That clear lock came with my beginner pick set. I quickly learned it's bypass-able with a knife pick!
Genius! You can also drop on the ground fart on it late a match inside of it banging off your forehead all acceptable ways to open a practice lock which intention is not to keep you out but to allow you to see the functions of poorly made locks
Best explanation I've seen of how to do this. Major lock companies still design locks this way. Good tool to have in your kit. "Stay legal."
Those clear resin-body locks are great not just for beginners but also for basic demonstrations. I like the one I have, it's been useful, especially for my hooks when I want to see how much I am actually raising pins other than the one I am focusing on.
The fact that locks vulnerable to this are still being made speaks lots about the abuse of companies when consumers don't have the knowledge of what they are truly purchasing.
The average thief is gonna just use a crow bar or a bolt cutter.

Comb picks can be dangerous : if you push them past some long pins it can be very tricky or almost impossible because the prongs can't raise the pins from the side....
been trying to decide if I could justify the cost of a set of these recently, thanks for saving my money
You might be surprised how many locks they can open. Remember, Bill lives in some odd alternate dimension that still has a bunch of plain warded locks.

It's interesting how chamfered those key pins are. This is a practice lock of course but that makes it easier to pick, no?
That's the point. You want beginners to have success so that they feel motivated to keep doing it.

Is there a way to determine how many pins there is by looking at the lock? So you know ur using the right pick? Or us just gotta feel and count?
Can u please explain to me why the 16 dollar covert combs work, but the 50 dollar southord doesn't work. Do I have to polish the southord, because there r alot of sharp edges on it. I spoke to lock noob and he said it's user error probably. But the same 2 comb picks I used on the same lock, covert works, southord don't. Thanks

I have to say this looks more trouble than its worth.
InTheNameOfJustice well it's probably not worth carrying.... but if a lock is old and shitty, but you're not able to pick it, why not give a comb a try?
@@notpulverman9660 The four and five pin ones are very much worth carrying because a lot of master locks are susceptible to this and are super common. the others not so much.
@@kidthorazine For sure. The 140 and 150 in my collection are both easily bypassed with a 5 comb.
i believe the masterlock 140 can be bypassed this way.

Hey bill, I just got a really nice dimple pick set today in the mail, what are some good name brands padlocks that I can use my new dimple set?

could you do a quick knife bypass on that clear lock? I can only ever get one side to release and have no clue where that sweet spot is.
Is there any way to modify a lock to prevent comb picking and pushing past the shear line? Aside from getting a new cylinder all together that has the better paracentric key way?
Longer driver pins or shortening the chamber with grub screws may be a viable method.

Jusmor yea i was wondering about that...reminded me of my first homemade bumpkey - zip right in then get caught on a pin. Spend the next hour trying to pick the bump key out :/
I bought these a month ago 4 50 dollars. I thought they were junk. The same 16 dollar set from covert works fine. Please tell me I have to sand them down or something. Lock noob told me it's user error

Know what you mean regarding those Bill. I got some when I started locksport.... To me a gimmick after watching videos. They have worked a couple of times on rubbish locks and now gathering a lot of dust

careful with them (comb style picks), I got one thats ben stuck in the cylinder key for about a week inside a boron carbide MasterLock. I'm about to call the lock a lose any minute if can't get this pick out, damn.
hello bill, one of my locksmith buddies gave me a a lock that came off a vending machine, iam not sure, if it a a tubular lock? the lock is in the middle of the square T -handle, its circular with a raised dimple or button design , with a a small half moon key way taking up about one third of the locks face. any help on what type of lock this is, and the best way to pick it would be great!! that mike

Don't be so quick. Some of the Abus padlocks can be combed open.

They are very common and not expensive, just search for "training lock" in amazon or so.
Master lock is king in combs
I bought a set from UK Bumpkeys and they worked well on a few locks, even a Master No. 150. I feel like there is potential to damage a lock with these, but I'm not sure. Great video!

Be careful, you could definitely get a mark against your channel if TH-cam decideds the thumbnail meets the criteria for "misleading or racy thumbnails".
+Narpas if anything, it wouldn't fall under that rule since that is about thumbnails. he doesn't use the outro images for his thumbnails. it would fall under nudity which is a gray area on youtube, especially with "educational" videos. but i'm sure his video will be safe since its hardly visible.
