I'm glad you were able to find your way Tim. I have been in a dark spot for a long time, but you are giving me inspiration to find joy in life.
Edit: Thank you for the likes! I really appreciate it. This video deserves more views in my opinion.

Rear Projection sets certainly aren't covered a ton. Cool to see you cover one even if personally I don't care much for them. They are a cool piece of history when people wanted larger displays but making CRT's bigger wasn't really feasible due to weight. One of the few 40in CRTs was well over 300lbs or 136kg

I had a Sony Rear Projection CRT in 2002 that lasted all the way to 2014. They're a pain in the ass to fix if broken- and expensive to maintain too!
For all the headaches that chunky monkey provided, it was MAGICAL looking back at it now being able to hook up my N64 with Dolby Digital surround sound playing Majora's Mask on that behemoth! It felt the closest I got to playing in a theater like setting at that time. They're also excellent for light gun games too!

Back in 2015 I picked up a 55inch rear projection tv for FREE from some rich kids that were upgrading. It needed a new lamp ($25). It was plug & play. Multiple component inputs. And it had the best speakers I've ever heard in a tv, besides having a dedicated home theater sound system. I trolly-ed it home in the hatch of my 1998 Acura Integra. And it fit ! A great adventure that paid off.
Anyway, glad you're back. Missed your vids. Keep up the good work, GHG 😁

Thanks for this wonderful video Tim, I usually don't cry while watching a video about an old TV but I must say I've missed you and your videos a lot.
I know I don't know you personally and neither do you know me, but your way of making videos really leave a ℎ𝑦𝑔𝑔𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑔 feeling and has been a big inspiration in my journey of making videos but has also been a good boost for my interest in old but interesting tech from old DELLs, Consoles, CRTs to Pentium 4s, and that has helped me through difficult times.
Keep up your good work and enjoy your stay here in Sweden, god bless❤

I got a 42" Toshiba RPCRT about 8 or 9 years ago from a freecycle type paper (Friday Ad) here in the UK. I wanted to make use of my complete lightgun collection for my PS2 that was gathering dust. I have it setup in my shed purely for Guncon2 action! Although the lamps need aligning often, it brings me immeasurable joy to play. One unsung advantage of these giant TV's is the sound quality. Having such huge speakers built in is something we have obviously sacrificed with new TV's.

I think everyone has at least one memory associated with these absolute beasts of televisions. Some of my earliest memories involve watching my siblings and cousins play N64 games on a TV not too different from this one. Absolutely giant, absurd sound system, and most of all extremely cozy to watch. To me, these are some of the biggest artifacts of the 2000's.

The revitalisation of this channel and Tim being in a better place after so long is by far the most beautiful thing I've experienced this year. I've been here since he'd test a 5450 if it can run crysis 2.
We're surprisingly in similar boats regarding friendships. This year got marred for me by a nasty falling out with 2 people I considered really close who ended up really not being close at all, a very straining bond that ended in me being basically thrown out like I was worthless. All that happened early in the year, so since then it's been about this journey of filling the void, going back to old things and sometimes pursuing new things, going out to see new places and get myself out and meet new people.
After that experience I'm still honestly very cautious with opening up, it feels safer to manage myself without letting many people in, but it'll go eventually. I've met some good people. And through them my eyes have cleared. I know the destination will reach me as long as I'm going this way.
    - JT

Phenomenal. I think it's important to acknowledge that friendships can take many forms and it isn't always obvious what your friends or a specific friend gives signals as affection, but in time you will deeply know. I have friends from years ago I recently reconnected with and it's like we never stopped talking.

Just want to say, I don’t remember ever subscribing to this channel, but this video is incredible. I have a best friend I’ve known for 14 years at this point. We’ve taken many road trips like this, all across the country and this video brought back all those memories , sitting in a car mostly in the Midwest area, endless hours, laughing at the most ridiculous things. Driving multiple states away just to go see obscure bands because we thought it was funny. Thanks for this video.

Watching your videos feels like a therapy session sometimes, I can't really tell why.
I remember that my oldest brother had shared a flat with a mate and they both bought a projection CRT at the early 2000s, it was almost like a holiday when they asked if I'd like to come over to watch movies or play some OG Xbox games like Soul Calibur 4 or Fable.
When I had my first flat, I got a Sony Trinitron pretty cheap and bought an OG Xbox to go with it, to "re-live" those times. Then I shared my flat with an old classmate and boy, we had such a blast playing Timessplitters together. But as time goes on, the Trinitron died and my mate's way and mine parted.
Nowadays it's pretty hard to find a Trinitron in a good condition and I remember it was a pain in the ass to get rid of the broken old one due to the heavy weight.
Anyways thanks for not letting go of the TH-cam channel, even though I sometimes forgot that it exists due to the time between uploads, but that's okay and I guess one of the things that makes your channel special to me.

This is what I played my ps2 on growing up. We had a sony 4:3 rear projection tv and had the component cables connecting the playstation. Gave an excellent experience. The TV went for ages we sold it off to a relative after upgrading and it went for nearly a decade after that and still had decent brightness before the bulb eventually went out. I reckon it saw 15 years of daily use.

I was lucky to get a early HDMI era DLP from my dad years ago. Currently sitting in a friend's game room just waiting for me to find it, and myself, a proper new home.
Always glad to see you pop up in my feed Tim. Long term viewer, forever fan. I was a senior in high school when I found your channel, I'm 26 now. So many experiences and losses, so many stories to tell.
One of those stories I have is similar to yours. That same friend who is keeping my TV safe moved 2 & 1/2 hours away. I was so depressed that I couldn't just drive 10 minutes up the road to see him. That was until one day when he called me and asked "Hey, wanna go on a little adventure?". He had found an original Gamecube retail kiosk, 900 miles away, and his first though was not "can I get it?", it was "I know who will drop everything to go with me". That one phone call was what reminded me that no matter how far the distance, he will always be my best friend.

Man, thanks for sharing such a vulnerable part of yourself. I have not only experienced the devistation of navigating those conditional friendships, but I too have gone on the great journey of procuring a giant Trinitron back in the day almost entirely as a result of your work with your original HD CRT video! Watching yall in that parking lot with this beast brought back the same fond memories of almost panicking about fitting it in the car but the immense enjoyment of making it work...and then of course the first time you turn it on! Luckily, while my friend didn't understand at first, after he saw the raw enjoyment I got from owning such an incredible TV, he got the picture. Anyways, I've always enjoyed your content and I can't wait to see what you create this year!

One of my friends had a huge projection CRT like this one in their basement that was basically unused. One day we decided to play PS2 guitar hero and rockband on it and I think we played for like 10 hours straight lol. The particular model they had was quite dim and blurry, so it needed to be in a dark room to see anything. To this day I have a soft spot for these, even though a proper CRT is better in every regard. Awesome video, thank you

Greetings from Denmark. I hope you're enjoying this CRT inside with all the snow and cold were getting in the area. Cant imagine anything more hyggeligt. I can recommend Disney's The Black Cauldron, Im sure it would look amazing on this.
I keep a smaller B&O CRT TV for retro gaming, cost me nothing, doesnt take up much space, and the colors and actual bassy speakers are nice.
I owned an FW900 for a couple of years. Found it cheap, and it even had the original 1m3 cardboard packaging. Had a lot of good times with that display, and your video made me nostalgic. It now lives with a fellow quirky guy who appreciates this stuff.

Back in the day we always just called these "big screen TVs" and they were incredible. It's not like today where 55-inch sets are the norm, a standard living room TV was only like 32 inches, including the plastic. Some of the old ones were kind of crap with dim pictures that took ages to warm up, but there was nothing quite like playing Super Mario World or Sonic 2 on such a giant set. Heck, I even played 8-player LAN Mario Kart Double Dash on one of these back in the day, which is something that I'll likely never experience again.

I still own a Sony KP-51PX3 that my father bought in 2003 and even with all the flaws this technology has, and I'm well aware of them throughout the years of using my specific set, I still love to get in front of it from time to time and feel the "cozy" experience you described, that's why I still have mine. By the way, great adventure to get the TV and testament of friendship meaning. All good to you and enjoy your TV the best you can! 🎉

  • @WedgeStratos

It's nice to see you finding yourself after all these years. The old classics of dedicated music PCs and the HD CRT that led to this moment bring me back to a better time on TH-cam. I hope you continue to soldier on and enjoy the oddities of tech.
For myself, I lived with rear-projection for years, with many an hour of PS2 and Wii gaming, alongside the prime era of Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and all that jazz. Cozy is an appropriate word. That said, I don't envy you here. That weight alone is enough for me to avoid another rear-projection display, plus the eventual issues you'll have with color convergence will be nigh impossible to service. And there is still one thing you lose from a CRT: lightgun support. There won't be any sessions of Duck Hunt on that thing. But, in the era these displays were released, the Wii and its sensor bar tech is probably the most fitting approach. I hope you enjoy that beast.

As an American that owns a Chevy Tahoe, it’s a tad funny seeing y’all refer to a Volvo V70 as huge LOL! Regardless, great content as always Tim. Can’t wait for the full video on this beast.

So grateful for your triumphant return to TH-cam. My dad has had Volvo station waggons all my life. With my siblings and myself going to school, moving apartments, whatever it may be, they always can hold so much more than you would ever expect. lol

My grandfather owned a front projection TV where the mirror folded out of the cabinet. It was definitely super washed out by the time he got rid of it, but it was something very nostalgic for me.

I pushed this video because i expected it to make me think more than other videos, and it did make me tear, i have been feeling very lonely as i have nobody close to share things with, maybe some small things, but not everything, what i want to share is reflected in my channel and i can't share it with anybody, not even the jokes in english since everyone talks spanish here, its really sad that i barely have friends, i mean, idk what to call them, i haven't seen some for years but we still talk from time to time, so no, definitely not a friend like i have always wanted but indeed people i want to share with from time to time, similar deal with family except i see them all the time.
I don't have low self-esteem, but i do feel like i need to know more people and that i haven't found the right people yet, i want to play music but nobody does, i want to share videogames and i can with some but they aren't as passionate, i want to talk about old tech and nobody cares, no one cares as much really, and i feel like people need to care and find a passion, their creative sides, for free time to not just mean drinking alcohol, watching football or going to the beach, there's so much more to life than that.

I couldnt afford a tv with hdmi ports so all i had was my rear projection. To be able to connect my pc to it I had to use an hdmi to component converter and run it through a 25 foot long component cable. It was glorious in its blurriness. I later upgraded to a pi 4 with rca ports to connect it to my rear projection tv. Then i streamed my pc to the steam link program on my pi 4 via wifi . I played DOOM 2016 and it was laggy as hell but movies and tv shows streamed fine.
    It was a fun project.

I love the premise of this video. I found a cool tv lets go get it. Seeing a tv like that brings back a lot of memories. Also it was really neat to see my pc at the end. I'm glad to see your doing well Tim. Thanks GHG from a long time fan in Kentucky, USA.
