Apple's First Computer Made Sold For 450 Times The Original Price (HBO)

  • A fully functioning Apple 1 hit the auction block last week at RR Auction in Boston and fetched $300,000 from an anonymous buyer - a relative steal for a highly coveted piece of computer history that helped launch a trillion-dollar company.
    These pieces of machinery are extremely rare because only 200 were made in 1976. Of those original 200, there are only about 60 floating around in the world, and an even smaller number, closer to 15, are functional.
    This particular Apple-1 was restored to its original, operational state by computer historian Corey Cohen. Cohen told VICE News, "Not only is this thing 42-plus years old, but it still works and it works as well as it did back in the 1970s." He went on to explain, "The easiest way to talk about the Apple 1 computer and where it came from is to understand a little bit about Steve Wozniak."
    Steve "Woz" Wozniak was an engineer at Hewlett-Packard in the calculator division. He loved computers and was invigorated by the innovations in computers entering the market. Using parts from the HP office, he began working on his masterpiece before taking it to the Homebrew Computer Club in Palo Alto to show it to some of the other members.
    His friend and fellow Computer Club member Steve Jobs loved it, and felt that he could use his knowledge from working at Atari to contribute some improvements to the assembly and production process. Jobs was sure he could find a way to sell them, and sell them he did.
    With the initial funding from Apple-1 sales, Woz went on to design the Apple II - a machine that would be considered one of the greatest computers of all time.

      cvc Short answer: yes

    • @kingselly9817
      @kingselly9817 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      cvc yes the only pros about android is they are cheap. I phones in my opinion have better quality, durability apps and features. My iPhone also keeps me connected with my friends through iMessage and FaceTime. Androids are embarrassing and slow. Plus I get a new one every time it comes out, with iPhone forever

    • @jeremyschep3589
      @jeremyschep3589 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's ridiculous. You can't say Androids are "slow," etc. when the hardware is so diverse. The Galaxy S phones are just as fast as their iPhone counterparts, and in some ways faster. And price is only the beginning of advantages with Android. Wider app selection, the perks of open source etc it's all preference based yes but there are several distinct reasons to get an Android (not to mention they're only getting better with each version). I'm not about to knock the iPhone...it's a great machine for the right people...but Android definitely has its perks that go way beyond price point.

      I used to work in an archive. We had recordings and gizmos archived from 50, 60, 80 years ago, and other non-electronic much, much older stuff. You can store things under controlled light, temperature, humidity, and even pressure, to make archived items last seemingly forever. I don't know about the theoretical limit of a capacitor's lifespan, but we had machines from the 1930s that still spun up and went, some from later years with solid state components. If someone got lucky with how they stored it, or they went out of their way to preserve it, that it works shouldn't be too surprising. What would be surprising is if the machine has more than a few hours of run time left on it.

    • @hanniffydinn6019
      @hanniffydinn6019 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nour depends on the quality of the components, older ones were of better quality. Also how it was stored. It's not as simple as its old therefore it's dead. You can see why original components are worth more though can't you ?????
