  • In this video I bring you along as I have a look at a Chevy Equinox that came in with a customer complaint that the battery would die after sitting for about 3 weeks. It is a good thing to stick to your diagnostic plan (mostly haha) that lead us to a TSB that had the same symptoms as our car. Let's see if we can fix it. -Enjoy!

    I just want to thank you eric for all the videos you have posted and all the lessons you have taught. From mostly what I learned watching you I was able to properly diagnose my cars abs module being faulty rather than throwing wheel bearings at it. Saved me tons of money and more importantly time. What you do makes a difference so again. Thank you.

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      wow, good job, it is hard to diagnose modules since they can be intermittent at times. Unless it was a complete dead module, then checking power and grounds and still no com after data wire integrity check, then there is nothing else but the module itself.

    • @deadlymetal7694
      @deadlymetal7694 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@scientist100 i had communication but it had a right rear speed sensor circuit fault. I fould some corroded wires and patched them up but still had the code. I used my meter to verify the signal was making it to the module and it was. I could also see the signal on my scanner so i sent it in to be repair and sure enough it was fixed after the reinstall.

    I particularly enjoyed this video with the 2011 equinox. Your diagnostics are just awesome. I’ve been retired now for almost 15 years so much my onboard data has far surpassed its expiration date! Before I retired I worked in GM Service Operations on the Equinox while it was in preproduction. I also worked on Tracker, both of which were built at GM/Suzuki joint venture plant CAMI, in Ingersoll Ontario. The group I worked with was responsible for initiating a lot of the tech bulletins like you were working with. You said that the lack of inter communication makes you want to jump off a bridge. Me too. However, the first priority was always to get the information out to the dealerships/service repair industry where it would be most useful. I think all of your analysis was spot on and reprogramming the hvac module was the right thing to do. It will be interesting to watch this work out. I hope the draw is corrected, and I hope you get some positive feedback from this customer. Again, I love your channel and will look forward to future videos, and I promise to binge watch all your stuff. Oh, I could tell you stories … OMG.
    Best regards from under the bridge!

      That's awesome!
      BTW, I do specialize on the First Gen Equinox here in Mexico. I did an LX Swap on my 2005 Equinox (LX9 3500 out of a 2005 Malibu, it was Plug and Play).
      I want to ask this: I have a client that I will diagnose her 2005 Equinox. It has a 2005 VIN, but it has the E38 ECM, and almost everything from the 2007-2009 Equinox instead of the 2005-2006 with the P05.
      Does Pre-production cars can get to normal customers?
      Hope to read your reply!!
      Greetings from Guadalajara!

      @@Alpha06R Hello! I’m sorry I can’t answer the specific question you asked but I can tell you that pre-production cars, which are the first dozen or so off assembly line, do not get sold. Normal vin codes on the units, 000001 to whatever the determined number of preproduction is. They get used around the plant for transportation and for service activities or investigations until the next years preproduction models are built. The preproduction models eventually are scrapped, usually crushed. I’ve taken my name to the crusher myself to make sure it happens. I actually took one preproduction unit to GM’s crash test facility for an investigation of a customer service concern. It was really cool to make it happen and the video helped me immensely to make a production change. Having the car available to use was great. No one wants to crash a salable car.
      Cheers!

    Re-read the service bulletin. Step 3 says to pull the fuse AND REINSTALL. THEN check for 70ma draw. You did not reinstall before checking. It would seem that removing the power to the module did indeed reset it, and the calibration was the culprit. Fine job as always.

    Had a similar problem on a 2018 GMC Terrain with a turbo charged 2.0L I4 that was purchased new in the summer of 2018.
    The CUV was owned by Municipal Government agency assigned to an elected official. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it wasn’t being used much and sat in a city-owned downtown parking garage.
    It developed a parasitic battery drain that manifested a year after it was purchased. The CUV constantly had to be jumped started. The CUV hadn’t been driven a lot and it had about 9,000 miles on it.
    The GM dealership where it was purchased from just kept replacing the battery since it was still under warranty. They replaced the battery twice. They weren’t interested in properly diagnosing the problem and repairing it.
    A second GM dealership a least put in the effort to try a determine what was draining the battery. They would keep the vehicle for several weeks at a time doing parasitic drain test. After the third round of testing they concluded it was some type of radio frequency (rf) interference that was waking up the power seat module.
    The problem with that was radio interference is everywhere in a downtown area of a large city with people using remotes to lock/unlock their vehicles, police/fire and municipal departments using their two way radios, etc. so that can’t be avoided. Basically, everyone’s vehicles are constantly being bombarded with rf interference.
    The parasitic drain was never found, I solved the issue by getting the newly elected office holder to take the CUV home so that the vehicle would be used on a daily basis. As long as the vehicle doesn’t sit fro 2 to 3 days without being started, it able to keep the battery fully charged.
    General Motors never admitted there was a problem with this brand new vehicle and everything was covered under warranty.

Maybe when remote hvac module was powering on the heat control and that temp actuator was miscalibrated and the clicking you had us hearing was a door sticking trying to find is home. I do too much swearing when I take the AIR tubes off... The two wheel drives aren't bad but the all-wheel drive suck. You can get the tubes off without pulling the manifold but they're real pisser to do. And there's two teeny tiny ports in the head. You're setting when it's cold could be because it's actually freezing. That's relatively common if you leave your car outside. Most people that Park them indoors don't have that issue I've noticed. Very common with the Eco booms

    So did it cure the issue? The bulletin said a consistent 70mA draw but you had an intermittent 70mA draw, admittedly the numbers fit perfectly but the wording, as in most tech docs is vauge and confusing. I'm sure if it comes back we'll see the part 2. It's nice to see a mechanic who can do the auto spark work, in the UK most make out like its a dark art. Thanks for the videos

    Also youtubers stop calling this guy he’s trying to run a business. I know as an experienced industrial maintenance person unless you are looking at the problem and have test equipment hooked to it nobody can help over the phone usually. That’s just the way it is with modern equipment. 😎🇺🇸

    When I worked on large computer systems updates gave me anxiety. Typically the update would correct all the known problems and install a whole new set of gremlins.

    we bought a 2010 Equinox in 2010, we lived in CA then, it was home, My wife loved the Car, little did I know it's pretty much a fair whether automobile. We now live in the Tri cities eastern WA; this car sucks for driving in the winter, and if there is snow / ice, the accelerator shuts down to idle, the first time we experienced that was here in a snow storm, pulling out from a side street here, the thing goes to idle, and here where stuck side ways and trying to get the engine to rev up and go, with a car bearing down on my side. By the grace of GOD I got it to go. Now the car sits most of the winter in the garage; I have a 2015 black 4x Chev 1500. we use that much of the winter. Chevy sucks. I will say, I did own a 2005 GMC, that truck was awesome, run great, wish I still had one over this PU.
    Your a good man Eric, like how you give it your all for your customers. Treat them right, even if they aren't always on the up and up. that makes you a mark above the mark.
    For all who would read this, listen up, There are watchers; that's gospel: they see and tell, and it all goes down in the books. ??? ! every foul carless word and the like. Know the word, Jesus is that word of truth all men must known, if not, it's to go the way. Jesus is the only way to salvation, Blessings to all in Christ Jesus. amen

    All I can say is quit calling Eric, I know how hard it is to find an honest mechanic, but he’s a 1 man show showing us how to fix our cars. You want to call someone, try Scotty Kilmer, lol. Honestly though another great video without the hype

    Any newer car is going to have some battery draw while it's just sitting. In my opinion, FWIW, any newer car that's gonna sit for more than a week or so should have a battery tender on it.

    • @Slicerwizard
      @Slicerwizard 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      IMO, it's not a low drain that's an issue. Any lead acid battery that's just sitting needs to be charged / topped up periodically and not just left to sit for months. Applies to older cars as well. You could pull the positive cable off the battery and still end up with a sulphated battery, given some time.

    If you go back and re-read the TSB (1:48), it says to pull the fuse and then reinstall it. Then the intermittent draw should be gone. And if it is gone, do the software update. So you did the right thing, just missed the remove and immediately replace step for the fuse. Seems like the module gets stuck in some kind of loop, which pulling and replacing the fuse resets it out of. Either way -- I'll bet you got the right fix. As usual. 🙂

    I hope you get paid the correct amount by the customer and they are happy !
    Not everyone understands that sometimes it's a bunch of research involved to get the correct answers and even though the engine wasn't rebuilt You did invest time and your knowledge to fix or know what needs to be done to get it fixed . I'm in my mid 50s and from when I was 18 to mid 30s a good friend of mine worked as mechanic for GM . He could have opened his own shop as he was a Hell of a mechanic and his reputation was well known by Many! His time away from his job at Chevy dealership was spent in the home garage...a lot !
    My extremely long ' comment ' is to say some people Just Don't get it ..at times it's research and not much in parts ..Customer says That much $ and it was only this to fix .
    I liked when he'd say to me ( not Customer) Not paying for what I did..
    You're paying for what I KNOW !
    He moved away and many now wish he'd stayed .
    It's NOT easy finding a Excellent, Honest and Fair mechanic..if you do they become family.
    I have learned much from your videos and my 04 silverado has or had issues I went straight to S.M.A. to gets answers ...correct each time !
    Thank You for sharing and I hope to
