@@drumcorps0junkie Scott Johnson doesn't even arrange anymore. How could you not throw mike Macintosh in there? I think rennick and Macintosh are probably the top two.
To all those saying that these guys hide dirt with their tuning: Even with the most possible snare response, it will only affect the sustain of the drum by thousanths of a second. Anything that would otherwise be dirty, would still be dirty on these drums. Sorry to impose upon your verbal sabotage of an excellent program.
That used to be Phantom, now it's SCV haha I honestly love Rennick's writing. I marched SCV 2011, and i can't stop watching Phantom 2010, they're just so awesome because of Rennick.
@jarbear027 As a Phantom and UNT alumnus, I need to address these statements of Phantom's easy books, and how Dev's have harder books. I learned at UNT under Paul that there are many drummers that come in expecting to make drumlines, and they got mad chops! When given the "task" of playing 8-on a hand, they absolutely can't do it! So I pose the question, especially to the people that accuse Phantom of easy books - what defines difficulty - fast notes....or working with more open space?
But also, what matters is the musicality of the writing and of the performance. This book is written and performed beautifully. And it sure as hell isn’t easy. What else matters?
They look at both. That is why it is so hard to quantify a good drumline. I've heard from judges trying to decided, should they go with the line who is playing the HARDEST book (that fits; cadets play some crazy notes every year and it fits on field) that isn't 100% clean, or the line who is playing an easier more "musical" book that is playing it piss clean. Most lines are never 100% clean anyways, esp at this level.
@Mergician dude, yes. I agree for sure. I don't think it's so much "working with more space" as much as it is actually playing in time. When I drum my goal is to be so in time that I cancel out the Dr. Beat and I can't hear the click. So many individuals and groups take this concept for granted and don't really fully apply it. They would rather be clean "clean" than go for individual "in time-ness."
Very nice stuff here! They are VERY clean and have an AMAZING quality of sound from section to section. Probably from their uniform technique and approach to the drums. Just my 2 cents...
I was just saying as the other commenter that the judge doesn't look for the 'hardest book, most notes or who is the flashiest'. Judges don't care about that shit. They look for consistency, timing, how well the parts fit with the brass and player to player execution.
@Mergician And to add to that - as bass drummers, I've met more people who can play 4's than they can 2's, given the more room for error. At the same time, there are people who watch a bass line play some awesome 2's....and immediately cry easy book. Just some more food for thought. "This is the most insane audition I've ever been too" - - bass drummer at 05 PR auditions, who was cut from BD. He ended up aging out at BD in '06.
well said and some of those rolls arent exactly what you call slow or easy on top of that those snares are tuned so that the snares get the most response from the head freakin incredible sound so amazing
Wow, it’s insane listening to this, then listening to them in 2011. They sounded terrible to me in 2011 videos, and then I saw that Paul Rennick’s last year there was 2010.
Oh Sorry I marched during these years in DCI and it was for everyone else in DCI. Just around the formation of the G8 and the judging sheets getting changed more and more. I think have a solid grip on what it was about being a part of the organization.
Perhaps you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I know very well that Star won drums in '93. I think this line went above and beyond what Star did in '93.
I am a coats fan but i understand that corps win because of the aspects of their show and how everything fits together. i respect BD because they win for a reason not because they are overrated or over hyped. They win because they are good at what they do. this year phantom was better at drums than BD in finals and nothing is gonna change. Judges pick the corps that win because they have worked hard and they deserve to win, not because they like their music or how hard their percussion book is.
I think its funny how iv watched like all the videos of the different angles that this rep was shot with. And how you can see like all the videos being shot in this one
@jarbear027 You miss the whole point,my friend. When judges critique drumlines they listen and watch how well they fit with the brass and pit.Doesnt really matter how tough the book is at all. They dont judge the parking lot.Phantom was crystal clear, had perfect technique, sound quality, marching and attitude. And by the way, watch some Blue Devils from the 80s for innovation and kick ass drumlines. In 10 years people wont be talking about BD from a modern standpoint. They will still talk about the 80s.
why is everyone saying their book is easy, go check it out, the snare and tenor features are pretty difficult, may sound simple but they are not in the slightest bit
@LAKings0101 A lot of drumlines do that. Its not cheating or anything. But if you listen to some vids of the snareline from the side you can hear the top heads and it's still clean.
4:3 in 12/8 to a time signature and tempo change to 4/4 straight eighth notes. the 4:3 is equal to 16th notes at the new tempo so it sends you for a spin.
btw, I don't know if any of the troll-cats on here have tried to play this book, but it is difficult. try it a little before you say it's easier than any other groups' beats. i think your mind will be changed
say what you think Paul Rennick is by far the best percussion arranger on the planet
+Josh Hutchinson He's also an awesome teacher.
Josh Hutchinson He's 1 of the best, but mix him, Murray Gusseck, Fred(rest in peac)Sanford and Scott Johnson if you could my friend
🏆🎼😉
No matter where he is - his groups achieve insane blend and quality. Testament.
@@drumcorps0junkie Scott Johnson doesn't even arrange anymore. How could you not throw mike Macintosh in there? I think rennick and Macintosh are probably the top two.
not disagreeing whatsoever
How ironic that SCV walks past the drumline that replaced theirs the next season
lol yes, also thought it was funny how a couple guys on the SCV 2010 line ended up marching Vanguard Cadets open class in 2011
AznAfroMan513 how does that even happen
Soupie Nips guys from phantom all went to SCV and they were really good so vets didn't get there spots back
Paul rennick happened. He was this groups instructor, you do the math
@@soupienips6338 - Paul's members followed him and they know his technique
This is what I come back time and time again to remember what a drumline is supposed to sound like.
Or you can just watch scv right now. It's like the same shit
that's legit spot on tho rennick is/was caption head for scv right now and phantom then
Sucks for that snare who has to look straight "into the light."
hoh hoh hoh.
“What on earth bass drums that was hot”
Ok I'm crying
It was at this moment that Paul remnick saw scv in the back ground and made the decision to go write for them
I must admit, I've never been a Dynasty guy, but the 2010 PR drums sounded fantastic.
the iconic whistle.... could stop a train if it wanted to.

I would actually argue that their tuning showcases how clean they are, nice and loose top heads, bottom heads tight as hell, and the guts loose

those that understand just how hard this book is, know its the space that makes this book one of PR's best ever.
The tuning of the snares makes me wet
Paul Rennick. You sir, are a mad man. Jesus.... I am very excited to see what he does with the SCV Drumline in 2011
the snares are so clean. I cant handle this
I’ve never really liked Phantom, but this freaking rocks. Incredible line, incredible writing, and the tunings are sick.
That's one of the best transition player lines as a whole I've heard in at least 10 years. Very impressive hands across the line and very fun licks.
"You win'." ha! That good? Hell yes... folks are watching EIGHT years later...so, so crisp.
the West Point Hellcats just chillin in the front row, nicee
This has to be one of the greatest lines of all time.
I want to see a video of when Prosperie and Karricker were on the line back in the old days.
This is fun! Just a ram the entire time! Good stuff PR! Miss them good old days!
lol at 2010 being the "good old days." Damn it...I'm old.
@Richey13 3 snares are from UNT, 1 quad goes to UNT, and if I'm right, one of the basses was from UNT. Most of the pit was UNT though.
Is that Prosperie in the front?!
+BlueMist Yes with the other Hellcats.
That's whats up!
this is justification enough as to why they won drums. I bet that sounded sooo tasty in person...
Everytime I see somebody say Phantom has an easy book, I just laugh to myself.

the book may not be the hardest of that year but the kind of balance and clarity that they attain is more difficult than anyone elses book
