Just saw your reaction to Change of Seasons. The DVD Metropolis pt2 has a live performance of that is fuckin awsome. They throw some Simpson's theme song in it and some other great shit. Also in the COS album they have some great covers of Pink floyd, zeppelin, and deep purple. Check it out
I would really enjoy this. although it would be difficult to figure out what format to do. this album needs to be listened through without breaks since the songs generally blend into eachother. it would be weird to do a separate video for each track. perhaps doing videos with 2 or 3 tracks each? one thing is for sure, you cant break the album up only listening to a bit every day, the impact would be lost. it would be list watching one scene from a movie every day.
@@Xsteelx94 yea this is the way to listen to the album for sure. but most reaction channels dont like to post hour+ videos, especially if its uncommon for the channel. the algorithm typically punishes videos that break the channels typical format.
But you've gotta do Metropolis Part I first! Metropolis is probably Dream Theater's most well-loved concert song. It's a freaking difficult song to play, but the members have (mostly) been playing it so often for almost 30 years that they can play it like the back of their hand, it's honestly impressive. And it leads into Scenes From a Memory!
Haken, Haken, Haken! Seriously, I would love to see your reaction to a Haken track - 1985, Atlas Stone, Falling Back to Earth, The Architect, Cockroach King, Invasion, Visions (title track) - there are so many good ones to start with!
Images and Words was their first commercially successful release so they were a bit beholden to the record company. Keep going through the full album. You will like a lot.
I think some of the songs from the middle of the album might be too laid back for him. He should just jump straight to Learning to Live. Waiting for Sleep is one of my faves but Drew might literally fall asleep.
Good call on the heavy riff having a Metallica vibe, definitely. My first Dream Theater song, Pull Me Under still makes my rotation all these years later!
This is literally their only hit song song .. first song off the first album with their current singer James Labrie .. I’ve been a fan since this came out in 1992. I’d recommend you stay on this one before moving on to other discs .. Take The Time, Metropolis Part 1, Under a Glass Moon and Learning to Live are all recommended .. thanks for another great DT review .. the lead guitarist lists Rush, Metallica, Iron Maiden and the Dixie Dregs, to name a few, as some of his influences so you will hear elements of them in their music. That is the way the song ends.
DT has many different influences. They've done covers of Kansas, Zebra, Journey, Elton John, etc. They've even covered entire albums- Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden), Master of Puppets Metallica), Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd), and Made in Japan(Deep purple)
Every metal band is inspired by Metallica, whether they know it or not. But yes, Dream Theater are big fans. They actually covered the whole Master of Puppets album at a live show.
Absolutely. DTs Master of Puppets tribute is an awesome testament to the span of Metallicas influence across the hard rock/metal front. Id like to see Drew react to some of Metallica's s&m 2 album. In particular, a Metallica song he perhaps is already familiar with and discuss the epic new makeover the song now has from the orchestrated additions.
disagree, a whole lot. Just because they use the same notes, doesnt mean they are inspired by metallica (although DT is, because portnoy for some reason is a fan of the drummer whos really not a drummer ulrich)
I've listened to every song on every dream theater albums multiple times. Here are my Top 5 you should react to: 1. Finally Free (from scenes of memory) 2. Best of Times 3. Illumination Theory 4. Count of Tuscany 5. The Great Debate.
Dude, you should take a look at Tesseract. There's plenty of good songs in this same style. "Beneath my Skin" + "Smile"; "Orbital" + "Juno"; "Phoenix", "Seven Names"
This is the song ,their biggest hit. This was the song/video on MTV and on the radio in the early 90's and how most us way way back longtime DT fans discovered them.I remember watching the MTV video for this song early morning before going to school around 1993-94
This era of Dream Theater is more connected to "A Change Of Seasons" than most of the band's work you've reacted to. Actually, they'd originally intended for a slightly different version of that song to be included on this album.
one of my favourite instrumentals form them is "stream of conscienceness", with another being "dance of eternity" since you said its the instrumentals that really do it for you
The abrupt ending to the song is the last episode of The Sopranos before the last ep of The Sopranos. Also that song ending as it does confuses people more now than it did back when it was just cassettes and CDs because we *knew* it ended; now you have multiple people saying "is that it? did the song end early? the video only had part of the song" and whatnot. Which is sort of hilarious to me, as someone who owned a copy of this in 92 and has been a DT fan ever since (their latest album is fucking stellar as well)
YOOO, sick reaction bro! I can ASSURE you that you would like HAKEN, Cockroach King in particular is a really good start since it gives you a very thourough feel of their many different styles :)
They did intend for this song to be more accessible, this was the single for this album and got a decent amount of radio play. So yer right, they held back a bit on this, but it makes for a good introduction track for the band
I know it's inevitably going to be buried, but there is definitely more Porcupine Tree/Wilson that's reaction-worthy. The Start of Something Beautiful, The Blind House, Way Out of Here by Porcupine. Index, No Twilight Within the Courts of the Sun, Home Invasion/Regret #9 by Wilson. Pain by Blackfield. 😁
I often hoped they would do a series of split screen 'in studio' covers of their old songs with their modern recording setup. BTBAM does this often and it's great.
The guys in Dream Theater were fans of Metallica growing up, so your observation about the similarities between guitar riffs are on point. Also worth mentioning, the earliest material you've reacted to prior to this was A Change of Seasons, written at the same time as this song. Speaking of Spotify, Dream Theater has every song or album there.
DT is my religion, you are awesome bro, I love your sincerity, you should have The Smiths as a reaction, a band that is so unique that you forget all the other bands...Morrissey is such a frontman.
If you're looking for more songs off of their original album I would heavily recommend Take The Time, Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper, and Learning to Live. The instrumental sections in all three are phenomenal and Metropolis Pt. 1 is the prequel to their album Metropolis Pt, 2: Scenes From a Memory, which is one of my personal favorites.
I wonder which tracks you didn't manage to find on Spotify by them, as far as I know they have everything on there! They have some unreleased songs that were cut from albums, they exist only as live versions, which are also on Spotify. Anyway, you're right about it being a more basic or held back song, this is probably their biggest commercial song so they kept it kinda safe I guess. You should try some stuff from the Awake album, it's still early DT, but that album is so good. Heavy riffs (first time Petrucci used a 7 string guitar on their songs), really good melodic parts and James LaBrie, the singer, kills it completely.
This is the track that was the single And got a lot of attention on the band. It is more commercial so to speak. But keep at it with this album you have more complex or epic songs to check out.
I’m not into this band much. But I think you’d really enjoy Prosthetic by Haken. Perhaps a few listens from The Pineapple Thief. They’re in that prog field of music
Do teh whole Images And Words album. It's a masterpiece. You could also react to "Metropolis Pt. 1: The miracle and the sleeper" or "Learning to live". Cheers. 🤘🏽
Hi! I'm personally a big fan of DT. Just love it when great musicians make complex music that actually is very listenable, you know... when it still souds like a song and a great composition. Being Swedish myself, I'd like to recommend you reacting to a Swedish band of comparable musical proficiency to DT. They sound completely different though, playing fusiony, jazzy, progressive pop songs. You should begin by reacting to their first cover-songs like Adele's "Rolling in the Deep", Brittney Spears' "Circus", Justin Bieber's "Baby" or Alphaville's "Forever Young".
