He is Robert Picard and you do not doubt him in any scene. In the goodbye hug between Jean-Luc and Robert, the change in Jeremy Kemp's facial expression says without words, 'I love my brother, even though I would never tell him. I would equate what Picard went through as a form of "R" word. He was physically violated with the Borgs implants. His mind was violated with their collective consciousness, forced to reveal all of his secrets with Starfleet against his will. We're so used to seeing him as this stern, reserved, stoic, humorless man who keeps his emotions in check and well guarded and when he breaks down with his emotions flooding out of him as he recounts what he went through, its so devastating to us viewers. Stewart did an excellent job in this episode.

Robert knew that Jean-Luc had not only been violated but also had lost. Two things Robert knew that Jean-Luc hadn't run into in his life and certainly not on that level of loss and violation. Robert also knew that Jean-Luc was going to be mad and with reason. But because of his self discipline Robert knew Jean-Luc would have hard time dealing with it. Robert did what needed to be done. Get him half drunk and pick a fight. Robert allowed himself to be a punching bag to help his brother heal.

Theodore Bikel is best known as the Russian Captain in the 1966 film "The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming." IN that movie he spoke Russian for all the movie. He was an accomplished actor who could speak nine languages and sing in 21. He left Austria after the Anschluss (the German annexation of Austria) and moved to Palestine which later became Israel. After WW II he moved to London in the late 40s and the 1950s where his acting career took off. He moved to the US where his first American film in with 1951's The African Queen. His roles were primarily European heavies in movies, but his command of accents led to a wide variety of roles from the redneck Sheriff in the 1958 film The Defiant Ones (where he was nominated for an Oscar) to My fair Lady.

But I love him more than anything because our Mom and Dad are both gone now, and we both represent what our parents gave to the world. It's a deeply human thing. Gene Roddenberry hated this episode, but Michael Piller spearheaded that you can't leave off from The Best of Both Worlds and just have Picard be fine. There were arguments the show wasn't serialized but fortunately he won. Ron Moore (DS9 and Battlestar Galactica Reboot fame) wrote this gem of an episode.

RDM is one of the few in Star Trek who can write wonderful follow up episodes where prior actions have tangible consequences. I mean he co-wrote the script for First Contact, and that's considered the best of the four TNG films.
I'm glad DS9 became as serialized as it was, though being on a space station tends to lead to not being able to just warp away from your problems. It was nice that the status quo wasn't just brought back to normal because the credits rolled.
The fact that he left Voyager after only a few weeks because they wouldn't serialize what should also have been more serialized than DS9 lead him to do what he wanted in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.

I think Gene in his old age got a little paranoid about Star Trek losing the aspirational optimism of humanity’s ability to overcome interpersonal conflict. He was more like this with TNG than he even was with TOS.
He was, I think, obviously overzealous in this case, but if you completely lose that ideal, Star Trek turns into any old regular drama (which we’ve kind of seen happen with newer iterations). I can’t really be mad at him.

@@ModernEphemera Yes, I appreciate Gene protecting that which made Star Trek special, but what really made it special all along was its humanity. Even in a world where interpersonal conflict was mostly resolved, Picard would be forced to reckon with not only his family, but the trauma of what he experienced at the hands of the Borg. This is definitely one of the best episodes of TNG, I would definitely put it in the top 5, because sometimes it takes a while for everything to be "all right"

    • @ModernEphemera
      @ModernEphemera 7 āļ§āļąāļ™āļ—āļĩāđˆāļœāđˆāļēāļ™āļĄāļē

@@cloudwatcher608 I agree! This episode is one of my favorites of TNG as well, if not very favorite. For precisely the reasons you mention.
And we can see from TOS that Gene himself was quite comfortable with a little inter-personal conflict in that era. In fact, Spock and McCoy’s sparring is probably more confrontational than most of what we see within the TNG crew.
But I think some fans (not you, necessarily) can be a little harsh on him with how he interacted with TNG. There’s this image of him trying to hold it back from telling more interesting stories. And in some ways he did. But I feel sympathy for him, he was old and sick and trying to protect his legacy as he was losing control over it.
And he wasn’t wrong with the broad strokes of what he was saying. An aspirational portrayal of a team of kind, intelligent, and reasonable people who treat each other with respect is a big part of what makes Star Trek so special.

There is some limited truth to Robert's stance that Jean-Luc is arrogant. Trouble is, a touch of arrogance in a person of good character can easily cause him or her to have unrealistic expectations of himself or herself. There were other mental and emotional issues, but the one that was really eating him alive was "I couldn't stop them," along with "I should have been able to stop them."
Jean-Luc expected of himself the flat-out impossible. Stop the Borg from using your knowledge and experience after they've made you one of them? Nobody could do that. *Nobody.*
For that reason, Jean-Luc *really* needed to let go of that - and it took his Big Brother to rattle it loose. I think that Jean-Luc knew it, at least on the subconscious level - and that's why he went to see his brother. It's good that he realized that after their mud fight.

I think Best of Both Worlds is basically a three-parter, with this being the last bit of it. Apparently, there was a bit of a struggle to get this one to happen, as the producers wanted the show to be much more episodic, so it could be run out of order in syndication. However, this episode was really needed. Nobody could be shown to be over that trauma immediately, and this episode helps show that Picard is definitely not over it, and we can know that he's dealing with a lot under the surface.

Rewatching as an adult I see how important this episode was from a character perspective (Esp for Picard, knowing he craves his big brother's protection again, that really resonated with me and how important family is). This is something you really didn't see in TOS much except in the movies, and I appreciate it so much now, which is one of the reasons I âĪ TNG so much ðŸĨ°

The Worf plot is actually rather cute and we get some good Guinan bar tender wisdom thrown in there too. Great follow up to Best of both Worlds.

4:35 So there's a really interesting story to the costumes. That should be a film-era Starfleet uniform jacket, as seen in Wrath of Khan with the rank insignia on the white shoulder strip. William Ware Theiss was the costume designer for TOS and TNG while the costume design for the first 6 films and the prologue section of Generations (particularly the iconic red or "monster maroon" uniforms) were either directly designed by Robert Fletcher or reused his designs. Roddenberry wasn't a huge fan of how Wrath of Khan turned out, he felt that Starfleet became too militarized, and that included the costume design. So the TNG era uniforms represented a back to basics kind of thing, and Theiss' approach to "but what about the film uniforms" was, "pretend like they never happened."
By mid season 1, Theiss had to step down as costume designer due to health problems; he won an Emmy for The Big Goodbye. By season 3, new costume designer Robert Blackman was brought aboard, and Rick Berman tasked him with making a better version of Theiss' costumes. While they looked futuristic and heavily called back to the original series, the spandex costumes had elastic loops inside that put a lot of uncomfortable pressure on the back (especially for Jonathan Frakes who suffers from chronic back pain). The costumes were also made from heavy spandex, so they did not breathe at all, and smelled almost as bad as the cat feces in the hallways. After a lot of iterations that probably were hard to spot on camera, Blackman's modifications resulted in a 2-piece collared uniform that became _the_ TNG uniform for the rest of the series.
When Yesterday's Enterprise entered production, Blackman faced a difficult problem for the Enterprise-C crew costumes. He couldn't use the Theiss design, as it was too similar to his design for the D crew. He couldn't just whip up a bunch of uniforms for the C crew, there was no budget for that. He couldn't just have the C crew wear the "monster maroon" Fletcher costumes, the contrast would be too jarring (and showrunner Gene Roddenberry didn't like them anyway). So he decided to settle on a compromise to make the C uniforms appear transitional between the Enterprise-A and the Enterprise-D: Eliminate the inner turtleneck shirt and the belt. So that became what Jack Crusher wore in Family, with the old Starfleet emblem replaced by the commbadge.
The belt returned in Tapestry along with an inner T-shirt, to make the uniforms in Picard's youth appear to be yet another transitional period, which I think was a cool touch.

7:50 -- RE: Picard Post Borg; A: You're right. Just like a few moments ago, apparently Jean-Luc needed a proverbial push to start using his sense of humor as an investigative tool. After a while, I begin to think of all Star Trek as a kind of detective story.

I love this episode and after the events of "Best Of Both Worlds", it was nice to slow down a little and learn more about our Starfleet "family".....had to say it 😁.
Everybody does such a good job of acting but Patrick Stewart always delivers.... he's freakin' amazing.

The episode is called "Family" for a reason. we get to meet some key characters' families, the main one being Picard's, of course. It's much needed episode after the 3rd season's Finale and the 4th one beginning. I agree with every word you said about it, and I am glad you've enjoyed it, as much as I had. 😀

This is definitly one of those episodes that grows when you get older. As a youth i was nerding out about the technobabble and sci-fi stuff and thought of this episode like "meh". With more life experience, i.e. losing loved ones, getting through hard times etc., i really appreciate the melancholy and the positive note how it ended, and the thoughtfullnes of the writers making this. In retrospect, this is one of the strongest episodes of all of Star Trek. And of course, our lovely and smart Jen getting all of the notions goes without saying!

@@img00, usually is down to budget, sadly. The excellent TNG Poster Mag kept up good & listed him as Acting Ensign from the ep he was given the role & Crusher had Cmdr in brackets after her name! Great mag at the time as it kept right up to what was happening in TNG, despite poor BBC not showing it like our TV station was in the 90s.

When i was young ( and stupid) i always felt this episode was a letdown after BoBW II. Now since i'm old (and still stupid, lol), i tend to think this episode is just as impactful (if not even more).
The Borg are not just some overly powerful aliens, they are true horror. They don't just kill you, they forcefully take your personality, rip away your individuality, mutilate your body and destroy everything that makes you a person and then use you to do the same to others. I sincerely hope that something similar won't happen to us in the future (the Internet could be a first step towards it. (same as the saying of the Frog that gets slowly boiled without noticing it, until its too late)).
Btw, i love Worf as a character. Seeing him with his human parents was really sweet.

It would be damn hard to know the commands came through you to kill off most of the galaxy class in Starfleet and the thousands of people on them, not to mention the attempt to assimilate all of Earth. They could have just passed by this episode and put a few moments in future episodes but they hit the nail on the head doing this right after the Borg incident.

7:12 "You always reach for the _future_ and your _brother_ for the _past."_
"There should be room for both, in this life."
Indeed, I would argue that both are _necessary._
First, as the old saying goes, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Look at all the bloodiest chapters in history and recognize that we _must_ learn why they happened so they won't happen _again._
But, second, a good acquaintance with history brings one face to face with instance after instance of disasters we couldn't handle properly because we didn't have the proper _understanding_ of them; an understanding we have _now_ because of scientific _investigation._
And how many problems do we have _now_ because of problems we don't _understand?_
