Adam Savage Meets Original Kill Bill Bride Katana Prop!

- Adam gets to finally inspect one of the original Bride swords made for Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill--a stunt blade with scabbard that still has evidence of its use in the film's production. The details on the hand guard (saya) shows incredible detail Adam is able to recognize and call out from his own replica. In addition, he gets to examine one of the Aldo Raine stunt knifes from Inglourious Basterds, which gives him new insight that makes him want to remake his replica immediately!

It's always fun seeing Adam geek with Props Store, but the videos where he's interacting with props he's recreated on his own are truly special.
The recent video of the corridor crew touring Adam's place was really fun to watch
I love that Adam reset the sword and scabbard into the “peacetime” blade up position after handling both.
Not as Adam was looking at it,......Tsuka to the right is wartime, blade up is just the correct way to orient the blade, assuming the owner is still alive.

Adam, I doubt you'll read this comment, but I was so happy when you took the Katana and Saya off of the stand, and *inverted* them to put them on the stand *correctly*. The blade edge is kept upward, not rubbing the stand, and the scabbard mouth also flipped to be appropriately near the hilt.
I saw a blade IN A MUSEUM put down the wrong way! I weeped for the edge 😭

I like how Adam placed the katana down the proper way, sharp side up.
I know nothing about the topic but it seems like the logical and intuitive way of doing it as well. The idea of resting it on the business side doesn't make sense and the shape also naturally lends itself to "hanging" it off the rest in that manner. A lovely video overall :)
@@wilhelmscream6919 in addition to keeping the cutting edge safe, storing and carrying the sword with the 'edge towards the heavens' was also a cultural significance. I believe it has to do with honoring your ancestors, but don't remember exactly.
Even if he did put the handle on the support, rather than the blade as it should be... Wince worthy seeing it upside down, especially out of the sheath.
Just got to that bit now, well done Adam 👏 he knows his stuff alright ! Shure he was going to say Saya for the sheath but most wouldn't know what it was, and I've seen Tsuka handles that shape, my favourite style.

Not in El Paso, it ain't.
Adam is living the dream! Katana are surprisingly heavier than one would expect, especially since the spine is thick (a jacket of softer steel over the harder edge with differential hardening when tempering and quenching the blade). This results in a blade that tends to bend rather than outright snap.
Love the attention to detail on the tsuka (handle/grip) and saya/sheath! The waisted taper on the tsuka does lend it a certain elegance.
That they are even if pop culture always tries to imply otherwise. The point of balance is also relatively far away from the handle due to (usually) lack of distal taper so the sword is more focused on raw chopping power at the expense of reach and nimbleness.
As someone who LOVES the Kill Bill movies to DEATH, I’m honestly jealous……..

In his book The Kill Bill Diary, David Carradine tells many details about the movie's filming, including that some of the props in Bill's home were things he owned.

We are at Smithsonian air and space right now, and he took 150 photos yesterday alone - and that was just in the little time he had been shoots.

I love seeing everything in the background. If I'm not mistaken on one of the lower shelves is a piece from "The Rock". It's what holds the VX gas in the rocket. But I could be wrong.

I only own 1 prop. Years ago i visited the location where they filmed the mountain temple scenes in conan the barbarian. I managed to grab myself a few chunks of what was left of the set after it was burned down. In the movie, there are fire bowls on every step and i have some pieces of those. Maybe not the best movie prop but special to me.
I came just to see Adam get excited and geek out.
I was not disappointed. 😁
I love that Brendan has become much more comfortable not knowing everything about props. He presents himself much more and as a steward and learner of props. He is of course more knowledgeable than anything... Aside from Adam lol

the back ground shelf alone hast some amazing pieces in it.
The etching on the hilt of Aldo's knife, a star with an Indian Chief's head, is the crest of the US 2nd Infantry Division. Although Aldo has a different unit patch at the start of the film when he is assembling his team, it is possible he started the War with 2ID. It is a very fun detail and demonstrative of someone knowing their military history very well.

When Adam noticed the Star carved into the Basterds knife pommel end you can the see the indianhead in the center. That is from the patch of the US 2nd Infantry Division.
It would be so incredible to be able to see these props in person!

Awesome. I’ve always been so curious to know about the sword props in kill bill-so much attention was given to them unlike pretty much every other western movie featuring katanas. Shame it’s not the hero prop though

It is a "Rikko tsuka" on The Bride replica. It's my favorite style of tsuka for katana.

I see it as a victory for the original prop's makers of the movie when Adam says there is, some details on the prop that people has hard time to replicate the right way.
I know Adam is into his watches and I really like his Speedmaster, but that Seiko SKX is my favorite of him tbh.
Call me crazy but I went through the whole auction. Some great unique items, like the hero invitation envelope in Harry Potter, the B2TF2 hoverboard, and a Last Crusade grail diary!

In Kill Bill, in the upstairs of Hattori Hanzo's workshop, there are quite a few katana's on some racks are these also made for the film props as well or just non-prop created katana's that were purchased from somewhere and real?
They were sword replicas you could buy at a swap meet, with aluminum blades and cast parts. Only the guards were replaced with Hanzo style guards.

Adam, I was shocked to see that your amazing ruler tattoo was apparently being rejected and was flaking off! Then I realized I was looking at the wrong arm and was seeing the temporary tattoo haha

8:28 - Looks like there is some writing etched in underneath the brass ring too.
First thing I notice is the California yellow license plate with # GLD 204. '55 Chevy (Harrison Ford) from American Graffiti.
Of the pieces shown in the background, I hope Adam was able to get close ups with the Indiana Jones stuff. Raider's medallion, Temple of Doom monkey head and stone, Last Crusade grail and diary! What a great collection there.

I was thinking, the green insert for the sheath. If they used a digital replacement for a blade stabbing stunt, they might want have to show the blade through the holes.
There are some astounding items in this auction; I do wish some of them could wind up in museums rather than private collections.

I've searched all over online looking for the Yojimbo sword, or any of the Akira Kurosawa movie samurai swords. Can't find them.
