Fantastic conversation! Reading these guys gives me a sense of a kind of alternative modernity or 20th Century that *could* have happened, but sadly never did.

Thanks for the great conversation gents, I’m very interested in the Russian silver age religious thought, so I really enjoyed this. Currently working on a theology Masters and would really like to lean more into this area. As of now I haven’t delved too much into the writings of these thinkers, although I was pretty blown away when I read Soloviev’s Lectures on Divine Humanity not too long ago. This discussion is definitely a good primer and reference for navigating through these thinkers so thanks!

thank you both for this! Its prompted me to start reading Solovyev, and I'm thrilled to discover his work. Have slowly started with Bride of the Lamb, and it leaves me equally thrilled.

Also a couple of comments: I first came across Pavel Florensky when reading The Gulag Archipelago, where Solzhenitsyn describes him as “perhaps one of the most remarkable men devoured by the Archipelago of all time” (Vol. 2 page 670). It wasn’t until maybe a couple of years later though that I began to actually look into Florensky more. Also, apparently Dostoyevsky was friends with V. Soloviev and even largely based the character of Alyosha Karamazov off of him. During Soloviev’s Lectures on Divine Humanity, Dostoyevsky was there in the crowd listening. You guys may be aware of all this already but what I find interesting is that these two guys (Solzhenitsyn and Dostoyevsky) are pretty mainstream right now in the culture (I think Jordan Peterson has a large role in that). People know who they are and want to read their books, but some of the Silver Age thinkers whom these authors thought so highly of and were influenced by are hardly known! Maybe Dostoyevsky/Solzhenitsyn could somehow be capable of acting as “gateway drugs” to this realm of thinkers. If only they could be uncovered more…we shall see. Anyways, thanks for the convo, I appreciate you both.

Russian speculative idealism. conglomeration of senseless concepts taken from air. Interesting, why it can matter..
