Vlog 19 - Toyota/Lexus (GX470) Gear Selector Failure

  • The gear selector bushing recently failed on me while on a trip, leaving me stranded almost 2 hours from home. After some initial troubleshooting, I found the problem existed in the gear selector. Specifically, the gear selector transmission shift cable bushing failed. This resulted in the shift cable falling off the gear selector, rendering the gear selector useless. This video describe the simple/cheap fix and a tip on how to get yourself home when stranded with this issue. This issue may exist on several Toyota and Lexus models from the early 2000s that used this cable select system. Hopefully this video can help others in my situation in the future. Comment down below and let me know if I was able to help you out!

    After frantically searching for a way to get the vehicle moving again, simply saying this video saved me is a complete understatement. I was in the boat yard, hitched up, making final adjustments when the vehicle stopped moving and left me completely blocking the only pathway in the yard on a Saturday. Somehow found this video that enabled me to use my free hand to hold everything in place while I got moving again. Luckily the nearby part store had exactly what I needed and I was good to go. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
    Pro tip: One of the commenters mentioned stringing the bushing through a plastic zip tie and stringing that through the target hole. This made the job so much easier and took a lot of the stress out of possibly dropping the bushing into the proverbial abyss.

Could not find this info simply searching for "Lexus GX470 stuck in Neutral" My wife found this video on TH-cam. A real helper to solve the problem. Great commentary and video. I have a 2003 GX with 265K miles on it and this just happened to my daughter when parking it at work. It was in a space between 2 cars in a narrow parking area. Car stuck in P, not sure how a tow would have gone to actually get to the car and get it out but really did not want to find out. I do have AAA but they would not have been able to bring it up my driveway. I just went in and pushed it back on the shaft held it in place and was able to drive it back home. I ordered the replacement bushing on Amazon PRIME on a Wednesday afternoon, so much for PRIME 2 days shipping as it came Saturday around noon. it was ~$25. It was a slightly frustrating experience installing it but overall took me about 40mins to install it and get everything back in place. A few notes on the installation that seemed to help me. I of course took off the shift knob, the boot and the plastic surround around the shifter and the cup holder. After I did that I held the cable on the shaft and shifted it all the way down to the lowest point in "2". I then removed the clip on the cable that holds the metal mount in place. It is a U shaped clip that can be pulled out straight upwards. This gave a little more play in the cable. On my first attempt I thought I had the new busing pushed in but it popped out and fell down. Luckily I had a recovery tool that had a small claw on it and recovered it. With that being said I came up with another path to take. I took a long cable tie, you can use a piece of wire or anything that is small and bendable. I placed the bushing on it and then threaded the the cable tie through the eye where the bushing was going. This prevented it from falling down. After that I just moved the cable around and pushed the new bushing in. It went on the shaft fairly easily after that. $25 and 40 mins of frustration is a lot better than $600+ to the dealer for a new cable installation.

    Hello. I parked at home after a day of errands. Grabbed a snack. Then 20 minutes later was going to go again. Nope. 2004 gx470. Started, sounded fine. But wouldn't go into drive or reverse. Just sat thete. No movemment even when pushing the gas, got plenty of vvrrrm, vvvrrm. But wouldn't pop into gear. I did hear some grinding when I put it back in park.
    Its at the shop now. Towed. I'm on a very small budget. Does this sound like a possible easy repair? **FYI... I have a small brake fluid leak. Not sure if that's related. ***Also a fairly substantial (I"m assuming) transmission fluid leak over the last few months on the ground where I park my car. I assumed it was brake fluid initially. But now think its transmission related. Any ideas on the possible problems? And costs? Thank you in advance. Also, I am the only owner. Drove it off the lot 20 years ago.

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the delayed response! I don't think this is the same issue unfortunately. This sounds like transmission issues as you mentioned. I'm not sure of cost on that without knowing the exact issue. I'd do some research on a reputable mechanic in your area who does Toyota work and not a dealership. This will be a cheaper route while still making sure you are working with a mechanic who knows Toyota/Lexus vehicles well enough to do good work.

    Thank you! How did you get your traction control and everything off? Did you have to add a switch?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still need to fix a few of the emission issues that aren't hindering drivability. Once I get those fixed, the traction control lights should go away.

      @@Awesomoto Oh got it! I'm actually trying to figure out a way to turn it off on the fly. I used to have a 4runner and there was a plug under the hood I could pull, still trying to find a forum to figure out if there's something similar on the GX I just purchased.

      @@TannerRichieMain Wow, that would be nice. I’m not currently aware of anything like that, but also haven’t looked too much into it. Let me know if you find an equivalent plug on the GX!

      @@Awesomoto Hey man! Just in case you're curious, I just made a video on that plug under the hood on the GX470. Worked just like it did on my 4Runner!

    Bushing costs $30 on Amazon?

      Yeah, unfortunately these are expensive for what they are(rubber).

    How many miles do you have on your GX?

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sitting at about 152k miles. How about you? Wondering if you ran into this issue and mileage if you had it happen.

    THAT is why I carry AAA Premier-- 200 mile towing free and a LOT more services.. tires, batteries, lock issues, even locksmith with house issues.. :) It's $107 for the year and if you use it ONCE- it's paid for itself many times.

      I actually have AAA Gold and could have used that in a worse case scenario, but luckily I was able to figure it out before it got to that point...I was close to calling it though! lol

    Great vid, I would panic too - More $$ out the window would of been my thoughts!

    • @Awesomoto
      @Awesomoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spunkkat, exactly! All that was going through my mind was the tow truck costs and then transmission costs. The panic blinded me from the real problem at first. Thankfully I was able to get the vehicle home...and hopefully this video helps someone out that gets in my situation!
