Dictatorship VS Monarchy | What is the difference between a Dictatorship and a Monarchy?

  • In this video we look at the difference between a dictatorship and a monarchy. We start by looking at an overview of the two government systems and general definitions of each. Then we look at the similarities between the two, that both are a single person that is the head of state and that they can (in an absolute monarchy) have absolute power in their ruling. Then we look at their differences. The first difference is when they appeared. A monarchy is one of the oldest forms of government. Another difference is how they preserve power. And lastly, by how power is passed on. Both types of governments exist. For dictatorships, North Korea has had a dynastic dictatorship. For monarchies we looks at the example of the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

The only way I can become a monarch and change my country into a monarchy is to first become a strong dictator and then appoint my family as sole rulers of the land down to my very last successor. Sooner or later my dictatorship will be forgotten and later generations will be taught in schools that my family is a Monarchy and not a dictatorship. They will portray me and my family in schools as the great kings and queens. I will have to cut off my people from all social media and the outside world so they won’t know any better. It will be a long process and it takes a lot of scheming now that people are smarter and have the internet. In the olden days where there was no media, you could probably get away with becoming a monarch with a sword and a bunch of allies, you ride around the country saying I am your king peasants and kills anyone who disagrees. People who first sees him say, “what’s a king” then he simply says, it means that I rule all this land. So i have been building my house in your land? Yes you did and so let me tax you for staying here but don’t worry As your king I won’t let anyone take your house. See these men riding with me? They’ll kill anyone who would try that. just keep giving me this amount of gold per month so you can continue to stay in my land and be protected. And the man will say, thank you king. You’re the best. Now I won’t have to worry about getting raided by barbarians.

Right. Or you can loan money to a struggling kingdom and seize it when they can't pay you back.
By the way, i'm confused by that "dictators seize power with force, monarchs inherites power from their family", then goes on to say "North Korea got a dynasty of dictators".
Nobody even seized power with force in DPRK, the first Kim, Kim Il Sung was appointed by Soviet Union.
There's clearly some logical fallacy in that

@@giacomoneri1782Yeah you're right. North Korea is a basically a monarchy it just has the dressing of a dictatorship with the use of propaganda and being a police state. Similarly the British Monarchy, suppressed and invaded many counties and yet they aren't considered evil.

Given the monarch supreme authority, would probably end in a monarchy based off of children for reasons or perhaps you want an elected monarch with limited power then you practically have a president who is just called a king or a queen what’s pointless the only real difference I can see is they may be an office for the rest of their life

Honestly, though anarchism is stupid, someone will always want power and that will naturally end in a state maybe you could make a state whose only purpose is to stop another state from taking its place but there are some serious hurdles. You have to get over such as how would this state get funds ,who controls it, and how does the state enforce anarchism all these questions might seem straightforward, but normal answers would just end at best some weird democracy at worst a military dictatorship I could think of some ways around this, but I think the state is necessary as long as humans exist what do you think?

Monaco is a good example of a monarchy that exists today. I think the UK isn't a good example as the power of the monarch has been massively reduced. I'd also argue that North Korea is more of a monarchy as its under a dynasty and the title is inherited, its in some kind of grey area though.
Dictators had and have more power than monarchs. Monarchs who tried to rule with absolute powers had their heads roll or got exiled. So those who say a monarchy is a dictatorship really need to learn their history. Their heads wouldn't have rolled if they had the absolute authority that a dictator has.

Soooo... what kind of monarchy did the byzantine empire have then? I hear it was an autocracy. You say the monarch inherits the throne, while dictators get it through coups d'etat. Well... the byzantines had it both ways. So what were they? :))
Edit: the byzantines or romans. Same thing, let's agree to disagree.

    • @ObliviAce
      @ObliviAce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, the byzantine empire was a monarch in whatever the matter was. You see, the monarch stays on the throne for life and in byzantium when a new king takes over through coup, they still remain king by *right* untill abdication or death.
In dictatorships, its not really like that. Dictators may actually be part of a political party which might remove them, or perhaps the dictator is actually a leader of a de-jure democratic nation but has taken absolute power through corruption (examples: belarus)
In monarchies, there is nothing like that. Its always "you took over as the king and you will always be the king"
In dictatorships its more like "you took over... How long are you staying?"

    • @ObliviAce

@@ObliviAce so it was a monarchy, an autocratic monarchy. I mean... i think Louis the 14th was the model of an absolute monarch. Which made me curious, since the byzantines, when still at their peak, had absolute monarchs every time. Towards the end, the emperor was barely a title. But for instance, Basil II was an autocrat. And while his rule was contested, he stayed in power for about 50years.so... does autocrat mean absolute? If so, why does the west see Louis as the embodiment of absolutism, when the byzantines had this type of monarchy long before? My mind just gets error messages because i cannot understand this problem :))
