First glimpse of underwater tunnel in Chennai Metro Rail’s phase II project

- As vehicles zip past one of the busiest areas of the city, the Adyar bridge, a 500-tonne gigantic machine operated by a bunch of workers quietly drills the earth. Under this bridge, tunnels are getting ready well beneath the Adyar River. In a couple of years down the line, trains will zip past these twin underwater tunnels and those driving their vehicles over the bridge may opt to skip the traffic and take a ride below, in the train.
The Hindu gives you the first glimpse of one of the underwater tunnels built by Chennai Metro Rail for the upcoming phase II project. Of the twin underwater tunnels created between Greenways Road and Adyar Junction, one tunnel constructed by the Kaveri tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been completed and the next TBM named ‘Adyar’ will reach the Adyar Junction (near Theosophical Society) by January 2025.

Excellent work by L&T. Kudos to Chennai Metro management. I travel everyday from Greenways road to Thoraipakkam for work and the effort put in by the Marshalls to keep the traffic moving and in order is a wonder to watch. Something the Chennai traffic police are not able to emulate.
Even better work by the western companies that invented and designed those tunnel boring machines!
Very challenging work and brilliant effort! Probably by end of 2029 it will b completed and will b opened to public ...
it should be open by 2026. not 2029
@lukecastellan8939 But plenty of civil work needs to b executed . Even elevated section will not b ready by 2026. Officially all underground section will be ready for public use after test run by 2028 end or 2029 beginning

beautiful city
Except when it floods!
Chennai ✨💕
So much work😅😅
Thanks to everyone involve in this project😊
Good 👍
EXCELLENT ❤
Anyway it's seems a very good project done by OUR GOVERNMENT. ❤😊
when ashwini vaishnaw is railway minister any can be achieved proud of our govt
@@BALAJIK-yt3kc It's state government initiative project. Central only fund the project
@@stephd7673 exactly and the amount central has to provide is pending for past 2 years this garbage bjp mongrels everywhere taking credit for what the stood as a barrier for😂
@@stephd7673 bro seriously chennai metro rail network the authority for the project is venture of central and state govt , they only took decision how can u say its state govt intiative , idk unneccesarily argue when its about country and my state development we appreciate the growth of tn and india together
@@BALAJIK-yt3kc you initiated like this happened because of central railway minister when state government take every step for implementing this metro plan. Central only funds and state do every planning and implementation. Give credit where it due. I am happy that central government sanctioned the fund quickly but its totally state government effort in this project.
Wonderfull 🎉🎉❤😅
GREAT
Indian Railway project ❤
Chennai Metro corporation is not funded by central government. But backed by Japanese government banks. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Marvelous metro for metropolitan madarasapattinam
WE SHOULD COMPLETE THIS TUNNEL ON MISSION MODE IF WE WANT TO BE SUPER POWER UP TO 2047
When's Central Gonna Sanction The Funds Needed For Trichy Metro ? No Incoming for south but just outgoings
As a tamilian and a medico at jipmer puducherry , i hearlty thank our central railway minister his honourable ashwini vaishnaw sir for making wonderful things possible , kudos to L and T group also
@@joshuabenjamin767 did any politician himself went and build any projects ? what the idea behind u ? to get 200 for daily life for your family from a particular family from gopalapuram or to get 2kg rice bag for converting peoples ? any minister can give or distribute public tax money for benefit of country or like few politicians who spend it on freebies and increase state debt
@@BALAJIK-yt3kc this what all you saffron colored id**** have in mind as soon as you see an Christian name 😂😂 “converting people” dumb*** that is all you can think.
Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw has been an railway minster only from 2021. Where as CMRL phase 2 work started in 2020 and soil testing and proposals was completed way back in 2018. So I’m not here to support the Kotturpuram (Gopalapuram is currently vacant for your kind info) or the other party which is puppeteer by your saffron central entity! 😂
Also In the same concept as you say, the money approved and sent from the central government is everyone’s GST and income tax money, not Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw your honourable railways minsters own bank balance.! So there is no point to thank and increase his PR, also if you had followed the news properly initially the central government did not approve the funding for CMRL phase 2 and the did it just recently.
So please follow what you preach, also please don’t have all this negativity around you about other religions and people. We all are basically Indians!
❤❤❤❤❤
Late but latest comfortable in future travel
please put a news., to finish the line between., mmbt., i.e, madavaram bus terminus., to cmbt. soon., so that., madavaram, total north chennai can travel., to.airport through metro
and also to connect with wimco metro, via manali., to milk colony metro., so that., a ring route of metro can be connected.
please review new madavaram mmbt terminus., sir., first floor of mmbt terminus., is just locked simply, where waiting hall with toilets and bathrooms., are there for passengers.
and pharmacy etc., are in first floor.,
are simply closed.
passengers coming to , chennai from andhra., tamilnadu are facing difficulty., especially in night time.,

also., all buses to tamilnadu., should start from madavaram., will reduce., traffic in kilambakkam.
kindly ask the cmda authorites., there., to open waiting hall. in first floor.
Thanks to EPS for ensuring just such a massive project was envisioned. ❤ we don’t give him enough credit phase 2.

Engineering...
Fancy things, trams, local trains are more economical
Can anyone with engineering knowledge tell me why in Indian underground metros two parallel tunnels (twin-bore) are built instead of a single tunnel (single-bore) like they do in French metros? Isn't it cheaper to build one tunnel instead of two parallel ones?
Indian metros often have to deal with complex and diverse soil conditions, including soft clay, silt, rock, and water-bearing strata. Constructing a single large tunnel in such conditions can be more challenging and riskier than smaller, twin tunnels. Smaller tunnel boring machines (TBMs) used for twin-bore tunnels are easier to operate in varied geologies and are less prone to settlement issues.
@manojmanz2937 ooh okay, thank you!
Still no proper pavement for people, parking places which are all essential. This doesn't define the improvement in infra. When the people.started walking on pavements instead of road means true development of city.
do we really need underwater metro
What do you mean?
Mrlogy exactly my thought also ,why don't we give this land as waqf to poor muslims 😢
Druv tatti😂😂
we need a metro, under water over water and everything depends on what lies on it way.
What negative consequences does it cause? Stop being mindlessly anti infra
Like japanese anime 😮
😂😂
wth does this mean there's nothing anime like here??
@vijaysharan5735 just like copy of japanese tech
TN government consider chennai only tamilnadu.
Coz you don't have the need of metro in other cities
@pranavvikraman1450 even roads also huh ??
Correctly said
@@bisyguy That's a valid point of course. Even in Chennai, we need to put more roads. Also it's because of lack of money with the state government.
its central govt project
Using superior western technology, the boring machines are German, the tunnelling engineering know-how is British who pioneered these skills in the 19th Century!!
India benefits from western innovations!!
As if they r doing it for free
the west lived of by leeching off the subcontinent during the industrial revolution and the world wars. now we are just using the ideas thats already been used all around the world.
@@arangavinayagam That's not the point! It's India benefitting from the inventions and innovations of the west!
Yes , innovations funded by all the money that were looted from India😂 Everyone is benefitting from Someone else's innovation. Atlast what matters is the humanity should thrive.
@@mugunthanparahalan2645 Nonsense, India has been independent for 77 years, it's had plenty of time to invent and innovate itself but it's suffered from endemic corruption, bad governance, paranoid protectionist policies, and allowed its population to double TWICE in the space of half a century! If you want to talk about 'looting' then talk to your endemically corrupt political class who have stolen most of your money, or your dodgy Indian businessmen like Mallya, Nirav Modi, or Subrata Roy who rip off Indian banks with impunity!
Irrespective of how those western innovations were funded, it comes down to having those ideas in the first place and Indians simply didn't have them, mainly because they were too diverted and distracted by backwards religiosity and superstition! Also, India was foolish by 'hitching it's wagon' to the Soviet Union after independence when they should've hooked up with the US and NATO, then they would've benefited from more infrastructure, more investment, better technology!
Mumbai wouldn't be Mumbai without the Brits, it was their technology and engineering skills that reclaimed the land and made seven islands into the land that we now know as Mumbai! It simply didn't occur to Indians to do it themselves, and besides they didn't have the technology or know-how!
Stop whining about a past you can't change, focus on the future, and perhaps consider not breeding so much! Sigh.
Inconvenience today for a better tomorrow 🫠
