21 is the highest military honor. A 21 gun salute. This the significance.

21 gun salute when a soldier dies. My Daddy and my husband were honored that way along with the bugeler and the presenting of the flag.
This always makes me cry. Those families will never know the honor given them or what happened to them. It wonderful this was done. It just breaks my heart.

I’m sorry for your losses. My grandfather was a police officer his whole life. When he passed, my grandmother didn’t want a big fuss made. She got one wish, no bagpipes lol. They shut down a freeway for the procession, which I’m sure mortified her, but she never spoke of it. 😂

21 steps, and 21 seconds is representative of the 21 gun salute to fallen soldiers. The sentinels also will never wear any rank insignia. They do this because it is not known what rank any of the unknowns are so the sentinels never wear rank so that they will never outrank one of the unknowns.

Also, none of the guards wear rank insignia so as not to unintentionally outrank the unknown soldiers.
    Another fantastic reaction :)

I don't know how I can condense my response to this video. I'm a 30-year veteran of the United States Armed Forces. In my very first assignment I served as a funeral detail officer providing military honors to deceased veterans in the state where I was assigned. As the Officer-in-Charge it was my responsibility to present the flag folded from the coffin of a veteran to their next of kin. I've lived within walking distance of Arlington National Cemetery, I have family interned there, and I've visited it many, many times. I am a man of faith. I've literally touched the tomb of John the Baptist in the Umayyad Mosque and the tomb of Salahuddin in Damascus, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. I am a Christian, and in no way am I equating the sacrifice of our servicemen to that of my Savior, but only saying that in all of my experience, I've not experienced holier ground than that at Arlington National Cemetery, and frankly, I believe my Savior would agree. Anyone who enters those grounds and cannot feel the holiness of the place has no soul.

The number 21 is in honor of the 21 gun salute done at military funerals. Not only that the Sentinels do not wear their rank so that they will not outrank the buries unknowns regardless of what the unkown's rank was.

I am so glad you are coming to live in our beautiful country and I love your reactions. Thank you for the respect you have for the USA, our military, history, and our flag. I recommend the book 1776 by David McCullough. That is one of my favorites. I don't know of any books on the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier. You will love D.C.

Thanks to DNA the unknown soldier from Vietnam was identified in (I think)1989 and returned to his family. That tomb remains empty and has been inscribed with "Honoring and Keeping Faith with America's Missing Servicemen, 1958 - 1975".

England has a Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in the nave of Westminster Abbey in London. It's capped with a slab of black Belgian marble and is the only tombstone in the Abbey upon which no one is permitted to walk. The Unknown was interred on 11 November, 1920 and was flanked by 100 recipients of the Victoria Cross and 100 women who had lost their husbands and all their sons in WW I. Simultaneously, the French interred their Unknown in the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Since the inception of such memorials, Poland, France, Russia and multiple other nations have done so as well. But the British and the French were the first.

My Dad is a Vietnam vet who went on to serve 20 years in the USAF, and this past fall had a day trip to Washington, DC sponsored by the Honor Flight program. A plane full of vets from all wars back to WWII in all branches of service, were taken to visit the memorials to the wars they served in, and to Arlington/the Tomb of the Unknowns. It was a very powerful experience. 😭🇺🇸
One of my grandfathers was stateside during WWII and then was in Korea; one of my great-uncles also in Korea; one of my uncles was in Vietnam; and one of my moms cousins was killed in Korea. And then my in-laws and their older kids were on the receiving end of US military aid. Unfortunately didn’t go well but I’m grateful nonetheless.
And then I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the UK’s military for their service, as they’ve so often been side by side with the US military.
    Thank you all! ❤️🤍💙

The Unknown Soldier from Vietnam was identified in 1998 using DNA.I visited Arlington Cemetery in the 70s on a class field trip. The sentimentals don't wear rank so that they don't outrank the soldiers in the tomb.

There is no body in the crypt from the Vietnam War. There was an unknown originally buried there, but DNA evidence later identified the remains as those of First Lieutenant Michael Blassie of the US Air Force. He was disinterred in 1998 and buried with full honors in a military cemetary near his home. The stone was replaced with one enscribed "Honoring and Keeping Faith with America's Missing Servicemen." It no longer refers solely to Vietnam.

Hi Doug, I'm exactly the same as you, my focus is on the wars, as I feel that in times of hardship is where you learn the most about any nation. I've noticed that unfortunately there are many American youth who either don't know or don't care about your nation's history. You can be sure as hell that when I raise my kids as Americans, they'll know absolutely everything!!

When Sentinels are on guard duty they do not wear rank insignia. Since nothing, including rank, is known about the unknowns it's a matter of respect that a Sentinel should not be of higher rank.

It is in Virginia, but the entrance to the cemetery is within walking distance of the White House, the Lincoln memorial, and the Washington monument, among other places. Edit: crazy fact, no building in DC proper is allowed to be taller than the Washington monument, so for a city/metro of its size, it doesn’t really have a skyline.
