- MPGomatic.com puts a 2011 Dodge HEMI Charger R/T AWD to a grueling week-long test drive. [ Full Review: www.mpgomatic.c... ]
The 2011 Dodge Charger R/T is equipped with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine producing 370 horsepower (HP) and 395 foot pounds of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.
Forget about the notion of V8s as gas hogs. This HEMI uses Fuel Saver Technology to drop into four-cylinder mode under light-throttle conditions.
MPGomatic produces car reviews videos with a unique focus on gas mileage, in-cabin technology, and driveability. Yep, we're the folks that shoot those 0-60 MPH tests.

@cowmilky Thanks for the kind words of support!
Dan delivers yet again. Excellent review. In 3 minutes and 25 seconds I got what type of fuel economy can be achieved with it, how it looks in and out, its performance, all of the features, and rear seat and trunk space. Well done.
I am surprised by the 31 mpg it got on the highway. AWD V8 - wow!!!!
You guys have such a great and unbiased review method! I wont miss an episode!
Now this American Master piece will compete with any foreign car
No because its gonna blow its tranny and the electrics will freak before the race starts
It's pretty fast considering how heavy it is.
I can't wait to get this in the future!
the Hemi V8's with fuel saver mode really do get good MPG for what they are. Had a 2007 Charger R/T AWD and could easily get 27 mpg on the highway and about 17-18 city. Now we have a 2010 Jeep GC 5.7 and that gets about 16 city/24 highway. All in all i think the 5.7 Hemi is a great engine...tons of power and awesome sound without a big sacrifice in fuel
@BlazerLT I hear ya, BUT ... there are significant differences between your 300c and the new Charger, including low rolling resistance tires and vastly improved Cd. These factors make a real difference at highway speeds, not to mention that cylinder deactivation works quite well. Check the full review on the MPGomatic website for more details.
Took a trip from SC to Ohio last week and got 27.2 mpg on the way up and 26.4 on the way back. I am happy with my RT
Great review Dan! Does the new model show on the display when it's in 4-cylinder mode?
Holy cow! Great MPG. This is why I tracked down your review...my AWD R/T is arriving soon and now I have a mileage target to shoot for. Can I beat mpgomatic!?
@BlazerLT Dan drives the speed limit.... most of the time. There are other factors as well, such as gearing, ecu mapping, drag coefficient. The speed limit in New Jersey is 65, you will get good fuel economy doing that instead of 75.
great review Dan !
Usually the only issue I have with your reviews is that the are not numerous enough.
But I feel that the fact that this car was an all wheel drive model should have been mentioned in the title and when discussing fuel economy numbers. All wheel drive is a major factor in fuel economy and the price of the vehicle.
Hey Dan, can you guys get the folks at Kia to get you an AWD turbo Sportage SX? After 4 months, I notice huge differences in fuel economy. Drive with a feather foot on the highway, and I can get over 30 mpg. Drive it a little sporty, and it drops to the low 20s, and drive it with authority and it dips well into the teens. The 2009 Forester XT I had before this was usually 19 mpg regardless of highway or city driving. :| I think the absolute best I got was 21.6 mpg with it.
@Morris1962 I added 'AWD' to the title shortly after I posted the video. Always check the written reviews on the MPGomatic website ... they go into more depth. The Charger's AWD system is efficient. It only drives the front wheels when needed.
@flatblackstrat I do 65mph too. And get about 23-25mpg tops in the summer. 32mpg is not a real number in a HEMI. It's good on fuel, but it isn't that good. Gearing hasn't changed that much. The 8 Speed should bring the number up, but with the 5spd Auto onboard, there is no way it it gets 32mpg now. Especially being an AWD.
@BlazerLT No offense taken, brother! :) I'm convinced it's the aerodynamic improvements and low-rolling resistance tires ... it's undeniably more slippery at speed. Agreed, there's no winning in town, it's a heavy beast. Allpar lists the '05 300C's drag coefficient as .33. The 2011 Charger R/T is 0.297 and the AWD is .2-inches lower than the RWD version.
When I was a kid, I'd stick my arm out the car window to feel the difference between holding my palm vertical & horizontal... mom would yell!
Hills can suck up the gas, no doubt about it. I try to limit acceleration up hills, when possible ... gain as much speed as practical on the way down, lose a bit on the way up ... of course you don't want to do this with traffic ... :)
What's your average cruising speed/speed limit? Our highway limit is 65, so I aim for 68 while in cruise and 60-72 with no cruise.
Remember, the HEMI V8 uses a fuel cylander shutoff on highway speeds. Unfortunately, it's not a super fuel efficient vehicle in the city.
@skykicker1600 Don't expect to see anywhere near that high in the city (as the Charger's rated at 15 MPG). It's the underrated highway mileage that pulls the combined average up. In the city, a vehicle's weight is one of the biggest fuel efficiency factors. On the highway, aerodynamics and rolling resistance are more important. Take a look at the Charger review on the MPGomatic website ...
A 6.4 hemi, AWD, 6 Speed, supercharged charger would kick the gtr's ass all day.
Well no shit genius. That's like saying GT350 kicks a GT's ass. I just realized modern Z28's and SS' are not really different under the hood, which is wild to me. I'd hardly say it "kicks its ass" either. Give me a 2011-2014 loaded RWD Hemi and I'm happy and so should anyone else. A SRT8 is just going the extra mile if you're balling like that to spend that much more on the tweak. If you planned on professionally competing with it at a track or something than of course going all the way would probably be a good idea. They're great cars, that are like the only beefed up jack of all trades that exist. Luxury, Sport, Sedan, Muscle etc. Dodge does the engine tiers the best out of the American selection. Too bad they ruined the car with that god awful, uneven, ugly ass front end I'd never buy. Whoever thinks it looks better has terrible taste or works for their PR department or design team behind the change.
We always try to provide full details on our highway testing in the written review on the MPGomatic web site. Check the link in the description. The state speed limit here is 65, so we run one loop at 68 MPH with cruise control on and one loop with cruise control off, with variable speeds from 60-72 MPH.
@willoverkill I'm not sure about the 2012 R/T, but the 2012 V6 has an "Eco" indicator ...
@GTGTRR Yes, my Hemi has MDS. Best I have done at 60mph is 25-27mpg tops. 50mph is not highway driving.
didnt know they came in allwheel drive with the hemi, nifty!!!
@BlazerLT Looks like you got one, since Chrysler 300C burnes more gas even mpgomatic tests. Just like you are it seems that Dan never managed the same gas consumption numbers of the charger with a 300C.
Great review looks like a good dodge for once with good mpg
Great reviews, would do better with a newer HD camera.
@willyhuber Agreed. If you can return this kind of mileage on a light foot with the 5-speed, who knows what the 8 speed can do? :)
Gotta do this same video when the 6.4 and 8 speed auto come out.... think it'd be quite interesting to say the least.
If you guys are looking for fuel economy, go ahead and get your selves a magnaflow exhaust system, and an intake. It'll go up pretty good, and I don't think it'll raise your insurance, depending on the state in which you live.
+Nick Heard NONSENSE. If the magnaflow improved MPG then Dodge would have it already installed (to help them meet government MPG minimums of 35 and eventually 54)
.
+electrictroy2010 that's ok. you go ahead and don't do any mods....we will all do them and get the benefits. every intake I've bought has added at least 1mpg with the most being 4.5mpgs.
So here's my question, how fast (or slow) do you need to be on the highway to get the MPG that these guys posted?...65mph?
@mpgomatic Not to be disrespectful, but my car has the same engine, same MDS cylinder deactivation and same 5 speed tranny and there is not a hope in hell in reaching 32mpg unless you are travelling well below the standard 60-75mph highway travelling speed. In stop and go city you will only be getting 14-16mpg at best and on the highway, I have been able to squeeze out 25.5mpg with synthetic oil.
Simply a must have.
@mpgomatic That'd be cool. No rush though..take your time!
I can assume the RWD only charger RT gets a little bit better gas mileage?
wow those numbers are pretty good for a big V8... my 10 year old Toyota Camry 4 cyl gets around the same mileage... haha I guess it's time to get the V8 Charger. might as well have more fun, while getting the same gas mileage..
@osirtulane Go for it! :) Practice driving with your foot off the pedals whenever possible. Use inertia & keep a wide following distance.
@bkm1231 I think it is only on this car because it doesn't have the optional rims that are larger.
32MPG on the highway with the 5speed. Unless you are driving at 55mph and no higher, there is no way you would reach those economy numbers. I own a 300c with the same engine and it doesn't even come close.
How is the gas on the Charger RT comepared to the STX? Im stuck between the two.
I wish dodge could figure out how to get the hemi to stay in 4 cylinder mode when the car is in park. That would save alot of fuel.
Looking to purchase one in the year of 2014 either a 2011 charger or 2012. :)
Dang. Was hoping for the Challenger. Its all good..
If you do, post a video of it :)
Would love to see it.
@BlazerLT does it have the fuel saver tech?
@JoeBird76 We'll get to it ... I want to do an epic Challenger road trip ...
Best I can do is 28.2. And that's with a bit of a draft. I think we must have more hills around here than you do...
@mpgomatic Hi Dan. About the difference between Chrysler 300C and the Charger, I saw that you already have a review for 300C anyway, No one wants to admit that they got the bad apple, I mean if they pass the neighbor's grass which is always greener anyways.
I love this car very much
@skykicker1600 I'm not explaining anything until you turn off your CAP LOCK. :)
Can someone tell me what improvement were made from the 2011 to the 2012 RT? Or where to find it
Will do for sure. :)
Good job
With a little tuning of the engine it could easily push 400
@willyhuber its out already!
this car is as awesome as a possum
@austinman1995 Probably tuned for efficiency.
@1JOHNBEAVERS At 65-70mph? Not a chance. I can post a video where my car is showing an average of 40mpg.
I rented one I could not bust 18 mpg. I could not keep my foot out of it.
this is americas secret hop up car to go against the nissan skyline and mitsubishi's evo. awd v8 sportscar.
@Fussinated Who has a bad apple?
Dodge lost me at 4,400lbs.
Forget about the notion that V8's are gas hogs, this engine uses fuel saver technology. 15-25mpg.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
i'm crazy about charger rt...no commmmment
test drive an 300 or charger 8-speed!!!
I'd rather get a Chrysler 300C beacuse basically a Chrysler 300C is similar to the Charger, but its more luxurious.
@Xboxlivemgear yea i know..thats what i meant.
I had to rewind to make sure I heard 4,400lbs...
German sedan wanabe lol
