This song brings back memories for me. The only time I actually had the courage to call my old man out was on Halloween Night 2009. The irony is he refused to fight me that night. I'm choosing to believe he respected me for having the willingness to stand up to him that night. I never had a problem with him after that. Of course, that is beside the point. Less than three weeks later, my old man dropped dead with a heart attack. He will be gone 15 years this coming November, and there are times when I still miss him. Godspeed, Dad 😢

I think the song is a metaphor for what it’s like to be a father. If you bow and scrape to your son and indulge him you’ll create a monster. Sometimes you wish pain on the person you love because you know they’ll come out stronger the other side. It’s not about telling fathers to hit their sons but more about the internal fight a father goes through when he watches his son struggle and lets it happen knowing that the worst thing he could do in that moment is to step in and save him.

It’s even better when you learn his father in real life was a golden gloves boxing champion.

I heard this song when I was a teenager in the 1990s, and again over 25 years later at 44 here in 2023. I didn't think much of it back then, but now I realize that the father was an odd person to get so mad just over a comment about being full of it. If someone were to tell you that you're full of it, it could mean anything, or simply just a joke in response to some topic you were discussing, where they could just be joking, and I think you would have simply asked what they mean, or maybe laughed it off and said that we all are. It's implied that the singer's comment to his dad wasn't even about anything, so I think the dad was ridiculous to act so mad just over a comment like that. Would he have been that same way towards his wife on their wedding night while she was still in her wedding dress and while he was still in his tuxedo before their sons would have even been born yet? Probably not. Maybe he was just mad that his son pranked him into eating a ghost pepper hours earlier.

The Night I Called the Old Man Out Lyrics:
The dining room fell silent, I can't believe what I just said
I just told my dad he's full of it and I watched his face turn red
Well, and I should've said, "I'm sorry", but I matched him shout for shout
An' I can still hear that screen door slammin', the night I called him out
And he said, "Son, it's gonna hurt me, more than it hurts you"
But somehow I couldn't help but have my doubts
'Cause I'd seen my older brothers crawl back in the house
Each time they called the old man out
Fist to fist and eye to eye, standin' toe to toe
He would've let me walk away, but I just would not let it go
Years of my frustration had led me to this night
Now he'll pay for all the times that he's been right
And he said, "Son, it's gonna hurt me, more than it hurts you"
But somehow I couldn't help but have my doubts
'Cause I'd seen my older brothers crawl back in the house
Each time they called the old man out
It was over in a minute and that's when I realized
The blood came from my mouth and nose, but the tears came from his eyes
And in memory of that fateful night, I know the greatest pain was his
And I just pray someday I'm half the man he is
And he said, "Son, it's gonna hurt me, more than it hurts you"
But somehow I couldn't help but have my doubts
'Cause I'd seen my older brothers crawl back in the house
Each time they called the old man out
Just like my older brothers, I crawled back in the house
The night I called the old man out

This is about a young man and his father having a scuffle. It's far too controversial for most mainstream music services. Now, if it were about drug abuse, killing people, abusing women, or suicide, that would be just fine.

I'm 44, and given how I'm probably around the age that the supposed father was in this song, if not slightly older, given how it's implied his several kids were teenagers, and some parents of kids that age are actually younger than me, I think the dad in this song was an idiot if he really got that mad just over a light-hearted comment about being full of it. It was a vague comment that could've been about literally anything. The dad could have joked with him back, or simply asked his son what he was talking about.
