This time yesterday all the reports were that it would make landfall just north of or right at Clearwater… 12 hours later, it was Fort Meyers… not long before, it was the panhandle.
These storms must be very, very tricky to forecast. If it is so difficult, I would very much like to hear much less confidence in reporting by the reporters. They speak as if they know what is going to happen (with occasional caveats) but it seems like they were, in this case, just spitballing. I had an offer from someone in Fort Myers, at 7:00 yesterday morning to evacuate there… this was the thinking based on the coverage. This person, probably not alone, was offering to help because Fort Myers was not in the discussion.
Maybe this sort of localized phenomenon is too difficult to forecast over 24 hour periods and I should listen, rather, to the reporting about global weather events over the next 25 to 100 years as such seem much easier to forecast and the reporters seam zealous, maybe religious, in the certainty of their reporting.
Hurricanes are good for ratings though…

@@Ryattt81 what I am suggesting is that it is highly unpredictable but their reportage does not make this clear. The example I gave should provide adequate context to demonstrate this… our relative in Fort Myers, just yesterday at 7:00 AM felt comfortable enough, based on the reportage, to invite us to take refuge in Fort Myers where the storm seems now to be approaching landfall. Were the reporters more careful and more realistic, they would not have provided such an impression.
Because it is not an exact science (not really even close when you figure the time, severity and location differences between yesterday at 7:00 AM and today at the same time) there should be appropriate humility and context provided so that people in Fort Myers feel appropriately at risk and so that people in Tampa aren’t certain.
      It’s not cynicism… it’s a semi-colorful appeal for candor and accuracy.
Some of my comment was aimed at a diagnosis of the cause for the lack of candor and accuracy… ratings = money and short term > long term in todays media culture.

@@gingrai00 I agree. My brother and his family were going to come south to Port Charlotte because Tampa Bay was the target but now well, grateful they stayed put. We are now in the thick of it without options so hunkering down.
