    Fun video! I grew g basil at the beginning of the season with wonderful results. A friend told me a few weeks back about the health benefits of Tulsi for my goals, so I ordered and planted it ASAP. If the weather stays warm enough, I should have some to harvest in another couple of weeks 👊🏻🌻👊🏻

      How exciting! Tulsi is so amazing, and it's absolutely delicious as a tea. The flowers (unlike culinary basil) don't have to be picked off either, so you can just let it keep on growing. I hope you have great success growing it!

    Where can you get seeds for this? Can you grow it outdoors? I live in Michigan. Thank you for your time

    • @botanicallivingwithkim
      @botanicallivingwithkim  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! If you aren’t able to find pre-started plants locally, I would suggest one of the online seed catalogs. I know that “Strictly Medicinals” carries Tulsi seeds and sometimes transplants too, and quite often so do “Annie’s Seeds”, “Botanical Interests” and “Baker Creek”, just to name a few. If you do a Google search there are probably many more seed catalogs selling them. As for growing them outside in Michigan, I am unfamiliar with your zone’s requirements (born and raised here in Arizona), but I can tell you that Tulsi likes warmth. It will die as soon as we have a light frost here…it’s truly a Summer plant here in the desert southwest. So, you might want to start seeds in a pot indoors in a bright sunny window area…move it outdoors if your summer weather permits, and then you could bring it back inside if a frost or cold nights happen. I hope you give it a try. 😊

    • @botanicallivingwithkim
      @botanicallivingwithkim  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can make the tincture with either fresh or dried…if you have fresh, I’d fill the jar half way full and then cover with the grain alcohol, if it’s dried, I’d fill the jar about 1/4 full and then cover with the alcohol. Dried is more concentrated so it takes less of the herb. 😊

  • @Teremeng
    @Teremeng 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What is your drying process?

    • @botanicallivingwithkim
      @botanicallivingwithkim  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well quite often I use it fresh, but drying is also very simple. You can either tie several bundles together and hang upside down in a cool/dry location (preferably out of direct sunlight), or you can even use a cooling rack to lay several clippings on. There’s also great mesh hanging drying baskets that work great too. The biggest key is keep it out of direct sunlight, minimize temp extremes or dampness, and put it where air can circulate around the cut plants. 😊

    Do you want to wait until it flowers to harvest it?

    • @kimmontoya8789
      @kimmontoya8789 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can harvest it at any time. Unlike culinary basils, you don’t have to remove the flowers as it grows and you can also use the flowers…but no, there’s no need to wait for flowering before harvesting leaves. I just recommend never harvesting more than half of a plant. 😊

  • @marilynblake2188

    You say it is perennial where you live, but where is that? I've grown several other types of basil here in northcentral WV (zone 6 or 6.5 depending on which sources you use) and they are the first plants to die when we have our first killing frost, usually around October 10. I find it difficult to even get seeds to grow in the spring and usually resort to buying seedlings for transplant at my local greenhouse. Do you think the tulsi I grew this year, in our high tunnel, will sprout from the seeds that I know dropped? I am also saving seeds to plant in the spring.

    • @kimmontoya8789
      @kimmontoya8789 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello 😊 I’m in Scottsdale, Az…so that’s zone 9, and considered low desert. Most of my growing recommendations are for what I know does well here in the desert southwest. If we get a hard frost it will die back, but since we don’t get snow or ground level freezes, any seeds that fall will typically be safe and have a really good chance of germinating in spring (and for this zone that happens in early March). It sounds like starting with transplants is the most ideal for you in that climate…and so if you’re able to get them started yourself in a greenhouse or a grow-controlled situation, that might work great. Additionally, places like Strictly Medicinals quite often has Tulsi plants available online, so that might be another option. Kinda funny…this Summer we just had was one of the hottest and driest on record (50+ days over 115°, it was awful), and none of my Tulsi survived the heat. So I’m hoping some seeds dispersed and will sprout in Spring, but I also got a bunch of transplants to put in a pot right now (then I can move it if we have a frost warning, although we typically have days in the low 80’s and nights in the low 60’s during Oct and Nov here). I hope this helps a little and I hope yours grows!!

    • @kimmontoya8789
      @kimmontoya8789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The easiest way to preserve it would be to allow it to dry (you can hang it) and then save in air-tight jars, either crumbled up or whole. It’s also wonderful added to honey, or tinctured.

    • @kimmontoya8789
      @kimmontoya8789 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, if you got it from a shop I seriously doubt it because they don’t usually include the dried flowers (even tho they’re great to use)…but you can easily get seeds, and Strictly Medicinals is a great company for that! 😊

      @kimmontoya8789 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I’m not exactly sure what that last word was but I can tell you that when I’m saying TULSI HOLY BASIL, I am referring to Ocimum tenuflorum. This is the Latin name for Tulsi/Holy Basil. There are several varieties of Tulsi such as Rama, Krishna, Vana and Kapoor…and these are all in the “medicinal/Ayurvedic” classification of Tulsi Basil.
      Other Basils, such as culinary use basils, may also have medicinal qualities but that would not be their primary use (such as Sweet Basil, Thai Basil, both in the Ocimum basilicum category).
      Hope that helps!

    For the tinctures. Do you need to use 180 proof for dried herbs? I heard for fresh herbs you need the high proof but if it’s already dried 80 is fine

      Ok, so no, you don't have to use 180 proof for all dried herbs, it's just my menstruum of choice. A lower proof alcohol would work just find for the majority of dried herbs. :)

      80 proof to 100 proof is best no worries about ratios. Fresh plant matter also works best when using dry it’s more potent use dose with caution at first

      Oh thank you for asking…this Summer has been particularly brutal here where I live and I actually don’t have any growing right now, in fact I barely have any dried in my apothecary currently either. My suggestion for getting some would be as follows: for fresh plants, check your local nursery for seeds or starter plants or visit “Strictly Medicinals” online because they usually sell them. As for dried quantities and possibly even tinctures, check out “Mountain Rose Herbs” online, and if you live near a Sprouts grocery store, they generally sell it in tea form. 😊
