This one is a very tricky one. I have a friend who was born in SA to Malawian immigrant parents. I once I said to her "you're more South African than you are Malawian because you were born here, live and only visit Malawi occasionally, you relate to being SAn more than Malawian". She said no! Even though she's lived in SA all her life but she was raised culturally as a Malawian, she made examples about the food she eats at home, language etc... It's a really tricky situation but how are you representing South African women with a Nigerian name? 1st thing that comes to mind when one sees that name is Nigeria not South Africa. Being South African is more than just being born in South Africa. Which of our South African cultures does she represent? Motho wa teng when she thinks of traditional food the first thing that comes to mind is probably egusi hai bathong no.

She's a beautiful girl, and should be embraced as a citizen of this country, However, in my personal opinion, she can't be representing S.A as an individual in a beauty pageant or on a global stage. If she wins, we'll have a Nigerian representing our country on a global stage. The image of S.A should be represented by S.An's. There are no igbo or yoruba homelands or people within S.A, therefore she can't be representing a culture and people that we can't relate with.

Judges are usually western so they wouldn’t go beyond which area she grew up. But an indigenous blk South African should represent sa (it can lead to more work and opportunities). There’s hardly any blk representation when the pageants get international/ world stage. Plus some African countries pick whyte or really light skin ppl over someone who represents the majority of girls/ women in a certain country.

I have to disagree with you. Already you are starting the conversation by making a false equivalence between Rugby and a beauty pageant. Both these things serve different purposes and play by different rules. A Rugby league is about citizens from individual countries forming a team to play for the country they reside in. Don t get me wrong, you can play for your country of birth. You can play for the country of your parents or grandparents birth. You can play if you are a citizen of a country you weren't born in. But once you play a senior official game for one country, you can't change to another country. Those are the rules of rugby. That's why beast could represent South Africa in the rugby league. A beauty pageant such as such as this is different. It's not about the individual themself but rather what the individual represents as a symbol which is the country. Yes this girl is South African. Yes she's a second generation Nigerian. Yes she grew up in South Africa and can probably identify with our culture. However her name is the point of contention and what it represents. As much as she may be South African, her name represents a foreign identity to what this country is not accustom to. Her name alone is enough to rule her out of the competition because it's does not align with our identity which is what the contestants is supposed to represent. Yes it's not fair. Yes it's discrimination. But at the end of the day it's also the reality of the situation. She cannot represent RSA because we don't identify with her name's representation. Also resorting to calling South Africans Xenophobic really just distracts from your arguement and makes people want to not even entertain what you have to say because of the petty, untrue insults.

You bring up Vannessa Carreira Coutroulis which is a good case study. We do have Indian South Africans with their own culture and identity distinctly different from any other Indian in the world, and coloureds are South African and distinctly South African which what Tyla is, so bringing up other races and cultures which are actually South African doesn't take away from the fact that the tribe chidimma represents is not South African. The hypocrisy of it all, "Miss South Africa" as a platform is an international one. People from around the world follow our queens because of what they have to offer and the missions that they serve. Chidimmas identity and cultural background hold no weight AT ALL on an international level. Miss South Africa 🇿🇦 represents all people and that includes other African people across the African diasporas. To solely base the conversation on her roots alone is such a limiting and divisive way of thinking. Honestly guys you all should be ashamed, embarrassed and shocked at what comes from your mouths, because Chidimma would not be the first person who is first generation anything to represent a country. For us especially who follow pageantry, a few names come to mind (i.e.): Maria Thattil who represented Australia at Miss Universe 2020 as Miss Australia did so, so beautifully and honourably. She was also met with the same kind of apprehension by locals (with her being seen as not Australian enough) even though she was born to Indian immigrants in Australia and grew up all her life there. She understood the cultural landscape of the country, the rhythm of its people and how important it was for her to represent that and other minority communities who form part of a society that is a cultural melting pot. So, just like Maria. Chidi in the South African context cannot and I refuse should never be painted as being less then or not worthy just because of her cultural background. She was born here, she grew up here, she went to school here, her social life is and has been primed by South Africans and South Africa. She is South African - period - regardless of her cultural and ethnic background. And let's be aware of the state of our country, South Africa is home to over five million immigrants (from all over the world), there are kids just like Chidi who have grown up and only know what it is to be South African. Those kids also need to see themselves reflected in her, our country is way too progressive to be held back by such small mindedness. The world looks to us as a reference of diversity and a richness in inclusion. We seriously cannot be so proudly thick headed and go as far as nulling out an incredible woman just because "you all" don't agree with the circumstances of her identify of the particulars of her heritage and the likeness of it. It is honestly such a disgraceful mindset to carry as an African. Zozi is a Xhosa woman who broke boundaries and glass ceilings for young girls and women of colour all over the world. Her win as a black African Miss Universe was not only meant for South Africa and still today it isn't. She is cherished universally outside of her own personal identity as a South African Xhosa woman but as a black African global icon. In 2020, a South African Xhosa lady won Miss Universe Great Britain. She represented Great Britain incredibly despite this association of being 'foreign' and as a result of her impact earned herself a spot as a top 21 finalist at Miss Universe. The point being her the cultural identity of Great Britain was never lost but the world however got to appreciate its cultural diversity- all of this happening because of the kind of strides Jeanette created whilst reigning with said national title. In 2012, a South African lady born and raised in Soweto and early in her life moved on to the US. Represented the state of Maryland and became Miss USA 2012 shortly after Olivia Culpo won Miss Universe. She was celebrated !!! Ascending to the position of a national ambassador, is not only a cultural accomplishment. In fact Miss SA is not a cultural pageant. It is a leadership platform where young women of this country advocate for pertinent social causes and lead through advocacy based work and other various impact driven campaigns. Seeing as there's so much grievances around her (Chidimma) being a semifinalist, I think she's truly the perfect person to win and lead the conversation on how your daily xenophobia is shameful and harmful, how it denys her her own local identity and ultimately how this affects our nations social currency within a continent where honestly we as black people of it should be standing tall as one.
But the thing is ,these countries you mentioned are not the same , like our history is not the same .Dont forget that in South Africa people just got the opportunity to showcase their culture and be proud of it and people want someone who culturally understands them .that commonality of our history ,similar beliefs and very different cultures makes South Africa South Africa .thus is a national thing .and I feel that yall are throwing the word xenophobia around loosely.besides what culture will she represent which is a whole event within the contest . Zozi wore her Xhosa attire for example ,what will she wear .Nigerian attire? And why must she represent people that can’t relate to her none whatsoever .ms South Africa is not just dressing up and looking pretty . It’s also embracing the South African cultures and the people relating to Ms South Africa . There was a white girl who participated in Ms Japan and there was severe backlash because people did not relate to her culturally ,why should a white woman repesent Japanese ideals and culture .why must the Japanese culture be watered down just because she was raised there ? And America and Australia are countries that are built by many cultures becoming almost a unit .while South Africa is many cultures not combined still differentiated . Kudos to the girl for showcasing herself tho but I feel like she’s being unnecessary hate to herself fr .

Why are we always twisting the true meaning of the statement " South Africa belongs to all who live in it, Black and White"... conveniently, especially foreigners, twist it to mean they also have an indesputable right to be here because according to some of them, the SA Constitution gives them that right. For some odd reason, we fàil to find and quote the context in which this important statement was made and added in the Constitution of SA. The National Party totally refused and utterly denied the Black people of South Africa any right to call themselves SAns, hence the breaking up of SA into these many different "homelands", a badly thought out idea to push Blacks out of the 'real' South Africa in order to be able to refer to the country as White South Africa. And so it came to be that when the Freedom Charter was drafted, one of the first statements to grace that Charter was that "South Africa belongs to all who live in it, Black and White," in a defiant vow that South Africa is for Whites only as the Whites contended, and that Blacks have their own homelands. There were no foreigners at that time save only for the few who worked on the mines, and that Charter was not even meant to include those...it was a South Africans only affair between Blacks and Whites. So please, give context when you quote the Constitution...it is for South Africans only not for foreigners.

It was said in the video she meets the requirements to participate in Miss South Africa and that she is a South African… we are debating whether she should represent the country that’s a different question to if she’s legally allowed to.

The same prime minister who is implementing new immigration laws. Sending asylum seekers back home. In one TH-cam video it was said it’s funny that he is sending asylums back home but he is Indian. These new laws discourage companies from hiring foreigners, even if the foreigner has studied in the UK. If the company insists on hiring foreigners then the company will have to pay a large amount of fee.

Sesi it’s not a punishment 😂
By your logic, when i see "Tyla Laura Seethal," i don't think South Africa, i think Indian. Does that make her not South african enough aka identity.....When i see and think of "Vanessa Carreira Coutroulis" I imagine someone of spanish or Portuguese heritage but yet she was Miss South Africa in 2001. You guys are delusional. The black on black hate is comical here. The world is looking at you.
You conveniently left out the other two thirds of my logic... when you see Tyla Laura Seethal some will see South African and some won't, but if you look at Tyla you will automatically see a South African, if you listen to Tyla speak you will hear a South African...
Again, I see double standard here. What South Identity did you guys see in Vannessa Carreira Coutroulis that made her your Miss South African in 2001. What South Africa did you see in Sherry Wang who was also a contestant this year(2024) and made it to the top 20. Tyla's name is Indian and not South African. Yet, you guys claim Elon Musk, Doja cat, Charlize Theron as South Africans. Black on black hatred is disappointing to see here. You all forget that is the White man who divided us with these stupid imaginary lines to cause divide amongst us.
You bring up Vannessa Carreira Coutroulis which is a good case study. When you first look at her name yes South African doesn't come to mind, I went and checked out her Instagram, she looks and speaks like a white South African so she gets a pass based on my logic and yes we do have white South Africans they are a part of the country's history and a part of the reason why the country is what it is today. I agree Sherry Wang should not represent South Africa either as in South Africa we don't have Asian cultures represented anywhere and being Asian is not a South African culture. Stop conflating other issues Elon Musk, Doja cat, Charlize Theron are South African born celebrities it's a different issue to what is being discussed here.

For us especially who follow pageantry, a few names come to mind (i.e.):
Maria Thattil who represented Australia at Miss Universe 2020 as Miss Australia did so, so beautifully and honourably.
I’m not saying she’s less than a south African but I understand the protectionism being showed by the locals themselves .

The problem is the Black South African. They're so biased against this lady. Is an English name South African? Is a white South African of South African decent? But a white girl will be accepted. She's a proud South African by birth and so legally according to the South African laws. Is the identity of South African white? The defender of Super Sports FC Ime Okon should learn from this unwarranted discrimination.
One day we are going to see foreigners entering iNdoni competition
Haichivah Dayimani is half Nigerian and half Xhosa. Do we mean he can't represent the Springboks? That's wrong the world is changing
National Sports teams and national beauty pageants are not the same stop equating the 2.
In sport it is ok because it is not an individual that represents but a team. So it is a team of SAns based on citizenship. Thats why we had Mtawaria in rugby, he could not have represented Zim in SAn team. In soccer they do it differently, they do not include non SAns when they play international games.
Why couldn't Chidinma contest for the most beautiful girl in SA,?But most of the people with India, China , Europeans have won it in past years.
Even within these present contestants, there are many of them with Asian and European backgrounds but you are not disturbed BC of but you cannot hold your peace BC of an African sister that have a Nigerian and Mozambiquean mother. Why do we hate ourselves Africans. That lady was born in SA. She is SA citizen by birth.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw is half Zulu half English but she claim the English side of her. That's how the world is becoming
Gugu Mbatha-Raw is not likely to become miss England and represent England on the world stage. That’s how the world works
She has a south African parent, not 2 immigrant parents. Again, I doubt she would try to impose herself on the English and try to rep. them at a global level.
@@Peachcobler22
Chichi's mom is Zulu moss
Rainbow nation my foot
The will never be a Ntomfuthi representing nigeria
Exactly for me this is the biggest issue. Nigeria and Moz would never allow someone who is not of them to represent them, so why are we bending over backwards to let them represent us? She is not culturally SA, yes she has the papers, but she not like us!
HOw do you know its just a name we have Indians n YTs representing SA.
@@fredbantu3694it’s not just a name, and you know the host of SA , especially how Indians got to be here
@@Shai_Ntontela lol. Mostly because no South African in their right mind would ever emigrate to Nigeria. 🌹🌹❤️
@@AndreDMalan1966 + Because no South African has the mindset or whatever it takes to survive or thrive in Nigeria or any other place. No smarts whatsoever.
I cant accept a chidimma out there claiming to be south African. This is too much.
But there are Asians who are south africans mos
No Asian has represented South African as miss South Africa 🤦🏾♂️
we are not happy about it, this fake rainbow nation and fake Pan-Africanism was not an agreement between black South Africans and Mandela amnd it is only now that we can see how it is costing us a country and must come to an end
Bryoni Govender, an Asian, just represented South Africa at both Miss Universe and Miss Supranational.
She identifies as Nigerian. Her inta bio said it
If she was born here, then she is a South African.
Well well well, look who finally remembered their youtube password😂

Sorry SA. The fact that she was born and raised in SA from non South African family - Nigerian- Moz parent she is entitled to be Either any off this Nationality- SA-NIG- Moz. When in Acquiring citizenship u can be a dual citizen or a citizen of one country or more and u do see many US citizens with African or Jamaican parents but representing the US. Same thing in Canada u find sports men in Soccer representing Canada. France for crying ouloud uses almost 70% Africans in their football squad but represent France. Leave that Girl alone she is SA and has lived in SA since birth and do Speak any off our languages. The culture she knows is South African because it will be hard to be all three nations at once so she picked one which is SA.
100 percent agree!
The Ndebele people from Zim have names and surnames like the Zulus from here what do you say about that
We know how the people from Mzilikazi ka Mashwabane ended up north of South Africa, if any of them has a south africa I'd then she can represent us because one the Ndebele in Zim are still not received as Zimbabweans there. Long story short a ndebele woman from Zim understands SA culturally and even knows atleast one SA language.
@@thembaradebe7170 Yeah one of my friends was Ndebele from Zim and he just fit in with the Zulu kids we often forget he's not South African. And Northern Ndebele is a Zulu dialect so by default when they come here they know a South African language.

@patriciamulamba7069 if you actually paid attention to the video there are 3 things I used as metric to decide if she should represent SA… a South African name, looks South African, and speaks like a South African. Obama looks like a black American and speaks like one. Chidimma doesn’t look like a South African and doesn’t speak like one.
They attacked us when Amapiano took off and when Tyla surpassed their musicians. This is bad timing. Also if she wins any titles Nigerians will claim it as their victory.
Is this about competition with Nigeria? Which Nigerian musician has Tyla surpassed? Is it by winning Grammy? Can Tyla fill a 20k auditorium outside South Africa not to talk of 80k capacity stadium? Let's see if Tyla will be relevant in 10years from now.
Surpassed?💀
Mumu...is tyla a south Africa...tyla father is india...fools😊
Can i be indian just because iwas born there😂😂😂😂
Well... Indians can be South African coz they were born here... 🤷🏿♂️
I have know of a family from my hood, the father was from Malawi. They speak Sesotho like us they understand our culture, yes maybe they speak their language at home but there is no difference between us and them. Secondly is this lady from Soweto or Cape Town? If you guys questioned my identify on social media there would be a 100+ people who say we know this guy we grew up together from so and so Kasi/hood. Moreover there would be 20+ who say Themba is my cousin in know him, where are those people for Chidimma? If she was naturalized its ok but the Soweto/Cape Town story doesn't hold water if her friends from Pimville and her cousins are non existent. If she is naturalized its fine but tell the truth
She was born and grew up here

First of all, the Pageant is a private business and the main focus is about maximizing income earnings.
To promote your "Culture and Ethnic Heritage" you would have to start a different kind of "African Women Beauty" competition.
Imagine a white man who had immigrated from the USA to become a South African and marries a woman from Israel.
Would their Cape town born daughter, an Israeli Jew...Yes, you can only be a Jew through the mother, be allowed to represent your $outh African culture ?
South Africa is not like other countries in the continent, in the sense that others had fought for your freedom, especially the Nigerians and African-Americans, who sacrificed huge financial resources and global condemnation, respectively.
You should concentrate on giving your young generation good education to have a thinking population in the future AI world.
But its ok if its an Indian?
Don't mind them, their obsession with Nigeria and xenophobic nature will not allow them reason well.
I think my bra might be light Dudula member

being born in sa nd parents are not south african nd she is not adopted does she qualify?by law nope
Shes has Nigerian surname and she can claim to be Nigerian one day, we can't have half south African represent se t south Africa in a world stage with a south African. We must put south Africans first .
