  • In this Video, I give you a comparison of container growing vs garden growing. The pair of trees we use are the acer palmatum "Seiryu". Both trees are now 42 years old.
    The Seiryu is one of my personal favorites in landscape applications.

      good luck! Careful with seeds as you may not get the same growth habit and spring / fall coloration as a grafted specimen. Very often the tree grown from seed will grow much taller then expected.

      There is one variety of the "Seiryu"
      It has the same leaf form as the disectum (weeping) varieties. There are many variations of the weeping varieties, all very similiar with the same type of leaf form. The Seiryu is the only upright growing variety with the lace leaf. Glad you appreciate the video's! thanks

    I thought that these tree topped out at 15 to 20 feet in 10 years. Supposed to be one of the faster growing varieties. Guess the root pruning has kept them smaller.

    • @maplesandmusic
      @maplesandmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Dennis
      I have seen some taller seiryu 's but it all depends on the scion would for grafting. This tree can grow from a cutting but then you will encounter variables such as height variance, etc. Our particular specimens are grafted onto acer palmatum root stock and both were the mother trees that we have used for years to take cuttings for grafting of all our seiryu varieties
      Also if you do not prune the tops at all I did mention you can get a little more height out of the tree as well

    • @maciejgronowski
      @maciejgronowski ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. What kept them smaller is not changing pot for 20 years 😉.

    Otto, I just bought one of these trees today and found your post as I was looking at what I might expect from my little tree. Is your planter lined? It so what did you line it with and how many drainage holes do you have? Than you.

    • @maplesandmusic
      @maplesandmusic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None of our planters are lined at all including all pots and cedar boxes. In the cedar box we have four 1/2 " drain holes although with cedar boxes no drain holes are really needed as they are so porous with water able to escape from the bottom or the sides. Because the cedar box is built with separate slats of wood butted together water always has an easy exit point.

    such an elegant tree, I want to buy 2 to grow as well. but they seem to be slow growers. do you need to fertilize a lot?

    • @maplesandmusic
      @maplesandmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Japanese maples only require a little fertilizer when you are container growing. That would be mentioned in the video. I always mention not to fertilize if they are planted into the garden as it can really distort their growth rate / habit.
      They are naturally a very slow growing tree which makes them very desirable in smaller garden applications.

    Otto, it's a sad day for me. The wind blew last night and an umbrella went flying. It hit my potted maple and broke it totally in half. Is there any way that I can salvage any part of this plant.? I'm heart broken.

    • @maplesandmusic
      @maplesandmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear about that. Hard to give advise without seeing the damage. Depending on where the break is? You could just cut off the damaged section and allow it to continue to grow. As long as the plant is still rooted in the container and the foliage is growing above the graft it will recover in time.

    • @maplesandmusic
      @maplesandmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We generally do all of our root pruning in Febuary / early March, while the tree is still dormant. You can watch a couple of root pruning video's as well on my channel and I do discuss all those details

    I planted a Seiryu last spring and it only had a reddish fall color. It gets hot and humid where I am located. Do you know if heat and humidity affect the fall color, or is it due to the plant size and age? Mine is only 3-4 feet tall right now. I believe it was three years old when I purchased it.

    • @maplesandmusic
      @maplesandmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ron
      There are several factors that determine fall colouring. The age of the plant can be a small factor. More often it is the location and the amount of sunlight it receives in a day. Generally 3-4 hours of sun is really all it takes to bring out the colour characteristics.
      Another very important factor is the actual graft itself. Sometimes the mother tree that it is grafted from can give different growth and fall colouring as well.
      And lastly, the actual fall weather is a big one too. If there is excessive rain with limited sun it will alter the colouration as well.
      Not that it is good or bad, as in the end as long as you have a healthy tree, that is what is most important.

    • @rjayt88
      @rjayt88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maplesandmusic Thanks for all of the information and the quick response. The tree that I have only gets a few hours of direct sun per day, but that will increase as the tree gets taller.

    One more question, has your two trees ever bloomed any flowers?

    • @maplesandmusic
      @maplesandmusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have had flowering a couple of times but it is fairly rare. The flowers would then turn into seeds which you can plant as well. The weeping varieties often put out flowers in the spring and is much more common for them to do that
