I do think the idea that the idea that the Knight doesn't know about the Roaring and using it for escapism shouldn't be discarded too easily. The game's premise of "Your choices don't matter" has always had the implicit follow-up of "because your actions don't have meaningful consequences"
So having an example of "All choices matter, and you don't control the consequences" would narratively make sense.
Plus, we'd likely still have some sort of antagonist in the Angel/Angel's Heaven/Roaring Titan/Gaster that could serve as a more straight-forward villain, while also upping the scale of the fight far beyond what any regular Lightner could possess.

What I met to imply by switching to "The Knight is being Manipulated" is, that the knight is the way you described. It's just the only way for that to be true and also for them to be called the "Roaring Knight" and trying cause the Roaring. There would need to be somebody manipulating them into doing it.

Actually you missed one detail about the knight that we know for sure. They have at least one hand.
The hand of the knight draws near.
This we can conclude Jockington, Snowy, Onion san, and other characters without hands can’t be the knight.

Your point still stands but I do feel the need to clarify that is a line from jevil, not queen.
Queen does also make reference to the knights hand in a different line though (I think) and uses a hand in her visual representation of the fountain being made.

It’s possible the knight might end up like the Masked Man of Mother 3. A pawn controlled by the overarching antagonist that pulls needles out of the earth to summon the dark dragon, much like how the knight pulls fountains of darkness out of the earth.

    Is your Escapism candidate Alphys?
She's my pet Knight Theory... She has a lot of concepts which seem to parallel these themes in her own way, especially in this world where she is not an accomplished scientist and is instead a teacher desperate for approval from her own students and pretending to be a high schooler to post anime reviews.
Alphys' life seems not great, as aside from her much less accomplished career she lives in an apartment so isolated that she pretends to have a cat, and has no Mettaton nor Undine in her life and so her only confirmed friends are Asgore and Toriel (On opposite sides of a divorce and bearing life issues in their own right.) She'd also presumably know Rudy if she knows those two, so if she has a third friend he's dying in the hospital.
So she would have a motive for escapism. But we also see her engage in it a lot - She is notably obsessed with anime and video games and the like, seems to involve herself in fandom circles as she has kissing anime boys as a background, and as mentioned pretends to own a cat to have a sense of belonging.
Adding to that, Alphys is... Unusual in being someone who lies and misrepresents herself, both in this game and the previous one. She's not malicious about it typically, but tends to do this to seek approval - Living that lie that there is nothing weird going on in the True Lab, or maintaining teen anime reviews into her 20s.
As such, of the adults, she's probably the most tied to escapism, in that respect.
We could also bear in mind her role in Undertale - someone who harbours a lot of the dark secrets of the setting through the True Lab, and who discovered Determination and ran experiments with it. Determination in Deltarune is a different concept, seemingly, and involves dark worlds... I dunno if that's a thing we should pay attention too. But that's getting way out of the realm of escapism, here.
Alphys is the type who could be lead by others as well. There's even a line in Undertale where she discusses alternate universes, and says that in one there is someone who finds her cool and interesting... That seems relevant here, in this game in an alternate universe. I think if she met a darkner who told her she was special and had magical abilities in this RPG Isekai World where all her dreams could come true, she would gladly act has his knight just like Berdly did.

    • @Arcanist_The
      @Arcanist_The 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Honestly that'd be really interesting choice. I don't really like Undertale character being a knight but Alphys would be a really cool option. Especially since she already has a minor but notable role in Deltarune as is. So I could see it work.
Tbh Im surprised her and Mettaton aren't more speculated knight candidates, since they both could work narratively. Then again, when it comes to Undertale Knights everyone flocks to Papyrus.

    • @i010001
      @i010001 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Arcanist_The
She's underrated! I will openly admit that an Undertale character as the Knight may be a little odd and is a knock against every character, but Alphys is... In a bit of a unique position I think.
There's a lot of peculiarities I didn't mention here since I was mostly talking about the escapist elements of her character, but looking at her in other ways seems to have a few other things which are of note... I mentioned she is likely a friend of the Dreemurs since before the divorce, which means she has known Kris for a long time as well; as a high school teacher, she may have taught Dess. Despite being unassuming, she seems connected to the main cast a lot more than what is obvious.
She designed the NEO body in Undertale, does that mean she also designed it in Deltarune? And you look at the locations of the Dark World - they are all places she not only frequents, but could walk into without question in broad daylight, and was within a short walk of every time we explore one. In Undertale, she is one of the few characters we never fight at all - That means of the Undertale cast, she is the one fight we could encounter which has totally open design space with no preconceptions. In one of the Undertale Alarm Clock discussions, she notes that being cold makes her 'start moving and talking in slow motion' which could just be a lizard thing but... Is notable, considering. And so on - If you start looking at her with the idea that she could be the Knight, stuff... May begin to be suspicious.
Mettaton is an interesting one, I've never heard that one before. Especially given his name is like... Just really oddly similar to Metatron for no obvious reason (Metatron is a famous angel who is inexplicably named like a Transformer.) He's a reclusive ghost in this one who considers himself a nobody, and never self-actualized in the same way as in Undertale. Thinking it through, then, I could see that being similar in themes of wanting escapism.
Now that I think about it, he lives with Mad Dummy and Napstablook, yeah? I suppose that could put him in a position where he was at the periphery of whatever caused Asgore to step down.

Great vid, hope you make more :) I really like the idea that the knight is being controlled like how Kris is being controlled. I wonder how far that similarity could extend? Maybe the knight has a soul like ours? And maybe they can pull it in or out like Kris can? Some people speculate that Kris intentionally gained our soul after making some kind of deal, so I wonder if it's the same for the knight as well -- maybe a part of them actually wants to be controlled, because it gives them power? That would make the control crown a nice bit of foreshadowing. Something that gives you power but also takes it away.

      @SkeletalBozo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think that the Knight is most likely a warped mirror of Kris, a blade wielding Lightner that remains isolated and is being controlled by an outside force. Potentially, with how Flowey parallels a No Mercy Player, this game is setting up two parallels. The vessel and the hand that controls.
The Knight may parallel an endgame Weird Route Kris.
And the Player is paralleled by…

Part of me has the doubts of Gaster being the villain given he seems to be rather cordial and more a neutral observer/beneveloent behind the scenes figure than some malicious mastermind. I also do believe whoever controls the Knight is the same voice who disccarded our vessel, and unless Gaster is playing mindgames with us why would he tell us to create something only to discard it.
That said, if Gaster is the Knights puppetmaster, that all but confirms Dess Knight imho. Considering Dess is trapped in the code and exists outside the game, just like Gaster does, and thus have some kind of connection.

While his motives make sense (especially with the escapism theme) and Sas comments of us "meeting the brother" could be setting him up to play a role in the story, I heavily doubt Toby would use an undertale characterinstead of the new characters. Especially one who is so disconnected from the core narrative and the meta-plot Deltarunes story seems to revolve around. Which I think will be the key to solve the Knights identity.
Speaking of which, there is a Knight candidate i feel is somewhat slept on. One who matters both for the emotional narrative and the meta/Gaster narrative.

Another Deltarune Theorist to add to the collection.
The Knight being controlled and Serving as a potential parallel to Kris, and the puppeteer to us, is a cool concept.
Because you know that at some point, the story is slowly going to have to more directly tie in the part of the narrative we touch on in regards to the mysterious individual that speaks to us in the Goner Maker and Game Over screen. And this could be a potential vehicle for that.
Because like how do you explain and properly sell Gaster to an audience who has just played Undertale once and never seen any of the FUN events or deeper lore regarding that? So I have always wondered how Toby will execute that.

All this video does is convince me even further that Holiday Knights (ESPECIALLY Dess Knight) is the most likely option for Knights identity, given they fit almost all of these motives. Which is good because they are my Knight forerunners.
Especially the last one: If knight is meant to be the vessel of someone (most likely Angel) that pretty much makes the Knights identity all but confirmed to be either Dess or vessel. There also can be multiple "Fake Knights". What do i mean by that?
There couple of characters, that has similarities with The Knight, and some has really good desiere to actually make dark fountatin.
Bacause this, and because the whole nature of the Dark World, reshaping reality to will of this person, i think multiple persons actually can be 'mistaken' as A Knight.
But that doesn't mean that they are 'Not knight' in narrative perspective.
All those different themes could be a one of possible motivation of those Knights, and you can explore every one of them.
But final, i guess, could be FREEDOM theme, because that something tiesing us in very very begining.
When we have "freedom" to create our own Vessel, and then, it will discarded. On Purpose.
So there alredy a "being" or a "force" that take away OUR FREEDOM. So main goal for the player, will be to Restore it.
Who or What take away our Freedom, would be One and Only "The Knight" Main and Final one.

something i've been considering lately is the idea that the Knight is aware of the Roaring, but they don't think it's an apocalyptic event in the same way Ralsei does. and they might even be correct! it seems pretty likely that much of Ralsei's lore knowledge is sourced from Gaster (given the deltarune website wayback machine of it all), and i can absolutely see Gaster misrepresenting something like the Roaring to suit his own ends. maybe the Knight learned of the Roaring through someone else (the Angel being the thing that most likely fits the bill) and wants to cause it because they think it would be a good thing.
it is a little convoluted, but i also think it's possible!

G_ster uses Kris to make fountains, we then close them when it's our turn.

    • @GameJam230
      @GameJam230 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@SkeletalBozo I hope it lets this one stay. The core of the idea was looking at how Deltarune compares Light to Hope and Determination (this can be seen in the Legend when it says “It is a legend of light; it is a legend of dark” and “It is a Legend of hope; it is a legend of dreams”, as well as when it clarifies that the heroes appear “shining with hope”, and the first save file explains that it’s the light only you can see, the lyrics to Don’t Forget explain that the light is in your soul, etc.) and compares Dark to Immersion and Fantasy (again, the Legend, as well as dark worlds being fantasy lands, the Angel’s “Heaven” being very descriptive of a sort of “perfect fantasy world”, Don’t Forget again saying “the shadows start to grow” and “places that you know seem like fantasy”, etc.).
By seeing these concepts being placed against each other, it can be seen that the battle is not between Light and Dark, but Determinism and Immersion, and the name “Delta Rune” literally can be translated to “Change in what is set in stone”, or “Change the Unchanging”, which explains what OUR role in the story is. We have more light than any of them, because to us, THEY are the dark world. The question is, do we allow ourselves to be immersed in the story presented to us, or, like Flowey after realizing that everyone was predictable, do we treat them like pawns in our game, and determine our OWN end to the story? Deltarune IS only supposed to have one ending, but we were connected to “build a new future” which whomever (Gaster) connected us to it.
The point is, if WE were connected to them to change THEIR world, then perhaps the Knight is doing something similar. They can’t choose who they are in their own world, but perhaps if they make a NEW world, even an unaccomplished loser who acts like a zombie from a broken home can rise to the status of a respected member of the town, or even a legendary hero? Just take a look at the effects of each dark world. Susie goes from violent bully to close friend, Noelle becomes strong enough to stand up to a motherly figure, Berdly gets off his high horse, and the next chapter is ground zero for Kris’ problematic home and family life, and may even assist with improving the way others look at Susie.
With the door being left a crack open, I’m willing to bet somebody like Undyne or Asgore shows up, and if the latter, she may be of the impression that SUSIE slashed the tires, needing Toriel to come to her defence. That speculation though, I just think it would be narratively fitting for the pattern emerging here. Point is, every fountain involves a dark world that was carefully crafted to improve the lives of everyone who enters them, ESPECIALLY Kris. And, given Kris has preplanned the events of Chapter 3 BEFORE Chapter 2 (they plug the TV in between Chapters 1 and 2), which only logically makes sense if they KNEW they would make a fountain there, and they slash the tires in order to convince Toriel to let (make) Susie stay over, I think it’s quite improbable to say Kris only JUST learned that they could make one by the end of Chapter 2 like some say.
Nobody can choose who they are in this world because they all have the same amount of light, so let’s instead make a world that’s DARKER we CAN choose. But, if a fountain is made with far more determination than anyone else has- like the Heaven constructed by an Angel who lost her sister, possibly her father, and has a bad relationship with her mother- then maybe the heroes are doomed to fail. Maybe the legend ends with “the world being covered in darkness”, just as the game says when we quit from a game over. That’s the one ending. But, people in that world are not willing to accept that fate, and so we, a being of far more light than anyone else, are connected to “create a new world”. We are there to “change the unchanging”. When Gaster says “SHOW YOURSELF! DELTA RUNE!”, he’s referring to US, the one being that can do so.

@@GameJam230 This is exactly the kind of comment I like to read, and if you have the means I would highly suggest you make your own video. Like I said I think that Kris knight is on the table for sure and this is a super unique direction to take it in. The focus in on change specifically is really interesting to me, and I have never seen anyone point out that the word Deltarune could be interpreted that way. Over all super cool to see such an in depth theory and I'm glad that people are willing to share there ideas here and have conversations about them.

@SkeletalBozo Thanks! I’ve thought about making a video for it on an alt channel of mine, but I’ve got so many projects in the works and so little editing experience that it takes me a long time to do, and with untreated ADD it’s kinda hard to stay focussed on projects of that depth and length lol. Maybe I’ll get it sorted out, but until then it really lives in comments like these.

That is an interesting question, I've been wondering if the Angel is going to be represented as a character like Undertales Angel was. Or if in Deltarune it's going to be more of a nebulous force.

@@SkeletalBozo maybe there will be a fake angel and the real god-like figure Angel. The fake angel would be Noelle, which you could interpret as foreshadowed by the fact the Queen already tried to replace someone with Noelle (the Knight), but she failed because it wasn't Noelle's fate to become a fake knight, but a fake angel (she was also in a crucified pose on that scene...)

What if the knight is Kris?
And the real mystery isn’t who is the knight but why is the knight doing what they are doing especially if they know it’ll bring the roaring?
Here me out at in chapter 1 the tv is described as hasn’t been plugged in for a very long time at the beginning and end of it then inbetween chapters it has been plugged in. This will be relevant later.
The Queen said she never met the knight but just judging of their actions seen from some footage. Which the swatches were watching in that one room. The Queen uses a long human arm and knife as the visual for opening a fountain. Just pointing that out. While Kris also can go to the sink before school in the household to the bathroom sink and it’s said it’s not time yet. They certainly haven’t went to the chapter 2 fountain yet. In the light world it’s optional but the only one we can tell is undyne. By the end of chapter 2 Kris rips our soul out while under the guise of its now the time to wash our hands. Probably slash Toriel’s tires and Susie get invited and watch tv? And the plug was already plugged in the outlet even though it shouldn’t have how ominous. They watch tv and talk Kris wakes up opens a door, Turns on the tv into static, and opens a fountain. HOW CONVENIENT! To make it so it isn’t so personalized.
How much more interesting would it be to guess Why the knight is the knight versus who’s the knight? Especially since they’re in the heroes party?

Nice ideas! Recently I saw someone say Kris is absolutely 100% the knight simply because their opening of the fountain in their house was premeditated, as shown by them plugging in the tv and eating the whole pie between chapters 1 and 2 to set things up for the next night. That DOES seem to imply they may have known how to make fountains before Queen told everyone in ch2, and intended on making one, but I don't think that necessarily means Kris is THE knight... but the person making the theory said it was insane for anyone to think it could pissibly be another character, which I strongly disagree with. I highly doubt it would be possible to guess who it is this early on in the game, we do only have less than a third of it to go off of right now
...all that to say I liked this more open ended speculation!

I feel similiarly to you about Kris Knight. Yes, the implication that they knew how to open a Dark Fountain before us and intended to do it since at least end of ch1 is there. No, that does not mean that they have to be THE Knight. Maybe they enjoyed their time in Card Kingdom and set up the scenario to open up ch3's fountain, but the first two worlds still wasn't them? It's not really a certain thing yet.
If it is indeed Kris, this will probably be resolved in chapter 3, but for now we can't tell.

    * I have a theory that the titans from the Roaring are our SAVE files
    * Literally the ONLY evidence is we have three SAVE files and there's three titans, all with the save star as their face
    * I think to banish the Angel's Heaven and end the Roaring we have to destroy the titans, which in turn resets our SAVE file and destroys everything we worked so hard to achieve (hence also the "only one ending" Deltarune was advertised with initially)

I'm not even sure that the Knight knows about the roaring. There is a non zero chance that it's a "roaring knight" because he's a lion.
I think we have one more data point to look at, knight has to be somebody who can be in a school without drawing attention.
Coruse, you also have to accept that I think there's a 1% chance the knight will be a small white dog with a guilty expression.

"A darkner influencing the knight". All this is making me think the prophecy is BS and Ralsei is playing both sides. Ralsei's dark fountain is the first one opened, and Ralsei benefits greatly from sealing the Dark Fountains by gaining more followers and the SOUL becoming stronger.
That said, I don't think Kris is the knight and Ralsei is the one telling them to open fountains. The reason being, whatever he discusses with Kris when the player isn't looking doesn't happen on a Snowgrave route, yet Kris will still open a Dark Fountain at the end regardless. So that was likely being preformed as acting on their own and not at Ralsei's behest.
I know 'Ralsei is secretly evil' theories are a dime in a dozen in this fanbase, but like, the fact that we still haven't had a Flowey equivalent in the universe yet (no, I'm not counting Asriel) is kind of suspicious, don't you think? Despite the rest of the Undertale cast having a counterpart in this world.
