I went over to Stihl battery hedge cutters a couple of years ago, long reach, extendable long reach and small hand held. Yes it is an investment for sole traders like us but I rate them highly, quieter, no fumes, powerful and less wear and tear on my pulling arm. My old petrol models are spare. But yes a pricey investment. Not ready for battery lawn mower yet though, they’re a long way from being in the same league as my petrol mowers. Good subject Rob. Weather has been very good here on the Sussex Riviera!
I'm tempted to buy one on the back of Rob's glowing recommendation to replace my aging trimmer. However I'm intrigued by your comment, what kind of work do you think it's not suitable for?

Hi Rob Fantastic machine I'm still using my stihl petrol machines and my etesia petrol mower I did have a battery hedge trimmer but accidentally drove over the battery, the battery was £185. Keep up the great videos
I’m not a professional Gardner like you guys, my Honda petrol mower cost too much to service each year so the mower was replaced with a battery powered one. Great for a none professional and an old bloke. My hedge trimmers are Stihl battery - very good. However I wanted a single source powered set of tools and the Stihl range was just too expensive to completely move to, so I appreciate why professionals find it too costly to move over to battery powered tools when petrol equivalents are much cheaper to buy and run. I have 5 different types of batteries to deal with. Great vid thank you. Regards Mike
Good Video i bought a 40v makita hedge trimmer . got it will 3 batteries costings £600 but 3 batteries dont last long on big winter work so i had to buy a power station so i could charge them while im working and that cost me £600 which is a game changer for battery tools . it only takes around 40mins to charge so i only needed 2 batteries but at the time i didnt have my charging station .
Great video rob all my gear is petrol powered and has been since i started out 25 plus years ago.i have honda for the lawns ,stihl for the hedges, and husqvarna for tree work, think they are brilliant i always have them serviced and ready for the new season and never let me down. Haven't tried the battery alternatives but i see good reviews from people who have them. Im happy with mine ,but maybe something i with look into. Cheers rob have a good week.
Great vid Rob. Just a note, it doesn't take a ap300s battery to run a stihl hedge cutter. I run mine on a AP100 £95.00or if it is thick stuff AP200 £135.00 to make it as light as possible. Monday morning & the weather has just gone south after what has been a fantastic week here in the NW England.
Hi Rob I got a husqavana hedge cutter it's light and quiet, but I have found leaves get trapped under fuel tank and handle and need to blow out regularly but it still a great cutter.
I have just got one after watching your first video about the hedge cutter, looked at echo and stihl and this is by far the best one value for money and the only one with the different position handle and anti vibration in the domestic range , nice and light too
Hi Rob, yes it’s a good piece of kit, but I tend to use long reach gear , saves getting up and down hop ups and steps, and I can reach most of the hedges I do from one side so saves time and effort But everyone to there own
As you know I love my battery gear. Ego is my brand of choice. But there not better for the environment. Well, maybe at point of use. But definitely not in manufacture, transport etc. I honestly believe battery is the future. But it's got a way to go before it's any good for commercial use mowers. Plus, if you already have fully working petrol gear. Then it makes no sense to ditch it for battery in my opinion. But if you do ever go down the battery route, maybe if your just starting out and can afford to do so I don't think you'd ever regret it.

Their "professional" range is the 522 series. Have you tried one of those?? I have a 522HD60x [2 foot bar and high speed for fine finish] and a 522HDR75x which has a 30 inch bar and a slower speed for thicker over grown hedges..

Only difference i can find is the "professional" modle has less vibration, but is over double the price?? Hmmm, have i been done??
Cordless...no vibration, no ear defenders, no noise intruding on neighbours,no servicing except a sharpen, ....not without their quirks but no going back for me and my colleagues
What do you use to oil and clean the bar?? What is best?? I use Stihl superclean, but it does not seem very "oily" to me.. Should i just use engine oil??
Hey man im 57 had a heart attack and bypass a few years ago lol but next year i want to start. I watch your videos, where is the best info or book on learning the basics of a garden maintenance job. Ie the actual work. Ive got a list of the tools you use and gonna get them 2nd hand, i presently do all the food delivery jobs, uber food eat amazon flex but doesn't pay minimum wage but i should be able to transition into your job taking taime off when i need to.
Ideally you should go to college and learn the trade as a progession. Carried out properly you should be well compensated for your efforts. The days of horticulture being a low skill trade are hopefully behind us so don't be afraid to charge a decent hourly rate.
I've gone battery - mainly for hedges - simply for the low vibes. After 30 years the petrol gear caused carpal tunnel problems. Battery strimmers are pretty crap except where less speed is useful near windows - although I still managed to smash a cold frame pane. Petrol does have the power advantage but going back to it on hedges is not good after getting used to the cleaner air.

Husqvarna Battery offers 25 % blade speed over petrol thus a great finish. Also pole hedger gives me safety , more on the ground and because of the distance away from the shrub a better perspective . Sure battery is dearer although for the price of a petrol husqvanna pole hedger its the same as the battery with a battery and charger , In Australia husqvanna give us 20 % discount. Battery other than blade sharpening no maintenance, mine 4 years plus not one cent spent .. and I do a lot of hedges. Customers love the quietness and so do I and no vibrations and so light . This is just my experience Rob and not saying your way is wrong its just different experiences I guess. Good review

Since I started gardening in 2009 I'm a lover of stihl 87 30 inch single sided hedge cutter, amazing machine and bomb proof But to be fair the husqvarna looks good and I could buy nearly 3 of them for the price of the stihl
Louder, smellier, heavier, pricier to run, needs servicing, harder to start. No thanks. Battery all the way. Battery kit is a good investment in not only your business but your health too.
Keep thinking about changing over to battery gear but me petrol gear goes great like you say the battery's are expensive plus at 60 I think I'm too old to reinvest now
I hate it when you see some well tado you tuber saying they have received something for free and expect us to believe its great, like you have I give my 2 pennies worth on a bit of kit, but it might not be for everyone. I had Ego, I thought it was great, but had way too many problems with the batteries, but once you go battery petrol becomes an afterthought. I (at the moment) like the stihl stuff. I will never get rid of the petrol gear, there will always be a place for the raw power. but the benefits of using battery outway the cost factor. but that's an individual choice

When the estate manager of a big residential garden maintenance contract that I’d had for a few years (worth £10,000 per year to me) retired, I had to reapply to the new manager for the work. They’d just undergone a big hardscaping/landscaping project, and wanted to refresh the look of the gardens. A member of the leaseholders committee wanted to bring in a gardening company they had used on other properties. The part of my pitch that persuaded them to renew my contract? Over the past six years I’d replaced my ICE hedge trimmers, mowers and strimmers with commercial grade, battery powered tools (Ego and Greenworks Commercial). No emissions and much less noise. The competition were still using petrol.

I bought a Stihl HS45 a few months back the old one I had was great (made in Germany) the new one (made in china) absolute piece of shit forever pulling to start the dam thing... Any who I've just bought a husky telescopic batter hedge trimmer with the decent battery's it's a game changer makes the job so much easier not forever pulling extension poles off and on
All you professional gardeners need to stick with your petrol gear, electric, let it be forced on you by government, I believe in California they've given cash incentives to replace their petrol tools, hopefully,when the time comes you'll be offered similar financial incentives.

I use a makita DUH751 it’s battery but wow what a machine. Different cutting positions and speeds and cuts so well and thick branches as well.

All you professional gardeners need to stick with your petrol gear, electric, let it be forced on you by government, I believe in California they've given cash incentives to replace their petrol tools, hopefully,when the time comes you'll be offered similar financial incentives.
