable in either car for fear of encountering an SUV. But is there really ever the perfect car. What counts is that you are happy with your car, just as the guys with the Changli. Thanks.

My reason with no actually knowledge behind it would be that they call it that to make it seem like a smart purchase and that if bought it would be a smart idea.

My wheelchair is faster than that Chang-li but I’d rather crawl than be in the Smart. Plus who compared these two? Obviously there’s no comparison really. For the $1200 they paid it’s an awesome little neighborhood car that’s unique. Just my two cents lol

The 10 times more expensive speakers are not even double better.
The problem of those Chinese car is the safety issues:
All together has only one chance.
But I will say it's a good replacement for scooter.

I don’t mean to nitpick however comparing the Chinese electric car come to the $7000 electric car is unfair challenge or comparison because the out-of-pocket expense of the Chinese electric cars about $4000..

Yea they also overpaid for the Smart. Mine was $3600. 500e is about $7k
What's more interesting is they both have the same Zytek 55 motor. Yet the Smart is rwd.

6:55 yup because all the cars before the 70s were not real cars. Jokes aside ,people don't need alot of these things and the savings can be applied to other more important parts of the car.

A glorified golf cart vs what is equivalent to a covered motorcycle (smart). If argue nether is more than a people mover and would argue the base model 3 is 5x the vehicle that smart ever was.

my family has owned three petrol smarts since they first came on the market. they are much more than they seem to be to most people. i drove a 44 ton petrol tanker before i retired but love our 2017 smart.we only need a two seater car now and my wife loves driving it,its a twin plate auto very smooth.

@@johnbellamy6449 no doubt they are efficient people movers but they lack a lot of flexibility requiring a larger vehicle as a backup or run the risk of being handicapped on capacity and passenger capacity
