I love your information. You move pretty fast, and more explanation for the rational behind your statements would be helpful. Also, it's extremely hard to digest new concepts with that irritating music in the background. I was really struggling with it.
I can see how a DNA circle like the one you show at 14:50 could be helpful. Unfortunately, I only ever had one DNA circle and it only connected me with two other cousins.
Frank - I had a similar situation early on. If you have a tree out about 4 generations and your in side the USA where DNA tests have been mainstream a while then I would recommend the verifying tree and color coding videos. I had a handful of DNA circles on my mothers side and nothing on my fathers side, it wasn't until i went investigating that I found out why. I had a different biological lineage than what i thought and what my tree was in ancestry so it didn't match any DNA circles. This is potentially a red pill / blue pill moment (matrix reference) so I don't want to make it seem light but also don't want to alarm anyone either, However ---- Warning: there are some potentially life changing results ahead. Hopefully your just in the DNA circle not updating situation, but if its a lineage change it can be a shock. I know it was for me, BOTH TIMES! my Father and my mothers father! It was those experiences that prompted this channel's creation. DNA circles have been glitchy, but typically you will have some if the names in your tree match other peoples trees whom you share DNA with. Could be just your tree branched wrong, could be ancestry just didnt update for you and glitched, or could be the line you have other than the cousins, do not match other DNA matches. I was like you, thinking, where are my circles? I kinda ignored that for about a year, then alot of close DNA matches showed up in my match list that i couldn't reconcile, once i built a new tree i got more on both my mothers side and my paternal side. hopefully its just a glitch, but the only way to know for sure is using the DNA match list for verifying.

I think this highlights one of the advantages of DNA Circles over Thrulines, and that is the ability to find people whom you may not share DNA with but are genealogically related to. It is one of the reasons why we are told to test siblings, because they can inherit different bits from those even further back. And I really think using ThruLines and DNA Circles together will help so much. As far as Tree Tags, I like them, I have been focusing on using them for my DNA but I don't use the DNA Match tag. I have access to 9 kits. So whom is the DNA match to. What I have been doing is making custom tags and so my one is DNA Match SDC. And as work with different branches I put in the DNA match to whomever's initials. I understand why Ancestry does that but I don't want to 'mix-up' matches from my mother-in-law and my half-great-aunt. Also, I want to track if there is overlap. I just recieved my maternal grandmother's results two days ago and today will be the first time I can really look at them. I have long suspected that some matches may be related to me through more than one grandparent and I will be able to track that now. Just some additions.
wow you were able to test your grandparent, that is awesome because there are about 40% of matches that drop off per generation so you parent got you 40% more and your grandparent will match 40% above that, that is incredibly helpful on those distant lines! Plus you can establish patterns in each line which is also hugely advantageous. The family line sorting with the grandparent is going to help you so immensely! Do you have any custom tags? If so how many and what are they? I think with your experience with so many tests you may have some treasures for the rest of us to use!

Even before I have gotten the results of my grandmother I have working with my matches and sorting them out by sides. What I really need to do is filter my matches by grandparent group and copy my notes for my matches into them for my grandparents (or their siblings). That will help me when working with their matches as I will also have what branches some of them are in to help with shared matches of my grandparents. I had been using Crista Cowan’s hack of using colored emoji’s (hearts) for separating into different family groups. I think I am going to keep them because they stand out more than the dots. Before the tags I had been putting in my Rootsmagic custom facts for DNA and would put in Common Ancestor, DNA Connection, and DNA Match to XXX. And if they were a DNA match I would make a separate one for each person they matched to. More or less I am going to copy that into my Ancestry tree using the custom tree tags. One of the tricks I do is to have RootsMagic open at the same time and as I am looking though the pedigree tree on the matches page I check to see if that name is in my tree (and if it is in the right branch) I suspose you could do that with another tab for ancestry but I like having the two programs (and a second monitor) for that. I have found more than one match that way. I had one where I had his grandmother’s married name was in my tree (from an obituary) and so I messaged him with that and it turns out his grandmother (99) vaguely remembers my grandfather. I think just searching your tree for the names helps you not focus on the surnames in your pedigree. Of course that is only helpful if you have done at least some descendent research. I also put in my notes who the common ancestor(s) and through which child and if it is a daughter the last name of whom she married. I know some people put the whole line and I have considered doing the same. I will also put (at the end) who they are straight cousins with no removed generations. So if they are my Nth cousin 3 times removed I would put they are Nth cousins with great-grandmother’s name. (I have actually had that happen, got to love generation gaps!)

If you are working on filtering matches and you get a match that you now have figured out what color-coded group that you want to put it in but you don't know where in your matches list it is (since that is currently the only way to put matches in a group). This is what you can do. Star the match and the go to your matches list, filter by starred and change the group from starred to your color-coded group.

my basey story line stopped at the 3 brothers in 1645, however, there are trees that seem to have gone farther back on it, but i dont know if legitimate or not. It is not quite true that the map brings up all 4th cousins and closer, they only show if they list their location on their profile, which most people don't.

You went on to explain that James Larkin McFarlin was born in Kentucky and died in Oklahoma, and that he lived in Dunklin, Missouri for a while when he had his daughter Cora. Are you sure about this? James Larkin McFarlin was born 27 Nov 1860, and Cora was born sometime in 1873. James Larkin McFarlin would have been either 12 or 13 when Cora was born. It seems more likely that James McFarlin, born 1832 in North Carolina, was Cora's father. He would have been about 41 when Cora was born. James Larkin McFarlin was likely Cora's brother.
I am sure, there are some incorrect dates around coras birth year out there Cora was actually born later ( not at computer but I believe the correct year was approx 1883 not 1873 James was married to Martha and Sarah Taylor at same time They found out and he asked them to live together to which Sarah told him no Martha suddenly died young (hmmm) and he left Missouri to live with Cora his daughter (1910 census) After this Sarah and he got back together and they lived in Oklahoma till their deaths Sarah and daughter Dollie related all of this to granddaughter ( who is 88 and alive to relay this to me) Cora died without knowledge about her mother which may or may not have been Martha The information in this tree is dirty ( instate that on my profile page) as it was a part of the multiple trees created in triangulation of who my dna surprise father was Different people had bits, much wrong ( like dates here) but enough pieces and clues in each to eventually piece together ( this is why I believe that if people make trees private and unsearchable before corrections then it prohibits others from doing that work. Without these mistakes in trees I would have never gotten enough overlapping pieces to make a master tree and figure out who my father is (was). Their are several mcfarlin lineages out there with some connecting for some really loose reasons (guesses). I have been able to disprove a few of this guesses with dna. I am not totally convinced James mcfarlin is indeed that name He may well have changed names to avoid a wife the preceded both Martha and Sarah who may be coras mother Are you kin to this line ? Or just observant and caught that error in my tree? 🤓
