Gaudete! (SSAA) arranged by Michael Engelhardt, Millikin University Women's Choir 2008

  • This arrangement was created for the celebration of the 50th annual Vespers at Millikin: From Generation to Generation. The theme of the event had an obvious influence on the concept -- to set an ancient Christmas carol (from Piae Cantiones, 1582) in a very progressive style. The tune of the carol remains completely intact, with only slight rhythmic variations from the original. It is the harmonic, percussive, and optional electronic elements that regenerate this simple medieval tune into a post-modern quasi-industrial groove-anthem.
    Published by Walton Music. This arrangement is available for purchase though most music retailers including JW Pepper and Hal Leonard.
    Live recording from 2008 Vespers at Millikin University, featuring Millikin University Women's Choir. Michael Engelhardt, conductor.

    this song SLAPS. IT'S SO GOOD. we are singing it in the tour choir I am a part of. i am living for the percussion element along with somewhat medieval/gaelic harmonies. it's really a stunning piece.

    My choir did this 2019, I sang low alto but got the soprano solo, still my biggest flex making the jumps between parts (for anyone singing this now or soon, i hope you all enjoy it as much as I did)

    Incredible. I just heard our local high school choir perform this and had to look it up. I'm so glad it's here, and it's an extra treat to be able to follow the score!

    I was lucky enough to sing that solo when my choir did this. It's a tough piece but definitely a lot of fun.

    My choir sang this last year for one of our concerts(I was in my junior year of high shool) and my teacher had me placed on alto 1, I nornally sing alto 2, so I was glad I could hit the higher notes. On the pkus side, my choir teacher is starting a women's choir(her words) and shes giving me the tennor alto!! ^^ I get to singblow notes and its giving me gender >:3

    Only advice is not to swoop from note to note at the beginning

    • @midzyryeong
      @midzyryeong 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's well within the style of the piece to "swoop" from note to note. It's being done on purpose.

    • @samrambles958
      @samrambles958 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It says "Freely, like a gaelic chant". This whole song is not supposed to sound "proper" in the choral sense. I think this performance captured what was wanted perfectly, tbh

  • @annialeiva5793
    @annialeiva5793 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have heard several version of the original. This one, in particular, I have heard it several times by a choir in my city. I must say that it is interesting how this version tries to blend the sounds of the industrial era with the original version, but it continues producing irritation emotionally. Instead of contemplating the harmony that original version has, produces the opposite up to the point that I heard just a noise. Please, don't destroy what had already value. Is it not enough the noises we all hear every day by cars, trucks, and all type of objects? Why are you trying to destroy the happiness that music can bring to everyone's life with more noises?

    • @bobbymcgee8990
      @bobbymcgee8990 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Sorry, but just because you didn't enjoy this arrangement, that doesn't mean this is nothing but "broken noise" and "something beautiful being destroyed". I for one really love the sound of this arrangement and still think of it as something beautiful the way it is here, as do many others. People can have different opinions.

    • @kellyjones4735
      @kellyjones4735 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Excuse you, this arrangement is gorgeous. Too bad it offends your delicate sensibilities, but why be so dramatic? It "destroys the happiness that music brings"? lol piss off with that.

  • @FREEASTHESTARS
    @FREEASTHESTARS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The old 15th Century Version is much better than this; they didn't need to modernize it/jazz it up. It just ruins it.

    • @kellyjones4735
      @kellyjones4735 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      No it doesn't, that's just your opinion. If you don't like this version, go listen to the old one.
