Sometimes I think Paul listens to this song at home and just chuckles about how much better of a songwriter he is than everyone else that he can do the goofiest song about a milkshake in the hardest way possible and show off his talent all over it
And, I know this may sound crazy, but I honestly don’t think he gets the amount of credit he deserves when people start bringing up the greatest Rock singers of all time. I rarely see him in the top five, and he certainly should be imho.
This album has become my favorite of Paul's post-Beatles works - he just did what he felt and let it flow with no expectations. Just a great showcase of his deep musical vocabulary.
This was a song Paul wrote based on his home life with his kids. It's all tongue and cheek, with obscure and whimsical references. Monk was a word he used with his kids to refer to Milk, so the Monkberry Moon Delight was a sort of fantastical sort of milk based drink or potion. It's a crazy song but so wild and hard and catchy. Note, there is an old joke about the tomato family walking down the street and the kid tomato keeps lagging behind to the point where the daddy tomato walks back to him and stomps him flat and says "Ketchup" (catch up). So the lyrics "catch up! (Ketchup), Soup and puree, don't get left behind" I think come from that.
The animal he's holding is a ram. Like the album name. McCartney recorded this entire album in his home studio on his farm in Scotland. He played every instrument himself, and did the production and mixing by himself too. Talented man!
You know what’s crazy about this guy is that he’s this eras Mozart. It’s hard to imagine that there is anyone else in the 20th and 21st century who could pull over 100 hits. Between his solo stuff, Wings and the Beatles you can easily put together an untouchable collection of music. He’s as important to modern music as anyone. End Of Story
I always get stick when I compare Paul to Mozart and bethoven but honestly he is a complete Genius and is so much better than anyone we have ever seen i truly believe that and will go to my grave believing that.
It’s really kind of unfair that Paul had such a huge variety of talents with ZERO training-just a strong drive, work ethic, confidence, endless love of music, and lots of practice in Hamburg when he turned 18. To have the voice that he had, the ability to play anything, the natural songwriting ability, amazing bass instincts (still one of THE greatest), absurdly charismatic temperament, powerful stage presence, genius intelligence AND be gorgeous as hell getting laid left and right with every girl he wants? You know what, I changed my mind-fuck Paul McCartney, LOL.
Monkberry Moon Delight meaning. From The Beatles Bible: So, monk was always milk, and monkberry moon delight was a fantasy drink, rather like 'Love Potion No. 9', hence the line in the song, 'sipping monkberry moon delight'. It was a fantasy milk shake.
For McCartney's skills as a rock-shouter, I recommend the Beatles tracks "Long tall Sally", "I'm down", "Helter skelter", "Oh! Darling", "I've got a Feeling" as the most intense. There are numerous others like "She's a woman", "Got to get you into my life", "Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band" or "Hey Jude" etc.
I agree. And most overlook Long Tall Sally, their most-played live song, available on Past Masters. The band's joy and tightness on the record are delightful.
I feel bound to let it be known that "Long Tall Sally" was originally a Little Richard song which he covered. If you don't know who Little Richard is, go listen to that goodness.
One of the main reasons why you never heard of this album is because Jann Wenner, the founder of Rollings Stone Magazine, was a fan of John Lennon. He started a campaign that favored Lennon and discriminated against McCartney. The mainstream media followed in lockstep and throughout the 70's and 80's McCartney's work was ignored or ridiculed...
Great reaction! One of Paul's best, which is saying something. Have heard it hundreds of times and am still in awe each time i hear it. Best vocals ever recorded by anyone.
This song was written for, & performed for *_his children._* That's why all the silliness throughout. No doubt he frequently performed for them & no doubt they were always highly entertained by their "silly Daddy."
OMG!!! My favorite solo PAUL song....such a GUSTY vocal by Paul....nice job GUYS!!!! Paul lived on a farm in the middle of NO where with Linda after the Beatles dissolved...(Linda on Backing vocals) Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is also KILLER from this record!
Thank y'all for doing this song. I was seven years old when my oldest sister brought this album home. I listened to this album over and over and over, and this was my introduction to great music. I always thought I was the only person on Earth that liked this song, but it is great to see so many people enjoyed it just as much as I did. BTW, this songs is on my playlist. :)
It's an insane song voiced by an insane character. I have no idea how he did it, but I loved him even more the first time I heard this song, the say I bought Ram.
I looked at the name of this song and I had a pretty big sized grin knowing that you were going to a different zone while trying to figure this out . .RAM is my very fav McCartney album ,it is full of awesome songs ..
One thing that I only found out recently is that Paul is the ONLY person to have a number 1 song in the charts every year from 1963 to 1988!! Be that as part of a group, duo or solo. No one will EVER do that again. Legend.
The baddest thing Paul did was pull together a very raw Wings, rehearse and record fun-to-play songs, and hit the road playing college bars. AFTER the Beatles! Imagine you're at the Student Union when Paul and Linda show up asking if there's somewhere they can plug in. 😎
I've loved McCartney all my life! Saw him just six years after the Beatles breakup! Brings me such joy to see you guys appreciate this after all these years! If you're interested... he has a massive backlog of music to check out!
The woman singing in the background was his lovely wife Linda McCartney! This was his second album post Beatles and after this album they created Wings with Denny Laine. This is my absolute favorite McCartney song and album and Linda compliments him so well on it.
Great reaction guys. My sister had this album, I was only ten but I loved listening to it with her. By the way my #1 Album of all time on the shelf between you.
The moment I heard this song I realized what an insane vocalist Paul is. Like, I’m not sure he can go to these places anymore, but the fact that he had so many voices and was able to use all of them proficiently is awesome. Ringo also had some pretty good songs in his solo career as well.
I liked the work of Paul McCartney when he sang in the Wings group, in 1971 after the breakup of the Beatles, the Wings group was created by Paul where his wife Linda McCartney sang and played keyboards, the group enjoyed stable success in the 1970s. 12 Wings singles were in the British Top 10 (one of them, "Mull of Kintyre", stayed at the 1st place for 9 weeks), 14 singles - in the American Top 10 (of which 6 went to the 1st place). Eight albums of the group were included in the top ten of the charts in the US and Britain, and in the US five albums in a row climbed to the top. Of course, Paul Macartney's further career was a great success, many hits were written, but I personally remember his work in Wings.
I parrot others, you really need to hear him on the Beatles Helter Skelter and Oh Darling if you liked this brilliant little ditty off the classic album RAM. Great stuff. Paul McCartney is on the short list of greatest musicians of all time. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Who out there that saw the 76 tour wishes he had done something from Ram? Maybe Heart Of The Country during the acoustic set? I love these guys videos!
@@lloydbraun6026she wasn’t a trained singer but that isolated vocal on Hey Jude you’re thinking of was a live gig and it was just an off night. That is not what she normally sounds like, especially on record. Paul knew how to use her voice with his perfectly
I bought this album when it came out in ‘71 and loved it at the time but it got some bad reviews especially from qRolling Stone magazine who were firmly in the Lennon camp post Beatles breakup. Paul had a tough time after the breakup and Linda pulled him out of his funk. This is the second album they recorded together and it is a gem. For me right up there with All Things Must Pass as the best Beatles solo album. Paul was energized and clearly not afraid to experiment and try new things with songs like this. Thanks fellas. I knew you would love this one.
I love the vocal range of Paul, this is one of my favourites for that, some other similar vocals of his you may have missed are, Long tall Sally, She's a woman, Helter Skelter, Oh Darling and Soily (live '76).
Ram was and is an extraordinary album and MMD is exemplary. You might hear him test his lungs similarly on "Oh Darlin" off Abbey Road. Personally it's not when he just goes balls to the wall but when he shows versatility. You might listen to Oooh You from his first solo album, merely called McCartney. The last two songs on Ram are extraordinary. He was a crooner capable of taking you back to a place you wish you'd been. "Long Haired Lady" and "Back Seat of My Car" bring nostalgic tears every time even though it's not a homecoming I'm fully familiar with. His voice makes it familiar because it exudes longing. So good!
Wow, La and Che, you have some great subscribers, and some great taste--MMD is an overlooked treasure that few know and appreciate. And, bonus: it's slang for weed. The name is based on his kid's word for milk. So on the surface, he's talking about his kids drinking milkshakes, but really talking about him and Linda smoking weed--yes, that's her on background vocals. "So I stood with a knot in my stomach, and gazed at the terrible sight Of two youngsters concealed in a barrel, suckin' Monkberry Moon Delight" At the end: Hey honey, try some of this! ::suck:: ::choked, holding-in-toke voice:: What is it? Monkberry Moon Delight! Your "dark carnival" observation is on point. McCartney's voice is indeed fantastic--he can go from sweet and pure, to harsh and hard. For more hardness, try Helter Skelter and Oh Darling. What I love the most about this is that--across all the years and changes--you get this music. What a delight, and a credit to you. So cool.
Not one I would have started with but Paul’s vocals are o/s. Also, I feel he never got enough credit for his bass playing. He is one of the greats. If you want to hear him at his best vocally, you must listen to the live version of Maybe I’m Amazed from the Wings Over America Tour. It’s really an iconic performance. Thanks guys, loved this reaction. 🔥
Hey guys, as a lifelong Beatle fan I just love your reactions to them and the individual stuff. Monkberry moon Delight has been one of my favourites, I laughed out loud when you said, ''That was dangerous.'' Great review. Have you heard Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey?
One of my favorite solo McCartney songs, showing his incredible range as a songwriter and musician. There are a lot of great solo albums from people who left successful bands. As much as I fretted when Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, his solo career way more than made up for what else he might have done with Genesis, and he could never top his work on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway as a member of a band. I highly recommend the title track from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway to pique your interest in that dense album, but I have to have some Black Coffee first. :)
Ah, you finally get to my favorite post-Beatles Beatle solo album. I love this, but it sounds best when the whole album is heard in one sitting. It's not exactly a concept album, but the songs tend to lead into each other.
favorite all time artist ..prince is second...but Paul is the best melody writer in pop music history aa well as a great bass player and singer...plays other instruments also
Ringo had some fantastic pop songs after the Beatles. They're just so friendly and catchy and it matches his attitude. Photograph, Oh My My, You're Sixteen. Yes that's his wife Linda and Wings formed shortly after this. Wings had so many great albums in a row. Tons of top 40 hits but also the albums were chock-full of gems. There is so much to explore when it comes to Paul McCartney and Wings. Band on the Run is just so iconic, but he had a ton of really wonderful hits like Junior's Farm, hi-hi-hi, Jet, Silly Love Songs, It's Just Another Day, and a whole bunch more including a James Bond movie theme song, Live and Let Die.
Hey La n Che from Ned in Spain. It was great to hear this again after a long while. I forgot how downright nuts this song is. I agree with you guys, about how amazing these 4 fellas from Liverpool were, together and solo. Each one finally had the opportunity to play their own songs however they wanted, free from the demands the Beatle hit factory and they went at it like, guns a blazin" ! I was trying to figure out who Paul was copying and found out it was Screamin Jay Hawkins ! Screamin Jay dug it and a did a crazy cover version ! You guys should hear his wild tunes like Frenzy, Little Demon, Do You Really Love Me and many others
Sometimes I think Paul listens to this song at home and just chuckles about how much better of a songwriter he is than everyone else that he can do the goofiest song about a milkshake in the hardest way possible and show off his talent all over it
I hope he does LOL. He enjoys life ;)
😅
My fave track of my fave McCartney album. If you havent heard him sing like this the you havent heard Helter Skelter and Oh Darlin with The Beatles
I mentioned the same two songs! 👍
And earlier, “I’m Down.”
Oh Woman, Oh Why!
@@Luizxsilva yes that too!
I think these are better vocals then those mentioned
There isn’t a human being on planet earth that can cover this perfectly. Paul was a one of a kind, and cannot ever be duplicated.
Pure McCartney tribute band got pretty close!
With the possible excepton of Screaming Jay Hawkins... McCartney was supposedly imitating (and exceeding) him with the vocals on this track.

That's a ram on the cover. The album is officially by "Paul And Linda McCartney'. And yes Linda is background vocals.

McCartney could adopt different vocal techniques. If you haven’t heard ‘Oh Darling’, that’s worth a listen.

Listen every song of this album this album is very good it's linda the back vocal the wife of McCartney
That is Linda McCartney his wife on background vocals.
He played all the instruments on this album. Wings came into existence a few years later
One of my favorite of Pauls. Jim
