  • COVID-19 has triggered waves of attacks on Asians around the world. The UK reported a three-fold rise in hate crimes on its East and Southeast Asian community in the early months of the pandemic. Now, two years into the global health crisis, correspondent Wei Du returns to Britain to find out if people who look like her are still living in fear, and what it would take to stop Asian hate in Britain. In the process, she also discovers the long history of racist attitudes towards Asians in the UK, and how the community is finally determined to fight back.

Wei Du said she only recently saw Asian hate in Britain. But the fact is, Asian racism (and racism, in general) has always been in British society for generations. If Wei Du didn't witness it before, that's because it was lurking beneath the surface, waiting for a trigger. That trigger was COVID-19.
Another possible trigger is China's frightening rise as an economic world power.

This involved verbal abuse, idiots trying to pick fights and throwing stones and snowballs packed with jagged ice, being chased through streets at night by thugs yelling racist insults etc. Most of the perpetrators were white men, but I’ve also faced racist abuse from black people and South Asians. So have many of my Chinese and Japanese friends. East Asians have suffered violent racist abuse long before the pandemic.

Same here in Australia. For my experience as an Asian student, I’ve been facing racism too since the rise of Covid. I’m from Kyrgyzstan but people think I’m Chinese just because of my mongoloid look. People think Covid comes from Asian people in general. For my experience, I’ve never been attacked but instead I’ve been pushed and yelled at mostly about Covid and China’s problems in their country and sometimes they would bump my shoulder real hard with a strong force sometimes on a train and a street. Of course, I wasn’t a coward. I just didn’t want to have a problem with them and continued ignoring them. For my friends who are Vietnamese, Malaysian and Filipino, a couple weeks ago a group of teenagers threw a battle of water at their heads telling them to go back to their countries and complaining about China’s problems that have nothing to do with them. My friends didn’t want to waste their time fighting back and explaining to them so they left. I can’t believe ignorant people still exist in a first world country.

Let's see:- we've lost all our manufacturing because China offered labour and production costs that we just couldn't compete with.
They are ravaging the oceans of marine life vital to nearby poorer nations.
They allowed their citizens to travel abroad AFTER knowing Covid was beginning to spread. When our government called for an investigation into the origins, the CCP reacted like a child.
They have invaded Tibet and want to invade Taiwan.
They own real estate, ports, farms and critical infrastructure in Australia against the wishes of the locals. Granted, it's primarily the fault of our useless leaders.
But with all these dynamics occurring simultaneously, I just can't imagine why some of us are 'waysist'.
China tells us not to interfear in it's internal affairs..........as it has spies and students stealing technology from under our noses.

I've been in the UK throughout the pandemic. Whenever I am outdoors now, there is still fear of encountering racism and being unable to respond to any such macro/microaggressions. I also feel as if I am being made more aware of how different I am for being of Asian descent. That being said, I have met a lot of lovely, diverse people here in the UK - racism exists everywhere, including in my home country... we need to encourage people to speak up about racist encounters, validate their feelings & give them support (but also be careful not to pin every issue on racism) - thanks for this video!

It was the privilege of being far more wealthier than the rest of the world and the certainty of being in total control including the ability to project violence in any global region, which made Westerners of European descent relatively tolerant towards marginalized groups for a couple of decades. It's still a very early stage of this development, but as soon as the decline really kicks in, racism in the West will be skyrocketing.

I moved to the UK last year and had already experienced racism. I was in the park with my daughters, as I was sitting down and group of teenagers walked passed me and one of the boy said to me “ching ching ching”. I was shocked and didn’t know how to react. His friend told him to stop while laughing.
Last week I was walking to a restaurant in high street with my family. We walked pass a pub, there were many people drinking outside of the pub, they look like pupils from the university nearby, a group of smoking / drinking pupils saw us and started talking about “racist” and laughed. I didn’t hear what exactly they were talking about but it made me feel really sad.
That night after the dinner I felt unsafe going to get our car through walking high street.
In this modern world, the children should be more educated about races.
The lady who claimed to be nationalist is upset about different races settling in the UK. What would she think if a white family settled in an Asian country and was unwelcome by the locals? To be honest, white people are very welcomed in my own country, why can’t she be the same?

To be honest, this doesn't strike me as surprising at all. I've always felt that there's a large amount of racism towards Chinese/Japanese/Korean i.e. East Asian people in the UK. If you were to have lived in the UK in the past 10 years, pretty much anywhere outside of London (where you'd have the option of never seeing a non-Asian person), you'd definitely have experienced some form of racism. Interestingly, I don't see it come from the older generation since most of them are far too polite to open their mouths and say something idiotic like that but the younger generation of Brits I feel to be disrespectful, angry and basically disenfranchised. I don't know if its all pervasive or only in the areas where I happened to be, which, admitedly, were mostly working class to maybe middle class places.
(Do note that when I refer to Chinese I just use that as a blanket word to include Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Singaporean and other related but distinct cultures. This is not a comment on race or whatever, it's just easier than having to type out Korean/Japanese/Chinese. I would use the word 'Asian' but 'Asian' in the UK refers mostly to our South Asian brothers of mostly Indian descent. Note 2: I'm using the word "English" because my experience is in England. )
If you were to ask me to speculate on why this is the case, I'd wager that this is because of a few reasons. Chiefly being what is mentioned by one of the ladies here in this video in that whereas other minorities have reached a critical threshold where English have to pay attention to them just due to their numbers, the Chinese have not reached that level yet, population wise. Secondly, culturally, there is the Chinese belief of the iron rice bowl which is to say that they'll tolerate all sorts of abuse and all sorts of attacks so long as it doesn't affect the bottom line of their survival i.e. their livelihood. Lastly, there is a cultural divide. Like the Jews in Europe, the Chinese tend to stick to themselves and keep their heads down low so that they "won't be seen as making trouble." It's related to the second reason that I mentioned but also has the effect of them becoming very successful in businesses etc. That and the fact that there is a huge emphasis on education in Chinese culture also helps ensure their success. The point is that Chinese people do not have a voice and do not have the political power nor push to ensure real change.
Lastly, due to the above reasons, there still is not very much contact between the Chinese populace and the English populace. You'd be surprised by how many Brits don't know simple things such as when Chinese New Year is or even what Diwali is about. The latter being extremely shocking considering that Leicester has the biggest Diwali celebration outside of India and that maybe 8% of the population is South Asian. When there is little contact between the communities and between the people, there is a lot of mistrust which can turn into something more dangerous over the years.
I would have hoped that in the decade that I've left the country, things would have gotten better but it really seems like they're instead regressing. Hopefully it doesn't regress further and give into far right nationalism because that's the first step down a very very slippery slope.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! To be honest, I thought the same reasons caused the Asian Hate before, which are disconnected communication and culture between local British, American, Australian, or other countries’ people, and the Chinese community. However, I am inclined to the other points recently since I came to the United States. I believe that education urges this hatred since the fake news about China has spread everywhere. Unlimited talk has been represented by the world’s leaders. Before I came to the United States, I thought this part of the world's civilization level must be higher than China, but now, I can tell they are even. In addition, if I consider the population of the proportion, China can be way fewer wild tongues (it might be because of the media control, free speech control, culture, or other reasons I'd discuss it later)!
Most foreigners in China also live in a tight community of the same nationality people or similar cultural background groups. Due to the difficulties of learning Chinese, they also rarely have real, local friends, so the communication and understanding between foreigners and locals are not really good in China. Besides, speaking of hatred and threats, Chinese people haven't completely recovered from trauma from 1840, 1900, 1931, and even 1998...... According to scientific research on Jewish people, the nation’s trauma can last for at least two generations. Why didn't the same situation happen to other countries' people in China? (of course, nobody wants it to happen, and I'd pray that no stimulus generates the disgusting phenomenon to occur anywhere in the world!)
Also, it's about the scarce resources, interest groups, manipulations, and profits! Overseas Chinese ethnic issues are always related to China’s domestic factors. Nowadays, I somehow feel that a voice is whispering: "China is not supposed to be a wealthy country since only the massive population and land can provide the cheapest labor and resources, and when China maintain a relevant not too poor and certainly not rich level, the nation cannot only to provide what the world interest groups want but also can purchase what the world interest groups wish to sell. Also, if like this, the scarce resources won't be divided up by the world's biggest population." However, if you change the stance to the Chinese people's feelings, you would hear them ask, why is it should be encouraged? Why should one ethnicity be beneficial more as the same creature of human beings than others? Is human being really superior than other creatures? The rooted reasons will always dive into humanity! If it's convincing for a nation to have resonance with the whispering, human nature's evil dominates human destiny! 💔
Moreover, why are there fewer wild tongues or voices of proportion in China or overseas Chinese communities? I would consider another reason. Chinese characters of “Politics” in ancient Chinese culture was not even the exact meaning of today's English word of “Politics.” In the period of the Republic of China, the English word "politics" transmitted into China through Japan from the western world, and it could not be accurately fit in existing Chinese characters. Hence, the leader Sun Yat-sen thought the Chinese word "政治” could serve it as the meaning of "politics" better, even though 政治 doesn't address the scarce resource and power; the inevitable conflicts between the interest groups, and so on. Chinese started to use it since then, and the game focusing on scarce resources and power began to play worldwide. This can indicate that the participants of the political conflict are outnumbered in the western world than the Chinese. Due to the lack of English ability and technology in China, the difference in ruling approaches, and the low level of civilians' participation passion in politics, the voice proportion from Chinese ethnic won't change soon.
Most importantly, why this ethnic is so distinct? We have to mention history to see what the nation experienced before. They are still in the recovering period. People's willingness to avoid conflicts is too strong since the world's most significant cyber citizens know that the more wild voices, the more severe conflicts. However, if the pressures on the massive Chinese population escalate dramatically, the catastrophe of humanity crisis happens at an unprecedented level. Therefore, I think political conflicts leading to morality falling is the root. It is the threshold for emphasizing morality awareness in political games that alert human beings’ sustainable prosperity.
As a Chinese Muslim, I pray for Ukrainian civilians and all the world's people. Civilians should all stick together and love each other, and we should call upon to refuse to be dices of political games.

@Sora L it's on many mainstream news reports. You can look up Google with 'Vancouver hate crimes capital' term.

White people are not attacking Asian people in the United States so stop implying it's white people by "Anglo". Also, the reason you do not hear about these reports from other countries is because they accept hatred and don't report them. If you think it doesn't exist everywhere you are sadly misinformed.

The foundation of this problem lies in the same place as many of the world problems. The lack of a good foundation in philosophy, psychology and debate in education.
It is honestly impressive how well politicians, CEO's and religious leaders have thought us that we should leave such things up to them. Their tactics are no longer working that well due to the internet, many of the younger generation are finding their way to these subjects online.
I just fear it won't be enough, we have many difficult, global, issues we all need to deal with. Otherwise this planet might not stomach us for much longer.
Actually discussing emotions such as hate, anger and fear and giving our children tools to better deal with them through a basis in psychology would make a huge difference. Especially if you combine that with discussions on morals and ethics in a format that uses the many skills found in debate.
We humans have the people, the researched, the knowledge, experience and technology. What we now need more than anything else is the wisdom to use it responsibly. I think we can all agree leaving this just to the politicians, CEO's and religious leaders isn't working out that well.

Interesting and sad that people can be so ignorant.
Chinese immigrants to UK generally keep a low profile and are themselves very hard working, law abiding and non confrontational.Let's hope these racist actions stop.

Why doesn't Mr.Vu speak English,he's lived in the UK for 30 years. Anyone who takes up residence in another country should learn the language. Everyone. By not doing so it isolates that person. I lived in France for a while tho I didn't speak French when I arrived, I spoke it well enough to communicate by the time I left & that was only a couple years.
