That is why Americans are so patriotic. Most Europeans mistake it for nationalism in the European sense, but it's not actually our country that we're so passionate about. It's the principles and ideals that our country was founded on that we revere, the idea that every human being on the planet has rights that aren't granted by the government, but you just naturally have. In fact, if your government does violate those rights, then the people have the right and duty to overthrow that government.
It's why our government officials and military swear an oath not to the country, the president or any other politician. They swear to uphold and protect the Constitution.

When I was in elementary school back in the 1970s every student in my class was required to sing or recite the Star Spangled Banner from memory. We also had to explain the meaning of each line of the song. As for how it was written we learned that Francis Scott Key went out to a British ship as a negotiator. When he was finished he could not get ashore as the tide was out. He could do nothing but watch as the other British ships attacked the unnamed American fort. The next morning when he saw the American flag still flying above the fort he was inspired to write a poem that was later put to music that we now recognize as the Star Spangled Banner. We did not learn about any conversations he had on board the ship or of him visiting the fort the following day. This next part is something I once read in an issue of Reminisce magazine about 25 to 30 years ago. I’m doing this from memory so please excuse me if I get something wrong. At the start of the 20th century the United States of America did not have an official national anthem. The Star Spangled Banner was only one of about four or five different songs that the American people were asked to vote for to be the official national anthem for the United States of America. For many of the adults the Star Spangled Banner was the last song on the list that they wanted to be the national anthem. The American people wanted the American government to stay out of the conflicts that were going on in Europe and Asia at the time and they viewed the Star Spangled Banner as a song that glorified war. As for the other songs on the list they could have chosen from the adults could not agree on which one song should be made the national anthem. As this was not an election to select a political candidate or some issues school children many of them attending one room schoolhouses throughout the country were allowed to vote. The majority of the school children voted for the Star Spangled Banner and as it received more votes than any of the other songs after it was ratified by the American government it official became the national anthem for the United States of America sometime in the 1930s.

I know what the colors stand for, but Dad told me every time he saw the red strips, he thought of every drop of American blood shed for our freedom. Athletes have the right to kneel, and protesters have the right to burn the flag. But they only have those rights because of the red stripes. And I have the right not to like it.

The flag is in The Smithsonian!!! What most do not know is that if Ft. Mc Henry had actually fallen, The States would have been split in two---much like what Gen. Sherman did to the South during the Civil War. It would have been extremely hard for us to survive. The War of 1812 basically ended in a tie. It did not become the National Anthem until the 1931. But, this incident is also why the USA does not bow our flag like others in ceremonies, etc. Sometimes we squabble about our country alot. But, we do have principles that are above all of that regardless of race, religion, politics, gender, or nationality. What is right is right for everybody around the world which is why so many look to the USA . And lastly, if you haven't done so, please react to "Arlington" by Trace Adkins for Memeorial Day.

There’s a country singer, Johnny Horton, a former History teacher from New Orleans. Who did several historical songs that teach some great facts. Listen to his “Sink the Bismarck” Horton has a nice size catalog even though he died young. It’s a fun way to learn history.
Correction: Horton was never a history teacher. His song Battle of New Orleans was written by a history teacher, which is probably where the misinformation started.

The National Anthem was used as an anthem for the country before it was officially adopted, but nothing like it is today. The states were united, not like it is today. To help you understand it, the story of General Robert E. Lee is a good example. Lee was an officer in the US Army, a graduate of West Point. Considered a genius military tactician. When the Civil War broke out, Lee was offered the command of the entire US army. His home state of Virginia was in the south, and he could not fight against his homeland, his state, his country of Virginia, so to speak. That was how most people felt in the 1800s. Every state had an army. You'll hear the army of Massachusetts, the army of New York, and so on. So, the Union had its limitations. We truly became one country because of the Civil War, and it grew stronger before WWI. WWI made us a superpower, one of several.

Slavery filled the earth through serfdom and trade, but the flag being lowered, meant the Americans on land, were surrendering and were returning back to slavery under king George. But they had a taste of freedom and were never going to be slaves to any monarch, ever again.
Though, the Star Spangled Banner is uniquely the American anthem, its truths are universal, meaning that it is humanity's anthem and why those who are drawn to the truth of freedom at all cost, bravely lay down their lives for it, so that others could immigrate here and above all other nations, finally have freedom. And think of how freedom traveled around the world, because America was free and helping others to be free. Americans have many times, in many battles, held other nation's flags high, so their lands too can be free, by the sacrifices of the brave. 🇺🇸

    The narrator is lying, though.
There were 2 flags at Fort McHenry during the 1814 naval attack.
Both made by Mary Pickersgill, one 30 X 42 feet, and the second 17 x 25 feet.
The smaller flag was meant to be flown in bad weather.
Francis was not there to free all the prisoners, just his client Dr. William Beanes.
He did secure the Dr.'s release, and they were allowed to return to their own ship, but were held by the British fleet until after the barrage.
The morning of the attack, September 13th, the smaller flag was flying in the stormy weather.
The Fort was fired on for 25 hours, but there was very little damage.
The fleet kept out of range of the Fort's cannons, and the rockets & mortars they used to reach the fort were very inaccurate.
There were not piles of dead bodies holding the flag at an odd angle.
There were only 4 casualties at the Fort total.
The large flag was hoisted in the pre-dawn hours of the 14th while still foggy, but the storm had passed.
This is when Key caught sight of it from the truce ship, and wrote a few lines on the back of an envelope, completing the poem a couple days later.
This video doesn't even get the lyrics right!
    "...what so proudly we HELD"??
    It's "hailed", not "held". 🙄
Stop believing everything you see on the internet.
When everything is a popularity contest, it promotes exaggeration & lies in a bid for that attention.
The merit of those early patriots don't need lies to bolster their honor.

This is what I replied to those who were angry at me:
This is part of a sermon from a Pastor. The story is true, however details are totally wrong:
      1. It was not during the revolution, it was in 1814 during the war of 1812.
      2. They were not the colonies, it was already the United States of America.
      3. It was not the entire British war fleet, it was approximately 20 ships.
      4. It was Fort McHenry, not Fort Henry
      5. Francis Scott Key was not negotiating the release of many prisoners but simply negotiating the release of 1 of his friends. (Source: Smithsonian museum)
      6. They did not remain on the British ship, but were escorted to and guarded on an American ship as to not reveal to Fort McHenry what was going to happen. (Source: Smithsonian Museum)
      7. Fort McHenry was defended by 1000 American soldiers under the command of Maj. George Armistead, so it was not a predominately civilian fort. Fort McHenry's purpose was to defend Baltimore from British attack. (American Battlefield Trust)
      8. The USA suffered 28 casualties in this battle (4 KIA and 24 wounded) - The British suffered 1 casualty (1 wounded). (American Battlefield trust).
      9. Historians also tend to disagree whether the flag was replaced during the bombardment to fly a smaller flag, therefore saving the original star spangled banner from destruction.
My Sources of this information are American, from the Smithsonian museum and the American Battlefield trust.
The story is an incredible story, it does not need to be lied about to make it a story of amazing patriotism and heroisms, and I myself find this story to be extremely inspiring and moving due to me love for the USA.
This version however, as I've stated above is a part of a pastor's sermon. It's not spoken by a Historian, therefore although moving, it isn't the accurate story, more likely an affectation of the truth. If you don't believe me, check out my sources:

Thanks for pointing out that FSK would not have referred to the States as colonies! The Star Spangled Banner has 4 verses. The first describes the anxiety and hope as they watched through the night to see if the flag still flies and the fort is still untaken. It ends with a question, "does that... banner yet wave... ?". The second verse describes how, with the breaking of dawn and the shining of the rising sun, with the bombardment over, the flag is revealed still waving over the fort and ends with the hope, "oh long may it wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave." (I love the imagery and the words of the second verse describing the flag being revealed. It's well worth looking up.) The third verse describes the defeat of the invading armies, who sought to deny us our "home and... country". "That band" are described as "hirelings and slaves", that is, mercenaries and subjects of a king, and that they have found here only "the terror of flight and the gloom of the grave." It ends by proclaiming that "the star spangled banner in triumph doth wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave." The fourth verse I'll quote in full: "Oh, thus be it ever, when free man shall stand between their loved home and the war's desolation. Blessed with victory and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, if our cause it is just, and this be our motto, in God is our trust. And the star spangled banner in triumph shall wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

It is good to point out the speaker is not lying about the story. This is from a recording probably 50 or more years ago. There are mistakes in the story and in the images presented but not lies. The speaker is retelling a story he had heard previously and did not have all the details correct. The speech appears to be in front of an audience of American men mostly who would have a similar understanding of the story. This speech is unusual as it refers to numbers such as 100 ships and the number of men killed to keep the flag flying. Usually the story will include such things as "all the British fleet" were sent, include something about the prisoner exchange, the barrage of canon fire throughout the night, and that those on the ship continued to ask about the condition or state of the flag.
A good chance that the speaker didn't know he was being recorded or he may have tried to find all the details. But a speech like this is more about lifting up peoples' spirits or to encourage patriotism. It is not a designed speech for accuracy. It is obvious the speaker was confusing this with the American Revolution which many people did in the past link the story, in error, to that war.
To put it simply, it is a historical speech that displays some ambiguity or uncertainty of the accuracy of stories as they pass from one generation to the next. The focus should not be on whether or not the speaker was lying. People did die that night. Does it really matter how many. The flag still stood that night. Does it really matter by what mystical means?

The British were not trying to get the United States back under British rule. It was the United States that declared war on Britain in 1812, not the other way round (President Madison bowed to pressure from expansionist 'hawks' in Congress, much against the advice of business leaders: Britain accounted for 80% of US international trade). In fact the British ignored the declaration and just carried on trading normally until the United States invaded Canada in July of that year, deliberately timed while Britain was heavily engaged fighting Napoleon in Europe. It was only in 1814, after the *fifth* attempted invasion of Canada in two years, that Britain made a concerted incursion into the US - and it was a punitive "get off the lawn", in order to negotiate a treaty from a position of strength, rather than a serious attempt to retake the erstwhile colonies. When the defense of Baltimore occurred, peace negotiations were already under way, after Washington had been burnt.

Then again perhaps we're looking at different aspects. In any case, it's probably pretty safe to say it's not thousands. So we're probably relatively safely close to the truth to assume under 30 or thereabouts. As for the number of ships there, what I've seen thus far from what I can find is 19 ships.

I don’t know about the war of 1812, but in the Revolutionary War, more men died on British prison ships than they did on the battlefield. When caught, they were given the opportunity to swear allegiance to Britain. They refused. They did it for that flag and what it stands for.
